Chapter 2 - Pain in the bone

Kael's pov

"We've decided to celebrate Siena's birthday. We plan to have a small party, a little something to make her feel welcome and accepted in our family." Luna Callista, my mother announced.

"But she isn't part of the family." Jaxon pointed out.

"Not yet, she isn't our family yet but by tomorrow she definitely will be." My mother replied with a sly grin.

"It is also an opportunity to show Callen that I appreciate him as my beta and that he is my family and thus by extension, his daughter is also family." Alpha Vaughn, my father, explained.

"How does any of this have to do with us? Where do we come to play?" Jaxon questioned and I could tell he was purposefully trying to aggravate our mother. We all knew Siena was expected to mate with one of us...one of the alpha's triplets.

"You three are, of course, expected to be present. To offer her your support and protection." Luna Callista explained.

"Right, support and protection." Jaxon muttered.

We all knew this had nothing to do with that but none of us dared to speak or call her out.

"This has nothing to do with the fact that she'll find her mate tomorrow then?" Rowan asked quietly, speaking for the first time since we stepped into my father's study.

"It doesn't really matter who her mate is as long as it's one of you. Siena has been brought up in a manner fit for royalty, she would be a wonderful addition to this family and an even more wonderful Luna." Our mother responded with a shrug.

"We all know she's going to be the Luna, there's no doubt about that... everyone in the pack knows it." Alpha Vaughn added.

"And if she isn't any of our mates?" Jaxon asked.

"Jaxon, don't say such a thing." My mother scolded.

"It's a possibility." He shrugged.

"It isn't. She is going to be one of your mates, it's a stamped deal and even the moon goddess wouldn't ruin it." My mother replied with her lips turned downwards.

"There's also something we need to tell you." My father cleared his throat. He and my mother seemed to communicate with their eyes for a few seconds before they turned back to us.

"As you all know the time to pick my heir, the next in line for the alpha position is fast approaching." My father began.

"Just tell us it's Kael already. He is your golden boy and the only responsible one amongst us, it's quite obvious." Jaxon rolled his eyes.

"Jaxon." I scowled at him.

"What? I'm just saying the truth and everyone in this room knows it." Jaxon rose his hands up in surrender.

"You could have been the responsible one if you weren't too busy following anything in skirts." My mother gritted out and the whole room fell silent. We were all aware of the reputation Jaxon had gained but we preferred to ignore it.

"That was because you were always too focused on your golden child." He retorted.

"That's enough, both of you." Alpha Vaughn interrupted their little squabble.

"Regardless of who Siena's mate is, you are all expected to choose mates soon to continue the Alpha bloodline." Luna Callista explained. I knew it was our duty to get mates, if not to boost our strengths then for the good of our pack.

"I am yet to choose who will be my heir but I can tell you this. Whoever ends up being Siena's mate has an edge over the others." My father informed us.

"So what, it's a competition now?" Jaxon quirked his brows.

"It doesn't matter Jaxon, can you drop it already?" I growled.

"Is that all? I don't have time to watch you all squabble about something that is out of your hands." Rowan's voice broke through the tension.

"You aren't considering the possibility that Siena could be your mate?" Our mother asked him.

"I don't care. If the moon goddess makes her my mate then I'll handle it. If not, then I'll wish her a happy birthday and be on my way." Rowan shrugged. This was the most he had said at once and we were all suprised. He pushed off the wall he was leaning on and made to walk out of the room.

"Don't forget to be early." My mother called out to him but he didn't acknowledge her.

"I think I should take my leave as well, I have an appointment to meet up with." Jaxon announced as he rose from his seat as well.

"An appointment or a booty call Jaxon?" My mother quirked an unimpressed brow at him.

"Do you really want to know mum?" Jaxon flashed her a grin.

"Good luck Kael. We are all counting on you tomorrow." Jaxon slapped my back before he left the room.

"I'll make the necessary arrangements for the party tomorrow and if there's anything else you need, you just need to inform me." I told them as I rose from my chair.

"What would we do without you Kael?" My mother looked at me with affection.

It was no secret that I was her favourite because I tried to ease their stress and help out in anyway I can. I knew my responsibilities and I took them quite seriously, much to Jaxon's annoyance.

"You'll make a wonderful alpha for the pack one day." My father announced and I offered him a small smile before I turned to leave the room.

"And Kael?" My mother called out to me, stopping me in my tracks.

"I hope Siena ends up being your mate. You both would make a good team." She winked at me and without another word I left the office, feeling the silent weight of their expectations on my shoulders.

If Siena ended up being my mate, then maybe...just maybe the moon goddess knew what she was doing and had a plan in store for us.
