The sounds of sirens filled the air, and the rain poured down heavily.
Kai huffed and stood up, jumping towards one of the guards.
STAB!
This guard was 106. 106 was a jock; one little knife wasn't going to knock him off balance just yet.
Guard 106 held Kai by the neck and flung him to the ground. The other guards came in and shouted, "Clear!"
Guard 106 shifted and—
BANG!!
They shot a tranquilizer into Kai's chest. Kai stood up and held his chest. "Whoa… hey, what was that?"
The guard smiled. "Just a little something to keep your abilities in flight mode… you get what I mean?"
Kai staggered. Lila jumped out instantly and waved her hands, draining air out of the guards. They all clutched their throats, coughing and gasping for breath.
But Lila felt off. She held her throat and began coughing. Kai only watched, standing still before rushing towards her. "Stop! Stop! You're hurting yourself!"
As he withdrew her hands and dragged her away, the other guards regained their breath. They all huffed and panted. Guard 106 reached for his walkie-talkie.
"Sir, the other girl's ability is something extraordinary. She almost wiped out ten of us here."
The frontman gritted his teeth. "You fool! What were the tranquilizers for?!"
Guard 106 stammered. "We shot the boy, but it didn't take any effect… yet."
The frontman continued, "It takes time. Fire another at him to increase the effect. It can probably make him unconscious."
The guard nodded, about to put off the call. "Oh, and are your ears not working properly? The police are already here. Just lead them to the ground floor. I'm on the roof… I can probably kill the girl from here."
The guard nodded and left.
The frontman adjusted his sniper and said to himself, "Will the Apostles show up or not? We are out of time now."
---
Camila and Ryu arrived shortly and dashed towards the factory. The other police began damaging the door.
Ryu asked George, "Is there any other way in?"
George turned and replied, "Not that we know of."
---
Kai held Lila and dashed for the elevator leading to the front door. Lila looked at her hands. "What happened out there, Kai?"
Kai faced her and smiled. "Am i not supposed to ask you that."
"Well, two possible explanations: either fear, or, as I've always feared, our abilities have limitations and you're probably overstressed."
Lila still looked at her hands, thinking. "Limitations…"
Kai broke in, saying, "None of that is going to matter if we can't make it out of here alive."
BANG!
A bullet struck Lila, knocking her off balance.
"Lila! Lila!"
The doors finally came open and the police rushed inside. Camila and Ryu exchanged a look at each other before entering.
Kai held his hands and tried to create illusions, but that did not work. He dragged Lila and put her in his arms before running out.
The window came in handy. He couldn't just let the police find out he was there. Kai pushed Lila over and jumped off too.
As he raised her up and began to run, the front guard chuckled and said, "Gotcha."
BANG!
Kai fell hard on the ground. He looked up and saw the front guard reloading. He summoned all his strength and stood up, going behind a wall.
The front guard got angry and rushed downstairs. Kai wavered his hands to try and create an illusion, but still, he couldn't. He wanted to set an illusion up to distract the police and the guards.
He sighed and staggered, carrying Lila. "Looks like we are on our own."
"Maybe it was when that guard shot me, but what could have messed with Lila's powers? Or truly, truly, are our powers limited?"
"I just hope I'll still have my abilities."
He carried Lila and went down a sewer.
---
Lila raised her head in pain and asked, "Where… do you know where you're going?"
Kai, still struggling with her weight and his wound, replied, "Not exactly, but the sewer usually leads to tunnels or hideouts… Look at the arrows on the walls."
Lila glanced at the wall. Kai continued, "We'll follow this way to my apartment."
They staggered as they walked through the tunnel. Soon, they approached Kai's hideout. Kai pushed the door open. "Home sweet home."
He fell on the ground. Lila also crouched on the floor. They had both lost a lot of blood. He crashed the table, picking up his cell phone.
Lila glanced at him and said weakly, "What are you doing?"
Kai could make out a smile and answered, "It's my doctor. Clearly, we can't go to the hospital in this state."
Lila smiled too and replied, "Your spy doctor, you mean."
Kai smiled and replied, "He has been doing an amazing job keeping me alive…
Maybe too amazing."
Lila looked at the windows. "Is it even safe to be here? Didn't you tell me your apartments were being watched?"
Kai frowned. "Hopefully not all the time. Besides, can you think of a better place to hide?"
Lila sighed. "You're right. The floor seems fine to me."
"How long is it going to take before your doctor comes around? I need to leave tomorrow."
Kai held his wound. "Soon." He winced in pain.
Lila turned towards him and held his hand. "Will they believe I was involved in a car crash and died? Even if we survive tonight… we are going to jail."
"Kai… why do you never use a gun?"
"And why did you use one earlier?"
Kai raised his head and replied, "It was the only solution, wasn't it?"
"To protect you."
Lila turned and faced him. "Then why… a knife?"
Kai looked at his bloody hands and replied, "It's too easy…
You just pull the trigger and…
Lives are ended effortlessly… as if they are…
…meaningless."
Lila's head tilted onto his shoulder. In shock, Kai held her. "Lila! Lila!"
