Chapter 17 - Staying human

The soldiers were stupefied, yet Dae gave them no time to think and demanded again, a slight shaking hidden in his voice: 'Who got bitten? Please, god damn, just answer!' There were 10 soldiers alive and out of these 10 soldiers each one rose his arm and replied: 'I got bitten!' For a beat, Dae's body felt weak, especially his legs. It was his sheer will that kept Dae standing on his legs. He tilted his head back and stared into the sky. A long sight escaped his mouth, followed by a tired exhale. HE closed his eyes while shaking his head. The soldiers were still trying to figure out what was going on and once again Dae didn't give them the time for. The next moment he had risen his gun, pointing it at his own people, his friends and some of them he once considered a brother. Rayshel and the others stayed quiet. (Rayshel: Damn! I wonder what if I turn one day?) 'I am sorry!', Dae mumbled. 'I won't let you turn into monsters!' Peng…

In the city in England

Dean and the others had chosen the dark smelly alley. The alley was about to end so Sark who was at the front rose one arm as he came to a stop. He breathed in and out and resumed his walk, only much slower. The nerves were tense, of everyone. They reached the end of the alley and damn two ghouls were having a feast there, not a beautiful one though. Each ghoul had bitten an arm of a pregnant woman and were having a strength contest. This resulted in the woman being pull in two directions by her arms. She was crying, hope had long lost her. Yet, when she spotted Sark, she yelled: 'Please! At least my baby! At least my baby. Her eyes started bleeding and her skin was gradually torn. She must have been in hellish pain and yet once again she repeated: 'At least my baby!' Sark didn't look back to Dean and simply uttered: 'I won't force anyone. This world is merciless. People will tur faster on you than the light turns from green to red. But, I will remain human. He put down the black bag and took out another shot gun. Then he ran to the woman's aid. The woman's face brightened. Damn, she was being torn apart, but she smiled. The ghouls spotted Sark. One ghoul lurched at him while the other ghoul yanked off the arm of the woman. She was bleeding, bad, but she quietly dropped to the ground. Sark had so much rage in him and for his luck he knew where to direct it. The ghoul jumped him. Sark threw himself forward and slid along the ground. Just when he was beneath the ghouls he shot with both gun and blasted the ghoul's head away. He immediately heaved to his legs, on his way to prepare, but he wouldn't make it for the other ghoul had already rushed at him. He felt an arm on his shoulder and the next moment, Dean leaped over his shoulder and gifted the ghoul shots. Not enough to kill but enough stop that monster. He shoved Sark aside and thus made place for Larah who emptied her magazine on the ghoul. The ghoul dropped dead. They hurried over to the mother. She had died with a smile and her eyes had stopped bleeding. 'Seems like if you die before the infection turns you, you remain human!', Sark uttered and Dean had something to add: 'That or it can be that the infection itself can kill you or both. Well I would rather have that then turn into whatever they are!' Larah joined them, the bag in her hand. She set it down beside Sark who didn't waste any time. He removed a knife and cut open the mother's stomach. These the baby was crying. Yes, it was alive. For a moment the baby opened his eyes and they were red. 'Fuck!', Sark cursed. Dean shook his head. Only Larah got between the men and carried the child, telling them: 'Her eyes are not bleeding and her skin is white. She is not one of them! And what did you say some minutes ago Sark? You will stay human? So tell me, would a human abandon a baby only because his eyes are red?' 'Mmh, yes Larah!', Sark replied. 'That's what a human would do!' Larah puffed up her cheeks. 'Well, we are not normal humans, so we act differently. Dean rose to his legs and reached out to Sark who grabbed his arm. Both men gazed at the wide grinning Larah and again at each other. Then Larah added: 'We were on the way to the Behills Hospital. The doctors there can take a look at her. But first of all, we should name her!' Sark prodded Dean's arm and let him know: 'Well, you are dating her so give a name!' 'What do you mean I am dating her? Since when? Larah, tell'–Larah was blushing but she had not denied Sark's statement. With a slightly red face, wide open eyes she awaited Dean's reaction. Scratching his head he sighed and lastly decided on a name: 'Hope! Let's call her Hope!'

Meanwhile

The room was in flames and frozen. For his next attack, Nade threw and ice lance at Kale. To really do harm that ice lance was rather too small and was easily taken care of by Kale. Well, the lance did it job by catching Kale's attention. The next second Nade was holding Kale's arm where the bracelet was and he froze it. As he froze it something happened to Kale. He turned to thin black mist and lastly vanished. 'What did you do Nade!', Sarah asked from behind. 'He said he was here even before the red moon. That can't be because long ago the gate to the human world was closed. Yes, through some tricks and with much luck a demon or an angel can make his way here but normally he does not remain long on earth because the gate is closed. The only way he could have lived so long on earth are by possessing a vessel which he didn't because you saw his eyes–he was a demon. Or by wearing an Artifact. That bracelet around his am was one. There are several Artifacts and their abilities varies. But importantly now, what about the timer?' He turned to Sarah who had opened the box. 'Well', she began,' the good thing is it can be stopped. The bad thing, not from here. He planned everything through. If we want to stop the nuclear weapons from launching we have to go to the White House. There must be another box we can then use to stop it!' 'Fine! How long do we have?' 'One week!' 'That's plenty enou'–Nade dropped to his knees. 'Damn!' 'Nade, what is now?' 'Well, of course an Immune One can use the ability of a demon, but the more the demon, well let's say hates the human, the harder he makes the human to use his power. In other words using the power comes with some side effects, does not always have to be the case but for me it is. That's why for the next hours don't expect me to fight ghouls again like I just fought that demon!'
