Chapter 26: Unwelcomed Return
Claire didn't answer immediately. Her pulse was quickening, but she kept her face composed. She knew Evelyn had it out for her from day one. Maybe it was jealousy, maybe something else, but Claire had never gotten so much as a warm glance from Damian's secretary.
"I handled my task list before I left," Claire said calmly. "And I let the administrative desk know. If there's a problem, I'm happy to speak with Mr. Blackwood directly."
Evelyn's expression shifted ever so slightly. A glint of disdain flickered in her eyes.
"Oh, I'm sure you'd love to speak with Mr. Blackwood," she said, stepping closer. "After all, that's how you got here in the first place, isn't it? Throwing your last name around. Playing the victim. Let me guess—he fell for the sad story?"
Claire froze. Her nails dug into the leather of her bag.
"What did you just say?" she asked quietly.
