Chapter 3 - Buying Time

In the past, all humans on the planet were once divided by various countries, different religions, and cultures.

But that was all until the start of World War III.

The century-long conflict raged on the planet, almost destroying it as they knew it.

As though nature had enough, it responded in kind with various pandemics and natural disasters, almost driving humans to the brink of extinction.

Things didn't get better until a decade later when thousands of meteorites broke into Earth's solar system, and according to their trajectory, they all had one destination... EARTH.

This imminent threat finally served as a wake-up call to humanity. They stopped their conflicts and united as one, trying to find a solution to the impending disaster.

A few months before the collision, they finally emerged with solutions, building thick and very deep underground bunkers with adamantine, the world's strongest metal.

After finishing their construction, they migrated to these bunkers, which were built in twelve locations: four in the Pacific Ocean, three in the North Atlantic, and the rest on land.

Eventually, the collision happened. As the impact of various asteroids at once deformed the planet, of the seven continents three were wiped off the map.

Even after the event, no human dared surface due to the intense radiation poisoning on the surface, courtesy of the meteorites.

Eons later, the first man braved the surface. This was the birth of the first Irregular and his seed.

It turned out that the meteorites had brought a strange substance into Earth's atmosphere, this substance could awaken people soul's, and materialize their seeds.

Creating irregulars...

Irregulars were special humans with various supernatural and metaphysical abilities, and their seeds born from their soul essence were the source of these Powers.

This first human Irregular, dubbed the Unifier, not only ushered in a new age for humans but also unified the planet under one name.

The Gaian Alliance.

Humans, after migrating from the bunkers, started building their cities on the foundations of the bunkers.

So yes, now there are three cities in the sea, three floating on the sea, one in the sky, and the rest on land…

These twelve cities were later dubbed the Twelve Federations. Each spanning millions of kilometers, they were each as big as countries of the past.

As humans lived their peaceful lives, seeing substantial increases in their technology, the count of Irregulars kept increasing.

Those who couldn't become Irregulars but still wanted powers introduced Cybernoxses to society, through the aid of the same special substance that awakened irregulars.

There were threats of various mutated beasts- animals affected by countless years of radiation poisoning and also affected by the same special substance.

They were fierce creatures, that attack human cities in tides.

But humans still dominated, and stayed at the top of the food chain.

Well, that was until today...

The invasion of the Lunarians...

For the first time, humans saw an S-class Irregular lose, and miserably at that.

Seeing the way the Lunarian called the Eternal Replicator easily overwhelmed one of humanity's greatest warriors imprinted an innate fear in their hearts.

How could they defeat that? They all wondered.

But unlike others, Seth wasn't worried about humanity's fate.

He was just broken by the identity of the warrior.

"Mom," Seth called out, eyes red.

'Th... this can't be,' his mind was in disarray. 'She told me she was the strongest.' Tears dripped from his eyes as he felt his whole world collapsing. His mother was all he had. She was his everything. Taking her away from him was like taking away his lifeblood.

He stood there, his eyes glued to the holographic screen in the sky. His eyes gained a little bit of hope when he saw her arms moving, grabbing the fingers of the Lunarian, which was clamped around her neck.

"Hmm? You're still alive?" the Lunarian's unpleasant voice rang out as its arms tightened further around her neck.

Increasing her struggle, "Pathetic!" the Lunarian voiced in contempt.

Just then, over the hemisphere of Earth, tiny stars could be seen looming closer.

When they got closer, the people gasped at what they saw…

The stars in question were gigantic Lunarian ships.

And with their pattern of movement, their destination was clear...

The Twelfth Federation, ELYON...

It was obvious they were about to lay their first siege on the planet.

Panic spread throughout the Federation as people feared for their lives.

But unlike others, Seth stood still, fixated on the sorry figure of his mother as she struggled within the Lunarian's grasp.

Suddenly, his eyes shone with a fierce light of conviction. 'I KNEW IT! She would never lose with me watching,' he exclaimed excitedly within his mind.

Within the battlefield.

It was unknown where she got the strength from. Maya's body released a bright shockwave, blowing away the Lunarian and its countless bodies, as they were flung backward in the distance.

The one holding her neck was instantly disintegrated.

Her body shone with an eerie blackish-white light as her voice reverberated around the Earth. "LET ME SHOW YOU WHY I'M CALLED THE ECLIPSE."

Suddenly, the world shook as an eclipse was forced into being...

The bright crimson sun was suddenly obstructed by the moon.

Elyon Enforcers Headquarters…

"Atta girl," Admiral Kendrick reacted happily.

But unlike him, the rest had scowls on their faces.

Finally reading the room, Kendrick noticed something was wrong. "Why the long faces? When she has made a comeback," he questioned.

"That ability only lasts for a minute," General Carl responded grimly. Pausing for a bit, he added, "How many of that monster's bodies do you think she can get rid of in that time frame?"

Finally understanding, Kendrick's expression morphed into a scowl.

Once more, silence pervaded the room as the commotion outside was audible. The troops were preparing for war.

Back on the battlefield…

"I can feel your soul burning. How long do you think you can last?" the Lunarian's multiple bodies spoke in unison.

"I can't defeat you, but I can stall," Maya responded.

Her hands spread apart, radiating a chilling light. Then suddenly, the whole planet shook, as though responding to her movement.

She pointed her hands at the Lunarian, and he vanished before he could react. Not even resting, she turned her gaze towards the Lunarian ships that were incoming. Pointing at them, they also vanished. After this feat, her entire figure cracked. The backlash wasn't a joke, as not only was her body fractured, but her soul was too.

But regardless, she didn't mind. Her voice traveled around the world as she announced, "I'M GOING TO MAKE A BARRIER. IT WILL LAST FOR ONLY A MONTH, BUT THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH."

Leaving behind these last words, the live feed was cut short. Nobody could see what she was doing anymore, but they could see a grey filament spreading above the Earth.

It was visible from all around the world.

Seth could be seen standing, looking at the empty space, his eyes pooled with tears. 'No… Mum.' But just then, a transmission entered his mind.

'My son, stay strong my son.... No matter what you become, I'll always be proud... And I've been meaning to tell you today, your father... he's alive. Go search for him. He didn't abandon u....' Before she could finish her transmission, it was cut off.

The saintess of Elyon, Maya Bane, was dead.
