In a fortified city, its size often reflects its economic power.
What that meant was simple: the capital of the Hanover territory, once governed by Mariel's family, was comparatively small.
"The innkeeper said there were no mercenaries or soldier-types staying at her place," Wataru recalled.
"Yes. But the owner of a back-alley inn told us there were five unusual guests lodging there," Mariel reported.
Normally, disclosing information about guests would be out of the question.But because of the good reputation of Mariel's noble family and the trust they had built with the townspeople, this information was shared willingly.
Even though her family no longer held their noble title, many still believed Mariel wouldn't misuse such information. And considering that ignoring suspicious visitors could result in future trouble, the decision wasn't wrong.
