Cherreads

Chapter 5 - Big Gamble.

The situation of Kimberry town is now dire, with the margrave of the region pass away, the bandits surprisingly organized, and the royal capital was too busy with conflicts at the souther region and have little troops to spare, the town now under siege of organize group of marauders.

Huey, Cheryl, and Brigid are now watching the situation from the town's hall, where it was now become temporaly head quarter for the town's defenders.

"The northern gate was heavily under attacks and unlikely to be able to hold out any longer." The town's guard captain saying in worry.

"How many men we have there?" Cheryl ask as he watch at the north.

"Around 500, most of us the town's guard are there." The guard captain answer.

 "Most of?"

"Yes, they mainly attack the northern gate so I put the most capable bodies there, the other directions meet with only skirmish so far, and the southern gate have no sight of attacks attemp."

"How about the enemy? how much firepower they have?"

"They only have makeshift ballista and men carry logs as ram so far."

"Their attacks are lesser each times too, I presume they started to run low on manpower." Another guard comment.

Cheryl look at the situation with worry, normally something like this should be easy enough, the bandits are normally impatience, so they're unlikely to do a siege, but as far as he could see, they're too prepared for this kind of attacks.

"What's in your mind?" Huey ask Cheryl as he seems to worry as well.

"I just...., thinking that this might be a bigger problem than it should be." Cheryl reply.

 "What do you mean?"

 "I can't really explain..."

"Anyway, what should we do now?" Huey ask, ready his bow.

"Those marauders are likely try to attack from multiple directions due to thier inorganize, we should seperate, I'll leading the defense at the northern gate, Brigid remain here with Angie as last line of defense, and you, Huey, remain here as reinforcement, go and assist anywhere that need." Cheryl telling his plan in serious tone.

"I'll lead the troops and went ahead, please get yourself ready as soon as possible." The town's guard captain reply as he went off.

"Don't like being treat as second choice, but we~ll, guess there's no other option..." Brigid reply in relaxing tone, even through his looks is completely serious as he rest his lance on shoulder.

"I'll remain here and take care of the injures, please, do not risk yourself unnescessary." Angie say in worry.

"Alright, let's get going then." Huey said as he look at Cheryl, who rushing down to catch up with guard captain, while Huey in the other hand, jump and crimb down from collidor instead.

Meanwhile, the frontline is getting more intense as the battle raging on.

The bandits fought hard to breach the defensive line, yet th town still stand defiance.

"Chieft! We've lost more than half of our assault units now! Those pesky guards and militias fought even harder!"

"It said they're somehow got the reinforcement! At this rate we won't be able to take the town!"

 "What shall we do? Boss!"

The sound of battles and voices fo his rackies echoe right into his ears, the bandit leader was both furious and confuse.

It wasn't suppose to be this bad, his plan was perfect. With the town's water supply has been poisoned, and the communication being cut off, the town should've been his in no time.

And most of all, he got the supplier to fund his ambitious plan, with the said supplier arrived from nowhere and willing to fund him this plan, he's cofident that nothing could go wrong, his dream of not just quit being just a lowly bandit, but also own a land and become rich coming into his mind. And now, this is what he's been into.

"What's wrong, Larry? Stuck in your own mind?" A playful voice of a woman coming from behind him. The bandits leader Lary turn his face back and ask her in frustation.

"What's wrong? Everything is wrong here! You said that with the Margrave gone and all we have, we should have taken this town in few days, and now look at this! Almost a week and we still stuck!" He yell at his 'supplier'.

"Aw come on, things still not that bad, you see? You still got plenty of men, and the northern gate is about to falling apart now..."

"We're low on foods now, and my boys are being more impatience, if we cannot take the town today, they will likely quit here." Larry reply and ask the woman in cloak back.

"You said that with all these weapons, supplies and plan, we're able to take the town, and now!? That damn town got reinforcement! If we failed to take the gate, then they'll riot! Just like the other days!" Larry yell in anger, he have to deal with some dissent and potential mutiny a lot due to many of his minions don't like this plan.

"Then why don't you just attack somewhere else? Those town's guards and militias are likely gathering at that gate to defend with all they have, the other spots should be weaker." The mysterious woman ask.

"Sound better, let see if your plan wasn't all failures." Larry get back to the rear to gather his remaining men to follow the plan.

"Idiot, all these failures are yours to begin with, you impatience fools." The woman whispering as the bandits chieft walk away.

"Well, it's seems things no longer according to plan now, maybe get out of here would be a better idea." She said and walk away, slowly disappear into the darkness as dusk come in.

The eastern gate was the most unguarded location, according to their knowledge due to there is the most difficult to attack, with a canal from the main river between the walls and the field act as additional defense.

Larry is now desperate to win the situations, seeing this as a perfect chance to turn the situations into his favor once again, he personally lead the remaining of his band, the most loyal ones, into the ambush.

Hiding in the tall grass and cover in the dark, moving like this risking his forces to be too seperate, but any sight of light could telling the town's guard about his coming, which he cannot allow.

"Everybody ready?" Larry ask his goons again for sure, he was about to make his big gamble, to win this battle and claim his prize along with regain his men trust, or die trying, there's no turning back.

With a nod as signal, Larry wave his hand, and all of his men rain their arrows at the wall to dispatch the guards using torches light on the wall as their sight.

No sound or respond, it seems the guards here either all dead or away somewhere, Larry's heart beating as he has strange feeling, while his men quickly go to the gate and knock it down with their logs and maul.

It didn't takes too long for them to breach the gate, and inside looks empty. Even the simple mind like the bandits could feels something was wrong.

Larry and his goons walk in slowly and look around, he found one of the guards falling down from the wall with arrows struck on his body, but when he take a closer look.

 It was a dummy.

"Shit...." It take Larry to immediately know what this all means, his men scream in fear and surprise as Larry look back at the empty town.

Rain of arrows, both light in fire and not, flying at his direction, as many of his men start to run away from the ambush, he look with acceptance.

 His gamble, was lost.

"Bullseye." Huey, from the rooftop of the building whisper after seeing his arrow hit the mark, as many archers behind him continue raining their arrows at defenseless bandits.
