Chapter 24 - Zhāng 24

"By the way, do you know which house still sells new, ready-made bathtubs?

If you know, help me buy one tomorrow," Paige asked Waiter Erin, remembering that the house still lacked a bathtub.

"I know, I know! All the tables, chairs, and benches in our hotel were bought from the same woodworking shop.

They usually have stock. I'll go check tomorrow and make sure to bring one back for you."

Since the God of Wealth gave the order, even if they didn't have one, he'd search the entire city to buy one.

"This is the room. Please rest well. I'll go now." Waiter Erin respectfully left after opening a room door.

Paige had spiritual power, so even without turning on the light, she could find the bed accurately.

She took off her shoes and coat, lay down on the bed, and quickly fell asleep.

The next day, Paige was woken up by noisy sounds.

The street was no longer as deserted as before. It seemed like everyone had come out of their homes.

Paige listened carefully and realized they were all talking about army recruitment.

Some were also talking about where to escape.

Now that the city was surrounded by PN troops, and the soldiers inside wouldn't open the gates, their escape options were very limited.

They could hide in the mountains, but there were wild animals. They might die from those even before the city was attacked.

Some were crying, some shouting, and some were trying to team up to get the guards to open the city gates.

Many young and strong men grouped up to join the army.

Experienced hunters could go straight to the battlefield. Those with no experience had to learn how to shoot first.

As long as they learned to shoot, they could go fight.

As for accuracy, there would be plenty of chances to practice later.

Although these were all new soldiers, the old ones could finally take a break.

They fell asleep right away, not wasting a second. After they rested, they had to go relieve another group of tired soldiers.

Paige noticed that Winn and the other two were also discussing whether they should join the army.

Protecting the country was every man's dream. Now that they were so close to achieving it, it was hard not to feel tempted.

But they were also hesitating.

After all, the two of them were the main support of their family. If something happened to them, what would Paige and Ely do?

They temporarily forgot the fact that Paige was stronger than them.

So in the end, they decided not to go.

Their physical strength had improved, and they could handle normal fights.

But bullets didn't choose targets based on health. One bullet could end everything, no matter how strong they were.

After hearing enough, Paige got ready to get up.

If they really wanted to see the front lines, she wouldn't stop them.

She wasn't the old-fashioned type of woman who cared about whether the men in her family went out to face danger.

Men with dreams and the courage to chase them were more attractive.

What she could do was give them the strongest support. When they were tired from chasing dreams, they would always have a home to return to.

Knock knock knock. After getting ready, Paige knocked on their room door.

"Who is it?" Winn asked.

"It's me," Paige replied.

Very soon, the door opened.

"Why are you back at this time? Did you travel overnight? Have you eaten? Do you need to rest first?" Uziel asked a string of questions when he saw Paige.

"I didn't travel overnight. I arrived last night. I saw you were all asleep, so I didn't come to disturb you."

"I just woke up. Did you all have breakfast?" Paige asked.

The three of them looked at each other. Everything here was so expensive, so they tried to save money. They hadn't planned to eat breakfast at all.

"Let's go eat breakfast first. After we're full, I have something to talk to you about," Paige said and took the three downstairs.

The three followed behind Paige like kids who had done something wrong.

After eating and drinking their fill, the four of them went back to the room. Paige asked, "Did you hear about the army recruitment? Do you have any thoughts about it?"

"No special thoughts. Taking care of you all is more important. Ely can't be left alone either," Winn replied.

"If you want to go, you can take Ely with you. The three of you together, I'll find you a safe place.

It's not important how many enemies you fight. What matters is that you protect yourselves," Paige said.

"Paige, can you really decide this? Can I really go too?" Ely looked at her in disbelief.

"As long as you want to go, I can arrange it. I have some connections with the commanders. They'll give me this favor."

She didn't have connections before, but after today, she did.

She gave them so many weapons and food. If they couldn't even grant this small request, then they shouldn't expect to get more supplies from her.

"Paige, then I want to go," Ely said, face flushing with excitement.

Guns. What boy doesn't like them? Even if he was only twelve, he liked them too.

"Then we want to go too. We promise to protect Ely," Winn and Uziel said.

"Not only do you need to protect Ely, but you also need to protect yourselves.

These are combat suits. Wear them. They can block a lot of damage," Paige handed them the prepared suits.

It was cold anyway, so no one would notice if they wore them underneath.

These combat suits could resist scratches from zombies and high-level mutated beasts. Right now, they were probably bulletproof too.

"Paige, where did you get this?" Ely curiously touched the suit. It felt nice.

"A gift from a god. Just wear it and stop talking so much," Paige said.

Ely couldn't argue back. He couldn't outtalk her or beat her.

After they got dressed, Paige took them to the military camp.

At the entrance, many people were lined up to register for the army. Some wore tattered clothes.

Some were there to defend the country, others just wanted food and clothes.

Paige wasn't going to line up. She went to a squad leader and said, "Go report to your highest commander. Just tell them the girl from yesterday is here."

"Who are you? You think our commander will see you just because you say so?

If you want to join the army, get in line. We don't take women or children," the squad leader replied.

"Delaying military matters isn't something you can afford. Just report it. It'll only take a few minutes.

If I were lying, why would I lie about this? What's in it for me? I'm not here to get free food.

Even if you don't go to the top commander, the second or third highest is fine.

Low-ranked ones won't know me. Make sure to pick someone high up," Paige said.

"You wait here. I'll report it. What's your name?" The squad leader wasn't sure anymore. Paige sounded confident.

He was just a squad leader anyway.

"Your leaders don't know my name. Just say the woman from yesterday. They'll know.

Make sure you find the ones who always attend meetings together," Paige said, pulling a chair over and sitting down.

The squad leader told a soldier to watch Paige and the three kids, then quickly ran off to report.
