Cherreads

Chapter 19 - Chapter 19

The air crackled with frosty magic on the morning of the Northern Lights Carnival's grand opening. My friends, Queens Ginny, Harley, and Kristy, and I strolled through the vibrant tents and swirling lights, the air buzzing with excitement. The rides spun and swayed, a dizzying ballet of color, while food trucks lined the perimeter, offering a siren's call of hot cocoa topped with whipped cream and cinnamon rolls that perfumed the air with sugary sweetness.

"Look at that Ferris wheel!" Ginny exclaimed, her finger pointing towards the sky. Its lights danced in mesmerizing patterns, a direct echo of the auroras that had inspired our winter carnival. "Fancy a ride?"

"Absolutely! I call dibs on the top!" Harley replied, her eyes sparkling with mischievous energy. "But first, we need to work the crowd, smile for the people. They deserve to feel the royal spirit."

Laughter and music swirled around us as we walked, the joyful sounds infectious. Guests waved enthusiastically, their faces lit with pure, unadulterated delight. A soft, warm feeling blossomed in my chest. This carnival, our carnival, was a testament to hard work, collaboration, and a shared vision. It was... perfect.

Then, a chill snaked down my spine, primal and unsettling. I glanced over my shoulder, searching for the source, but saw nothing out of place. Yet, the feeling persisted, a nagging sense of being watched by unseen eyes. Shaking it off, I forced my attention back to my friends as they engaged in an animated conversation with a group of children gathered around a magician, his hands moving with impossible speed.

After what felt like an eternity of greeting guests and posing for pictures, the other Queens and I decided to explore the revered snowflake maze, a labyrinthine creation adorned with twinkling lights and shimmering, snow-like decorations. Each twist and turn felt like stepping deeper into a winter wonderland. The laughter of the crowd faded with each step, replaced by the hushed whispers of the maze itself.

I wandered slightly ahead, the uneasy feeling from earlier clinging to me, intensifying with each step. I glanced back, trying to appear casual. "You guys coming?"

In the heart of the maze, I rounded a corner and froze. There, nestled amidst the faux snow, was a small cluster of delicate blue snow lilies. They swayed gently as if touched by a phantom breeze. Next to them, resting on the crystalline ground, was a neatly folded note.

My fingers trembled as I picked up the note. My breath hitched. I smoothed the creases within my fingers and spoke the words aloud, my voice barely a whisper to the maze, "I can see you, little flame. You're so close to finding me, yet still so far."

My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat of curiosity and apprehension. A ghostly whisper of recognition flickered in my mind, but I couldn't quite grasp it. Was my shadow starting to take over? Or was it something else? I peered into the maze, half-expecting to see a dark figure lurking in the shadows, but I saw nothing.

Pushing aside the momentary surge of fear, I slipped the note into my pocket and hurried back the way I came. As I emerged from the maze, the vibrant world of the carnival washed over me once more, the joyful sounds of laughter and music a balm to my frayed nerves.

"There you are!" Kristy beamed as I rejoined my friends, her brow furrowed with concern. "We thought we'd lost you."

I forced a smile, waving off her worry. "Just got caught up in the magic of the maze, I suppose. Did you see those snow lilies? They were gorgeous."

"They were beautiful!" Harley chimed in, her enthusiasm unwavering. "But we missed you! Let's head to the carousel next!"

As we walked, the feeling of being watched returned, a shadowy presence lurking just beyond the periphery of my vision. I tried to shake it off, determined to enjoy the festivities with my friends. But no matter where we ventured, I couldn't shake the feeling of eyes on me, tracking my every move. It was unnerving.

Later, surrounded by the laughter and the spinning colors of the carnival, I leaned in close to my friends. "Have you ever felt like you were being watched?"

"Like a cute guy checking you out?" Ginny teased, winking.

"Or a secret admirer?" Harley added, laughing lightly. "Maybe we should just focus on having fun!"

Their giggles and shrieks of delight faded into a dull hum as I slipped into my own thoughts. The note felt heavy in my pocket. Why was he watching me? Why wouldn't he reveal himself? Who was he?

As the night wore on, the carnival glowed beneath the stars, a beacon of joy against the night sky. But my heart raced, a frantic rhythm against the backdrop of laughter and light. I was no longer just a happy queen enjoying a festival. The message, the thrill, the fear – something was about to unfold, and whether I liked it or not, I would have to confront it head-on. The night was just beginning, and even amidst the joy of the carnival, my own personal adventure, whatever it might be, was only just beginning.
