Kaia felt the weight of reality on her shoulders, all at once suffocating her. No power was capable of quieting the hunger pounding inside of her. Midvale was silent, as long shadows were cast over it, by the full moon. Raine was already at the rooftop waiting for her. Kaia made up her mind to meet her at their customary rendezvous.
Raine met her at their usual spot on the rooftop"You need to control it." Her words were serious,instituting authority, or "it'll control you " she said. Kaia nodded, her eyes glowing faintly in the moonlight. "I'm trying."
Her fingers were alive with silver light as though infused with the moon. "I'm trying," Kaia said.
Their debate was conflicted with struggle, and not only internal. A figure closing from the alley still made her muscles tense: a man whose very existence was capable of halting the air altogether. "I'm here to help," he proclaimed. The air swirled around them llike shar prongs of velvet only setting the stage for the true danger wrapped in his voice. "But time is running out."
Kaia froze as conflict collided inside like flint and steel, struggling to ignite. Help or threat? She had no clue, and in the end, it made not the slenderest of differences.
Kaia choked back tears. The pulsing silence of the city cocooning them was a prison her mind had succumbed to. "You don't know what you've become," was whispered, danger threading each word reminding her what covert pandemonium lay dormant just beneath the surface— and it sent a shudder cascading through her.
"And neither do they."
Kaia underwent a change from which she could not retreat. Not only did she realise that her metamorphosis was the beginning, but that dark forces much ancient than Midvale were wanting something she never wished to part with: her blood.
