Chapter 17 - Chapter 16: A Dangerous Game

Jacob walked down the dark corridors of the prison, his footfall echoing off the stone walls. Even though the way ahead was only faintly illuminated by the flickering torchlight, he was certain of his destination. The stench of damp dirt and rotting metal filled his nose as he made his way to Gwen's cell.

As he arrived, the guards outside tensed up. They nodded to him and moved aside to give him space. He pushed the massive iron door open and entered.

Even though her once-pristine robe was frayed, Gwen maintained her regal status while sitting on a creaky bench. She looked up with a little smirk on her face. "To what do I owe the pleasure, my dear husband?" She spoke in a derisive manner.

Jacob's jaw tensed, determined not to fall for her trick. "Gwen, you're still planning while you're behind bars.I require names.

Who is still employed by you?

Her eyes danced with amusement as she cocked her head. "And what makes you think I'll tell you?"

With a low growl in his voice, Jacob moved closer. "Because if you don't, when they realize you have no more authority, whatever loyalty they may have will disappear. If you can help me now, I might be able to guarantee you a more comfortable future."

Gwen's smile wavered just a bit. Then she gave a little laugh. "Oh, Jacob. You underestimate me. Her eyes met his as she leaned forward. "You think you've won, but the real game is only beginning."

Jacob's eyes narrowed. "Who are you working with?"

Gwen let out a sharp sigh. "You think I'll turn on my allies that quickly? You hurt me. Absently, she ran a finger along the bench."But… perhaps I might be willing to share, for the right price."

Jacob's arms were folded. "I'm not here to bargain."

She groaned and shook her head. "Then I suppose we have nothing more to discuss." She leaned back against the stone wall and her smirk returned. "Good luck to you, my love. You'll need it.

Jacob stared at her for a long moment, then turned on his heel and walked out of the jail. The door clanged behind him, and he heard Gwen's laughter as he went down the hall.

Awaiting outside the dungeon was Samuel. "Well?"

Jacob had a solemn expression. "She never stops playing games. But she's terrified. We must move quickly.

Samuel gave a nod. "Then we'd better find that traitor before it's too late."

Meanwhile, everything they did was viewed by invisible eyes from deep within the citadel. They were already setting the trap.
