Wouter assured Celeste he'd catch the mouse—and if he didn't, he'd let her know. That was the last thing he told her before he drove off, leaving her behind to watch his car slowly shrink in the distance. As she stood there, enjoying the cool winter air, Celeste felt her phone vibrate.
"Tiel?" Celeste asked the moment she answered.
"How was it? Are you home now?" Tiel asked.
Celeste smiled a little. "Are you worried about me?"
"Of course I'm worried about you. What if something happened?" Tiel demanded. She could hear him light a cigarette, then exhale the smoke. She guessed he was standing on the balcony.
"Don't worry, Tilly. Wouter was just heartbroken, that's all," Celeste told him, standing still. It was getting dark, but she wanted to stay in the cold a little longer.
"Well, heartbroken people do crazy things. I should know. But how did it go?"
