Chapter 34: Suspicious visit
Evelyn stepped inside, her eyes scanning the apartment with practiced ease. It was as if she didn't have to try to look suspicious. She just did.
"I was just passing through," Evelyn said, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "I wanted to check in. How are you?"
Claire narrowed her eyes. She didn't buy it. Evelyn had never cared about her well-being before.
"I'm fine," Claire replied curtly, her posture stiffening as she stepped back from the door, allowing Evelyn to enter. "What do you want?"
Evelyn shrugged nonchalantly, but Claire could see the tension in her posture, the way her gaze flicked to the bookshelves and then quickly away. "Just making sure you're not getting into any trouble. With everything going on, you're the last person I'd want to see get caught up in things that don't concern you."
Claire fought the urge to roll her eyes. "I'm fine, Evelyn. But if you're here to lecture me, I'll save you the trouble."
