Liam carried Ava to the car, opened the door with one hand, and gently placed her in the passenger seat.
Her face was pale, streaked with tears—she looked completely shattered. It was as if she'd lost her entire world. In some ways, she had.
He leaned in to buckle her seatbelt, then pulled her into a tight embrace. His deep, steady voice murmured beside her ear:
"Be strong. I'm taking you to the hospital now."
But Ava couldn't hear anything.
Only one thought echoed in her mind: Grandma is gone.
She no longer had any grandparents.
Liam sped all the way. When they reached the hospital, he jumped out and opened her door. She tried to get up, but her legs suddenly gave out.
Without hesitation, he lifted her into his arms again and rushed toward the inpatient wing.
Inside the hospital room, Susan was covering her face with both hands, sobbing uncontrollably.
The figure on the hospital bed was completely covered by a white sheet, not even the face exposed.
