Chapter 17 - Chapter 16 – Soil, Song, and Sanctity

The dawn broke through thin strands of fog, casting a silvery glow across the fields. Dew clung to the rows of cultivated soil like tiny crystals, sparkling faintly beneath the weak sunlight. Birds chirped in the distance, and the low hum of the Resonance Pillar echoed through the aura field like a heartbeat.

Riven stood at the edge of his plot, boots planted firmly in the soil, hands on his hips.

He glanced at the rows of budding Greencress—a leafy vegetable that had taken well to the sanctified soil. But something was missing.

"System," he asked, voice calm, "is there a way to directly influence the quality of crops through the Sanctum Ring?"

Affirmative.Activating: [Sanctum Skill – Aura Weaving: Beginner Tier]Description: Allows the user to bind threads of aura into soil or flora, enhancing vitality and growth.

Warning: High spiritual strain. Use sparingly.

"So… kind of like threading your will into the land."

Correct.

Riven crouched beside a patch of Greencress and held out his ringed hand. Slowly, he let the aura trickle from the band. Thin threads of pale gold extended from his fingertips, seeping into the stalks and leaves of the plants. He closed his eyes and focused.

A mental image formed—each Greencress a tiny network of cells, light, and rhythm. He nudged gently, enhancing flow, urging roots to dig deeper, leaves to stretch fuller.

Riven opened his eyes and gasped. The leaves of the Greencress shimmered faintly, darker green than before, pulsing with life.

Zorua, from a few meters away, tilted her head and barked softly in admiration.

"Guess this is what farming with power really feels like," Riven muttered.

Later that morning, Riven prepared a meal from harvested sprouts, berry paste, and wildroots—a fragrant, earthy dish cooked over a small campfire stove. The Pokémon gathered in a loose semicircle as he laid their portions in handmade bowls.

Riolu bowed slightly before eating. Zorua, predictably, pawed at the bowl playfully before scarfing her portion.

After the meal, Riven sat on the porch steps, watching the clouds roll across the sky. Something stirred in him—a quiet whisper that he was slowly becoming part of this land.

His attention drifted to the Sanctum Field.

"Time for the next phase," he murmured, retrieving his notes.

The final structure on the Sanctum upgrade list was called The Soilheart Basin, an ancient receptacle meant to collect spiritual condensation—essentially drawing ambient life energy from the atmosphere and using it to infuse the land.

The blueprints glowed faintly in his interface:

Sanctum Project: Soilheart Basin (0/1)

Requirements:– 2x Polished Stone Core– 1x Elemental Dust (Any Type)– Activate Basin under full moonlight

Bonus Effect: Small passive SP regen over time when near basin

"Polished stone cores… might need to refine some of the hardstone we gathered."

Riven walked over to the forge station, gathering leftover hardstone fragments and feeding them into the sanctified furnace. The flames glowed blue instead of red—something the System had subtly shifted during its upgrades.

Hours passed in focused labor. Sparks flew. Sweat dripped from his brow. By noon, the two polished stone cores sat cooling on a slab of metal, smooth as river stones but humming with embedded resonance.

Now came the harder part—Elemental Dust.

Riven frowned. He remembered seeing strange glowing mushrooms in the western grove. If distilled properly, they might yield nature-type elemental residue.

"Zorua, with me," he called, grabbing a pouch and heading west.

The western grove was darker, the canopy dense, with flickers of eerie light dancing through the underbrush. Zorua stayed close, unusually alert. Her red eyes flicked left and right, picking out movements only she could detect.

Riven found the mushrooms at the base of a twisted tree—a cluster of glowing, bioluminescent caps shaped like spirals.

He plucked three carefully and dropped them into his pouch.

Back at the farm, he ground the caps down using the mortar and mixed in a few drops of sanctified water.

By dusk, the Soilheart Basin had been assembled in the clearing east of the Aura Field. Riven waited until the moon rose, round and gleaming above the horizon.

The moment its light struck the polished stone, the basin shimmered and pulsed. Energy condensed in the air, swirling gently into the shallow bowl.

That night, Riven laid in his hammock beneath the open awning of his cabin, staring up at the stars.

He didn't feel like a guest here anymore. The land no longer felt foreign or indifferent—it was beginning to feel like something that responded to his care, his spirit, his will.

Zorua snored softly at his feet. Riolu meditated by the Resonance Pillar, bathed in aura light.

Riven's mind wandered to the idea of sanctity—of creating a home that was more than just a place to survive. This farm, this land, was starting to become a sanctuary not just for him, but for everything that lived upon it.

Just one more chapter of work, and then… the ring would respond again.

And maybe—just maybe—it was time for another presence to join them.
