Chapter 272 - Chapter 10: Scoring System

Makima's desire to recruit the Yamai sisters into Japan's Anti-Devil Division was based on many considerations.

They were friendly to humans, powerful, and rational enough to communicate—these basic factors didn't need much elaboration.

But the most important reason was that she didn't want these two high-ranking Devils to be recruited by other countries' governments.

Sooner or later, other governments would realize the Yamai sisters' intentions, and they would likely try to recruit them, just as Makima had.

Once this level of combat power was acquired by another country, especially by those countries that subtly viewed Makima as an enemy, the existing international situation could be completely disrupted.

Therefore, she needed to act before other countries did.

She had to bring these unstable factors under her control.

By doing so, she could continue with her long-planned schemes in the human world without worrying about the Yamai sisters becoming a blade in the hands of those trying to cause disruption.

"Up until now, you two have fought countless times, but there's still no clear winner," Makima continued. "If you both are willing to join the Anti-Devil Division and fight for humanity, we can set up a scoring system. The one with the higher score would be the one who gets the title of Wind Spirit Yamai, how does that sound?"

This was the simplest reward mechanism in the workplace.

Whoever worked the hardest would get promoted.

But in this case, simplicity was the most effective.

As long as the Yamai sisters agreed to this system and joined Makima's jurisdiction, they would no longer be seen as uncontrollable elements.

If used properly, they could even become her trump cards, making other countries more wary of her.

As she thought about how to maximize the value of the Yamai sisters, Makima's face still wore a warm, pleasant smile.

"I see, a scoring system, we haven't tried that before," Kaguya Yamai mused. "But it sounds interesting. Yuzuru, what do you think?"

"Question: If we join the Anti-Devil Division, what exactly will we need to do?" Yuzuru Yamai asked a more specific question. "What is the scoring system based on? And if there are disagreements, how will they be resolved?"

"The main factor in deciding who the true Wind Spirit is, of course, is power. Whoever slays more Devils, causes less destruction, and gets a higher score, will win," Makima explained. "If there's a dispute over the final decision, we can have a democratic vote among the Anti-Devil Division, and the majority will decide."

The Yamai sisters seemed somewhat interested, but still hesitated.

Under Makima's watchful gaze, they began to whisper among themselves.

Makima didn't rush them; she just patiently waited for their final decision.

In truth, their hesitation was just for show to Makima.

The true reason they came to Tokyo was to join Japan's Anti-Devil Division.

Due to their recent activities, all the governments around the world had reached their limit in tolerating the Yamai sisters.

While so far, the governments had only released bounty rewards to encourage private Devil hunters to deal with them, if the world were to unite and declare them a common enemy of humanity, they would no longer be able to live freely.

Spirits were indeed powerful, and the Yamai sisters' strength was at the very top of this world.

But this world's high-end combatants weren't weak either.

While in terms of pure violence, no one in this world could rival them, the strength of high-ranking Devils didn't come solely from violence—it came from their powers and the abilities they were born with.

Whether it was Kaguya Yamai or Yuzuru Yamai, neither of them wanted to wake up to a blade at their throat, or fall victim to some strange curse and suddenly die, or turn into a fool who only shouts "Halloween."

Therefore, obtaining an official identity, transitioning from enemies of humanity to helpers, and shifting the conflict to another direction was crucial.

By doing so, no matter what trouble they caused in the future, other countries would no longer bother them.

Instead, they would target the country that had given them official status.

Of course, in addition to this, there was another reason they wanted to join humanity's side.

They were simply tired of their nomadic life.

After some fake negotiations, Kaguya Yamai cleared her throat and said to Makima, "We think you've provided a good suggestion. A fair referee is exactly what we need."

"So, the agreement is reached?"

"The agreement is reached."

The three of them shook hands, each hiding their true intentions beneath the surface, not wanting the other to see their inner thoughts.

But regardless of what was going on inside their minds, the agreement had been made.

"Then, starting today, both of you will be members of Japan's Anti-Devil Division, Section Four," Makima said. "Let's not waste time. I'll take you both to register your identities now."

The Yamai sisters naturally had no objections.

They followed Makima back to the car parked on the street across from the burger shop. Makima opened the door.

"Mak... Makima-sama..."

Sitting in the car, waiting for his superior to return, Hayakawa Aki was stunned.

He looked at the Yamai sisters following Makima and couldn't immediately grasp what had just happened.

"I convinced them to join the Public Security," Makima explained simply. "Though they are Devils, from now on, they'll be working with us, just like Power."

At this, Hayakawa Aki's gaze toward Makima grew more respectful.

As expected of Makima-sama, she was amazing.

She had even managed to convince these global-scale disaster-level Devils to join humanity's side.

Not only had she neutralized their potential threat, but she could now have them work to ensure humanity's safety.

"Aki-kun, they've just joined the Anti-Devil Division, and there are still many things they don't understand," Makima continued. "From now on, I'll need you to take good care of them."

Hayakawa Aki froze for a moment, his gaze shifting toward the Yamai sisters.

Though they looked like harmless young girls, as a Devil hunter, he knew what kind of monsters these two really were.

Taking care of them?

Staying with these two, he probably wouldn't even be able to keep himself safe.

"Makima-sama, I'm afraid I don't have that ability."

After a brief silence, he forced a smile and said, "And I also need to look after Power and Denji..."

"Aki-kun, I'm confident in your abilities, which is why I've entrusted this responsibility to you."

Makima's hand rested on Hayakawa Aki's shoulder, and she flashed him a smile that conveyed her determination to get the most out of the situation.

"Don't disappoint me."
