Chapter 16 - strange saviour

"The clock's ticking, brat," the anonymous figure finally snapped out, sheathing her blazing knife back to her waist. "You've got mere minutes to stay alive, so you might wanna hurry up here."

Damn! Jake guess right–it was a girl. But her voice...shit, it didn't sound like Mia at all. The tone was a little bit sharper, the words were more clipped than Mia's own and damn! She look younger from her voice.

Who's she then? The only supposed friend he had made since he arrived here was Mia, so who the hell would think of coming to rescue his ass if not her?

Jake just kept his thoughts sensitive, still waiting to confirm his suspicions; if it was really Mia, pretending to act like a movie star like she'd say or someone new character in this game. His eyes couldn't help it as it narrowed again at the figure, still standing closed to the open cell bars.

The faint light of her flames was really helping out with the illumination, revealing her features clearly. She really didn't look like Mai.

"Okay, are you going to keep on staring at me like a slack-jawed idiot, or are you going to suit up and get out of this freaking place before the Mammites shows up, huh?" she yelled, her voice jolting Jake back to reality.

Mammites? What the hell is that?

Jake's eyes snapped back into focus at her words, his gaze suddenly meeting her fiery stare. It was so awkward! But she didn't drop the stares.

She still grasped the flammable stick tightly, flickering light, dancing across her face making her look like a ghost.

For a moment, both of them just stared at each other like some morons–lost in the jungle.

Should I trust her? But what if it was all a set-up? He glanced around the cell, as if searching for any hidden danger around.

But damn! The girl didn't seem to be hiding any fucking thing. She looked... anxious. Almost desperate….

He eyed her warily, taking in her slender build and the determined look on her half-mask face. She didn't resemble the hulking Robose giants with their skeletal paint at all.

And why would she come alone if she meant to harm him? She wouldn't right?

Who knows; she could be an angel sent to save him.

She threw up her hands, her palms slapping against her mask forehead, feeling so disappointed. She was hell pissed at Jakes sluggishness.

Was he really a slug?

If she wasn't mistaking, she could swear that they've spend more than two minutes standing there, just staring at each other, like chimps.

"Oh my gosh, can you please stop staring at me like a hawk and get the fuck out of here?" Her words tumbled out in a frustrated rush. She felt like putting Jake in her patch bag and then, get the hell out of the cell, herself.

If that was possible, you'd bet she would do that from the look on her face. Jake was just so terrible. Like hell!

'That's it! She was definitely not one of the bad guys.' Jake affirmed in his thoughts as he flicked his eyebrows at her, in confirmation to his thoughts.

Something in her tone actually clicked into place. She didn't sound like the medieval-era people that he had encountered. Her English was just too modern to hide, too familiar.

Perhaps, she was one of them–one of those people that came from other planets like himself and Mia. Could they be more?

Binnnng!!

A loud clang noise echoed through the tunnel, making both of them jump subconsciously. It was weird, but even the girl couldn't help it. Guess she wasn't expecting that anyway.

She whipped her head to the left; the side from which she just heard the loud bang. Her eyes went scanning the darkness, but it seems like nothing was coming. Not even an ant show up. She turned back and look at the sloth she came to rescue still standing like a statue.

Hell! Is he crazy?

"Common dude, get out!" she roared at him, forcing Jake to popped out.

Jake legs suddenly seemed to move of their own accord–as if they were tired of waiting for Jake to order them–carrying him toward the mysterious, strange girl that was waiting for him.

He didn't know why, but he just didn't trust this person. How his leg move from the cell to where she was, was just so crazy. He didn't command them. Fuck!

As he moved closer, the girl gaze flicked back to him, not looking so please at all. Which Jake didn't mind though.

Her left eye brow raised upward a bit. She couldn't help it as her eyes went along, peering at Jake awkward attire.

"What? The cloths? Trust me, it wasn't my idea." Jake defended, as if he was reading her mind on how awkward his outfit look. She mouthed something under her breath as she turned her gaze from him, but Jake couldn't quite catch what it was.

'Did she just insulted me or what?' he asked in his thoughts, shaking his head. 'Anyways, I guess I'll just suck it up and get used to it. Not like it's the first time. Have heard that before, at least from the big dumpy giant guy and of course, from Mia, countless of times. Maybe everyone here does that for a living.'

The girl suddenly shot him a

disgust gaze as he caught him standing, looking at the ceiling. She shook her head sorrowfully as if she could hear Jake silly thoughts.

It was as if she'd rather be anywhere else, doing something meaningful, than helping this slow jerk. He was damn sluggish. She turned her gaze from him, throading forward, almost living Jake behind.

After walking for some few meters, she turned around again, glancing back over her shoulder again as if she was monitoring his locomotion. Her eyes rolled in frustration as she still caught Jake moping around the hallway like a madman.

"What the hell is wrong with you, huh?" she snapped at Jake who was busying flarting his big eyes around the intricate design of the ancient walls. They look very ancient. "Can't you see I'm trying to get us out of here?"

"Oh! Sorry, my bad." Jake said, scratching his hair roughly, his legs lengthening to catch up with her rapid pace. Although, his gaze were still dancing around the walls like a maniac.

Thanks to the flame that was in her hands, casting flickering shadows around the tunnel, making it seem as though the carvings were moving, twisting and turning in the light.

Jake could filled up his eyes with the stunning ancient images from the walls. They were imagery of some royal stuff. He could spot some drawings of kings, queens, some maidens, guards….and fuck! A cat, sitting beside the throne.

The girl stopped abruptly, her eyes went scanning the wall as if searching for an invisible door or something.

Naive jake followed her gaze, darting round the stone walls too. His heart got sinked as he soon realized they were trapped. The walls in front of them were freaking solid, with no visible openings.

"So, what now? We're stuck?" Jake asked, his voice was totally laced with concern–not really for her, but for himself. The girl suddenly spun around, her ninja like mask-face were literally blazing with anger at jake.

"Can you just shut the fuck up?" she screamed at him, swaying her hands in frustration. Even with the mask hidjap that she wore, her voice was still very loud. She stepped forward closer to Jake, her face was just an inche away from his.

Jake body flinched a bit, his eyes locked on hers took. Which was a bit scaring for him. He didn't know why, but damn! He always find it so teensy to stand straight, staring at a girl, eye balls to eye balls. It was so hard for him.

He could still remember how he managed to stand before his crush, trying to propose love to her. Jeez!

That day was so humiliating as he ended up staring at her for what felt like hours without having to say anything. Well, he later ended up borrowing a book from her. Which he never intend to.

Back to reality, this strange girl claiming to be his saviour just reminded him of that day with her awkward stares. Her irises seemed to even be flashing with fury too, and for a brief moment–which felt like forever to jake–they just kept on the stares.

Without a word, she finally turned away, her hands rummaging through her pockets. She seems to produced a handful of small, looking dark boxes, each one no larger than a thumb.

Jake's eyes widened as she started by placing the small devices on the wall. They gum to the wall as she placed them, one by one. After a few seconds, they began to beep ominously. Like a time bomb.

Tin!

Tin!

Tin!

"Fucked! You wanna commit suicide? Seriously?" Jake asked, his body was already shaking as the thought of bomb, blast through his mind. "Why the hell did you take me along if you wanted to kill yourself? Would have preferred to be stabbed by a knife than getting my whole body explode into a dust, fuck!"

"Can you for once keep quiet? Huh?" The girl's eyes flashed again with anger as she stern her gaze at him. She spat to the ground, throwing her face away from Jake.

"How? I can't fucking keep quiet okay! Look girl, you wanna blow of this place and we are only few inches away from it. Have you thought of that?"
