Chapter 273 - Chapter 272: Eula's Concerns

The Reconnaissance squad rarely encountered such an easy task. There were almost no monsters around the Thousand Winds Temple, and the mission was going smoothly.

Yu Xie and Ei had temporarily "joined" the Reconnaissance squad, working alongside the other members and performing their respective duties during the patrol.

Time passed slowly, and before they knew it, it was evening.

The sky was painted with the glow of the setting sun, with fiery clouds hanging on the horizon, as if they were burning.

Throughout the day, Eula had been very focused on her work. Now that it was time for the shift change, she stepped down from her patrol post and headed to the makeshift camp to prepare dinner for the Reconnaissance squad.

When they were out on missions, Eula often found herself preparing dinner for the squad members, just as she was doing now.

Being away from home and out in the wilderness meant everything had to be kept simple.

She gathered the ingredients, set up the cooking tools, and lit the fire to begin cooking.

Although the cooking was simple, the delicious aroma gradually began to fill the air after a while.

As she cooked, Eula couldn't help but start thinking about what Ei had told her earlier.

Ei had shared Yu Xie's past with her.

During the Archon War, the Guardian General of Guili Assembly, the Commander of the Okuzumeshuu in Inazuma, and the former Vice-Grand Master of the Knights of Favonius in Mondstadt…

Yu Xie had lived through countless years, held many identities, lived different lives, and met many people.

There were many others, like Ei, who had waited for Yu Xie for a long time.

When compared to that, her own few years of waiting seemed insignificant.

Even a few years felt unbearably painful—how had those hundreds or even thousands of years been spent?

Eula found it hard to imagine. But there was one thing she was certain of: she couldn't give up.

Yu Xie had taught her so much. Before she had a chance to say thank you, he had quietly left. Now, she didn't want to let that opportunity slip away again.

Perhaps those who had once shared a bond with Yu Xie thought the same way as she did.

Like Miss Ei, for example.

Despite that, her thoughts couldn't be changed.

But when compared to the hundreds or thousands of years, her few years of waiting truly seemed insignificant…

Many complicated thoughts mixed together in her mind as Eula continued to think while preparing dinner.

At this time, Yu Xie and Ei also finished their patrols and came back to the camp.

Seeing Eula preparing dinner, the two of them sat down beside her.

"I didn't expect the one preparing dinner to be the captain," Yu Xie said with a smile.

"The rule of the Reconnaissance squad is that whoever is free during dinner time prepares the meal," Eula replied. "Given the limited conditions, this is all I can cook. If we get the chance another day, I'll make a proper meal for you all to try."

The aroma of the dinner grew more and more fragrant, signaling that it was nearly ready.

There weren't many seasonings; it was the natural fragrance of the ingredients.

Although this meal couldn't compare to a finely crafted dish, being able to eat such a dinner in the wilderness—rather than compressed rations—was already quite nice.

After dinner, the night slowly descended.

The light in the sky grew fainter and fainter.

The Reconnaissance squad would be spending the night here, and naturally, the patrol tasks couldn't be halted even during the night.

However, every member of the squad felt that this mission was far easier than any previous ones—practically like a vacation.

There were no monsters appearing in the area, and the scenery was quite pleasant. It almost felt like a sightseeing trip.

As the night wore on into the early hours, most of the squad members had already gone into their tents to rest, except for those on night duty.

Ei had also gone to rest, but Yu Xie found himself unable to sleep. He left his tent and stepped outside.

The night was deep, and under the moonlight, the ruins of the Thousand Winds Temple took on a mysterious aura. The surrounding scenery also appeared more hazy and dreamlike.

Yu Xie stepped out of the camp, intending to wander around and clear his mind.

To his surprise, near the edge of a high cliff, he saw Eula sitting on the grass. The moonlight illuminated her figure as she gazed into the distance. She seemed to be lost in thought or perhaps just daydreaming.

After a moment of contemplation, Yu Xie walked over.

"Eula," he greeted, taking a seat beside her. "I thought you had gone to rest."

"Couldn't sleep, so I came out for a walk," Eula replied.

But Eula's demeanor seemed a bit unnatural, as though she were avoiding Yu Xie's gaze.

Yu Xie noticed this slight oddity. After thinking for a moment, he asked,

"What's wrong?"

"What do you mean, what's wrong?" Eula replied, still looking into the distance.

"You seem to be avoiding my gaze," Yu Xie said, looking at her.

"I'm not," Eula immediately turned her head to look at Yu Xie. But after a few seconds, she instinctively looked away again.

"You see?" Yu Xie sighed lightly. "What's bothering you?"

"I…" Eula hesitated. "I just feel that… compared to those who have waited for you for hundreds or even thousands of years, I don't matter at all."

Soft words, yet filled with deep emotion.

"I never imagined you had gone through so much. Sometimes, I even feel… like we're people from different worlds…"

"Eula…"

"I…"

"Eula!" Yu Xie raised his voice, placing both hands on her shoulders and firmly turning her around to face him. He looked into her beautiful but confused eyes. "Listen to me."

Eula fell silent, as though frozen in place.

"I may not remember the past, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen. Whether it's what happened between us or between me and others," Yu Xie said slowly, "whether it was a thousand years ago, a hundred years ago, or just a few years ago, those things truly happened, didn't they?"

Eula nodded blankly.

"And since they happened, they can't be changed, right?"

Eula nodded again.

"And how could we not be from the same world? Aren't we here in the same world right now?"

The night breeze brushed past their ears, gently stirring the strands of Eula's hair.

For a moment, Eula froze again. She looked at Yu Xie in front of her and suddenly realized that her thoughts had likely been unnecessary.

How strange—what was she even thinking? After all, Yu Xie was right here in front of her.
