Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Door

"WAIT-" I exclaimed desperately.

I watched as the overweight man put his finger on the trigger.

I quickly raised my right hand and knocked the gun away, just enough for the bullet to graze my left shoulder.

I grabbed my shoulder in pain. The pain wasn't that bad yet because of the adrenaline hit, I knew this pain would definitely get a lot worse, but for now I could endure it.

Acting on instinct, I raised my left arm while holding the pocketknife and cut his left arm severely.

The man, with a pained expression, aimed the gun at me again.

I quickly noticed what he was about to do, so I quickly hit the gun away, it hurt way more than I thought it would.

I used the knife to deeply cut his hand with the gun, splattering it with his blood, he fell down screaming in pain.

I quickly dragged him outside and took his gun.

While he was still trying to fight back, I went inside his apartment and locked the door.

I laid down against the door while the man was outside screaming in despair, banging on the door to no avail.

However, I'm not stupid. I knew what must be done, the guy shot a fucking gun. That obviously attracted monsters, zombies.

They would be here any moment, looking for prey. If there was no one, they would start looking for the source of the sound.

So for my own survival, I decided to leave him to die.

He kept banging on the door, begging to be let inside, I heard the realization and panic in his voice seep in the more as he shouted for me to let him in.

I heard the zombies that had gone down to the 3rd floor racing up to find the source of the sound.

However, deep inside, I knew these were just excuses, reasons why I was justified in my actions.

"I'm a murderer" I murmured to myself while holding my hand to my face, hiding my pained expression.

At the same time, the zombies reached the 7th floor and started viciously attacking the fat man. While I couldn't see what was happening, the sound of his screams were more than enough to let me know what was happening.

A few moments later the outside of the room went eerily quiet.

Throb

How could I have forgotten? I was still injured from when the fat man shot me.

My blood was leaking out uncontrollably, although the sheer amount was a lot less than when I had cut my hand.

As I was gritting my teeth and holding my injured shoulder, I remembered that zombies could smell humans, so I quickly backed away from the door, hoping it wasn't already too late. HOPING, that the fat man's blood was going to be enough to cover my own scent.

CRACK

To my horror, they knew I was here and they weren't wasting any time in catching their prey.

I immediately grabbed the gun and threw it to the bedroom because the fat man's blood was still smeared there, I wasn't hoping to make them go away, this was only to confuse them more after I did what my mind was telling me was the only way to get out of this situation alive.

I ran to the balcony and looked down. As of now, I'm 7 stories high, my feet started trembling from fear. I knew what I had to do, I couldn't let them infect me.

I hesitated as I climbed over the edge, my mind racing with all sorts of possibilities of what could happen next.

CRICK CRICK CRACK

I realized the door was about to break, so I jumped.

The zombies entered the room and they went to the gun, just as I predicted they would. They looked around and left, exactly as I had wanted, but there I was, on the 7th floor in the room next to the one I was just in.

After I had jumped, I quickly grabbed on to the balcony of the next room.

While it wasn't a particularly far jump, it was extremely painful due to my injuries. To prevent the zombies from finding me, I bit my tongue to stop me from screaming. Had my left shoulder not been shot and my left arm cut, this would have been nothing too difficult, but with all my injuries, it was excruciating. The thought of death or becoming one of those god-forsaken zombies helped me push through the immense pain.

After climbing over the railing and opening the balcony door, I made my way inside, grunting and gasping due to the pain while I waited for the zombies to leave.

As the zombies approached the room I was in, I quietly went outside to the balcony, so they couldn't smell me.

As the zombies passed my room and went down the stairs, I breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Thankfully, they hadn't even bothered checking the room I was in because God knows why.

However, this wasn't the time to be questioning that, I had to treat my shoulder wound, I had lost too much blood today, and if I were to lose more... nothing good would happen.

I waited for a few more moments to be sure the zombies had left, then I quietly opened the door and went to where I had been fighting the fat man, I grabbed my pocketknife, which had saved me, and headed up to the 8th floor. If I knocked on the door of someone who lived on the 7th floor, and they happened to see what happened between me and their neighbour, then there was a good chance they would respond the same way their neighbour did, I wouldn't be able to escape death like that again.

After going to the 8th floor, I was startled when I noticed that one of the doors had huge scratch marks. I knew I had to go before whatever that was came back, so I knocked on the a door next to it and this time, a petite blond lady responded. In a quiet voice she asked me: "are you one of those monsters?"

"No, no I'm not... not yet at least" I respond confidently.

"A-Alright, w-what do you need from me?" she responded nervously.

"It would really help if you could give me some first aid, and some water."

After a moment of thinking, she told me "S-sorry, I can't help you with the first aid, but I can give you a bottle of water , give me a moment, I'll be right with you"

I started thinking to myself: "What now..? My apartment was wrecked, I was injured, and no one wanted to help me" I sighed while contemplating what I should do now.

"Here.." The lady came out and gave me a bottle "Sorry, this is all I can afford to give, I have a daughter to protect, you understand, right?"

I took the bottle and thanked her, I noticed a little girl maybe about 5-7 years old inside the apartment. She was trembling while peeking around a corner.

"Hey, one last thing, could you tell me what happened to that door?" I asked her while pointing to the scratched door.

"You're better off not knowing" she told me with a cold and unwavering look in her eyes.

"Well, my apartment is trashed from the monsters ravaging it, is there a room somewhere that you know is unoccupied?" I asked her with low expectations.

After a moment of hesitating, she told me: "well, technically, that room is unoccupied" she pointed to the room with the scratched door "but, I don't recommend living there, while I don't know the full details, I can tell you for sure that multiple zombies were fighting there while also killing every person living there.. there are many dead bodies in there, and what happened to the zombies after? I don't know, but at least we're safe, for now that is... I hope"

"Understood" I simply answered. Having no real choice, I went to unlock the door, and as I entered, I immediately thought "holy fucking shit"

The smell was horrid, I quickly covered my nose, after walking around for a bit, I saw a total of 3 dead bodies, their body parts were scattered thorough the apartment, one of the bodies was completely torn apart, all that remained of the body was the torso, the rest of the body had become mush. I took each of the bodies to the balcony and threw them out of the window. While yes, it was true that I was now going to be living in the room where 3 people were brutally murdered, I knew that this was just the world we lived in now.

After that, I searched for first aid kits, and to my surprise, found 4 of them! I immediately took one of the kits and started bandaging up.

After I was done patching up my wounds, I decided that now was a good time to strategize and think of what to do next.

I remembered that I had seen a map while looking through the apartment and searched for it, after a moment I found the map and started looking at the nearby area and started looking for the nearest convenience store.

"If there are survivors, then there's a good chance that I'm not the only one that's planning on going to the store to stock up on food and water before things get worse" I thought to myself.

Whilst I was looking for the safest route to the store, something caught my interest.

"A police barracks, huh?" I said out loud "Well, if there's one place in the city that I had to bet on that hadn't been overrun by zombies just yet, my bet would there" I thought to myself while thinking about whether to go to the store or police barracks

"Even if the police really weren't overrun by the zombies just yet, I doubt they would take in some guy like me with them... I'll go to the store." I said to myself while still considering going to the barracks to look for a gun with a silencer.

After inspecting the map for a while and considering my options, I took a marker and began to highlight what route I would be taking.

SCRATCH

"Wait what?" My heart sank.
