Chapter 13 - Chapter 12 : The Heart of Darkness

The air within the ruins was dense, filled with an almost tangible weight that pressed down on Hikaru's chest. Each step they took further into the heart of the ancient stronghold seemed to bring them closer to something far darker than the wraith they had just destroyed. The eerie silence was broken only by the echoes of their footsteps and the occasional soft scrape of stone against metal.

"We need to be cautious," Kora murmured, her voice low and careful. "This place... it doesn't feel right."

Hikaru nodded, his eyes scanning the surroundings. The walls of the ruin were covered in strange runes, their meanings foreign, almost alien. They pulsed with a faint blue light, casting an eerie glow over the chamber. In the center of the room stood a large, stone pedestal, its surface engraved with even more cryptic symbols. It seemed to beckon them closer, an invitation to uncover its secrets.

"This place feels like it's been abandoned for centuries," Hikaru said, his tone thoughtful.

"Yet something about it tells me it's not just a relic. This ruin is still alive in some way."

Kora narrowed her eyes as she approached the pedestal. "You think it's a trap?"

"Maybe not a trap, but definitely something we need to investigate. We might find answers here."

System Alert: Energy Anomaly Detected

➤ Unknown Energy Signature Identified

➤ Source: Central Pedestal

➤ Warning: Ancient Magic Residue Detected

➤ Warning: High Risk of Magical Overload

Hikaru felt a jolt of tension run through him as the System's warning echoed in his mind. He glanced at Kora, who had also received the notification.

"We need to be ready for anything," Hikaru muttered. "This magic... it's unstable."

Kora nodded. "Let's move quickly. The longer we stay here, the more dangerous it becomes."

As they approached the pedestal, Hikaru reached out and ran his fingers over the smooth surface of the stone. He could feel the faint hum of energy beneath his fingertips, a low, almost imperceptible vibration. The runes on the pedestal shifted under his touch, glowing brighter as if reacting to his presence.

"Stay back," Hikaru ordered, stepping away from the pedestal. "Something's happening."

The ground beneath them began to rumble, the entire room shaking violently. Dust and debris fell from the ceiling as the walls seemed to pulse with an unnatural energy. The runes on the pedestal flared to life, their glow intensifying to blinding levels.

"Get to cover!" Hikaru shouted, pulling Kora away from the pedestal as the stone began to crack open, revealing a dark, swirling vortex of magic beneath.

For a moment, everything was still—suspended in the air as if time itself had stopped. Then, with a violent surge of power, the pedestal shattered, and a massive burst of energy erupted outward, knocking Hikaru and Kora to the ground.

➤ System Malfunction Detected: Severe

Hikaru's vision blurred as he struggled to push himself off the ground. The force of the explosion had left him dazed, but his instincts kicked in. He could feel the magical energy in the air, heavy and chaotic, surging around him like a storm. The room was crumbling, pieces of the ceiling falling around them, and the floor beneath their feet was cracking apart.

"We need to leave!" Kora shouted, her voice strained as she pulled Hikaru to his feet.

But Hikaru couldn't move. He couldn't tear his gaze away from the swirling vortex in the center of the room. There was something alive within it, something powerful that was beginning to take form. Shadows danced within the magic, swirling and coiling like serpents preparing to strike.

"Kora!" Hikaru's voice was urgent. "Get the others—now!"

But Kora was already several paces ahead, racing toward the exit as the chamber began to collapse around them. Hikaru followed her, his heart pounding in his chest. The vortex behind them grew larger, its energy building with an intensity that threatened to consume them.

System Alert: New Entity Emergence Detected

Hikaru's blood ran cold as the System's message flashed in front of him. The Wraith of the Abyss. He had never heard of such an entity, but he could feel its power growing—an immense pressure in the air that seemed to push down on him from all sides.

"We don't have much time," Hikaru muttered, his mind racing as he followed Kora. The crumbling ruins were not going to hold up much longer. He needed to get to the others and escape before they were all consumed by whatever was emerging from the pedestal.

The group of scouts and mages was already waiting outside the ruin's entrance, their faces filled with confusion and fear. They had heard the explosion, felt the tremors in the ground, and were now on high alert.

"What's happening?" one of the scouts asked, his voice shaky.

Hikaru didn't waste any time with explanations. "Get ready. We're leaving—now."

Kora nodded, already issuing commands to the others. "Form up! Everyone, keep your weapons ready. We might not be out of danger yet."

Hikaru's eyes stayed fixed on the ruins, knowing the danger wasn't over. The Wraith of the Abyss was close—too close.

The System's voice rang in his ears, urging him to escape, but Hikaru hesitated. He couldn't shake the feeling that the true battle had only just begun.

"Move!" Hikaru shouted, his voice filled with urgency. The group sprinted down the path, the ground beneath them trembling as the ruins began to collapse in on themselves.

They reached the edge of the ancient site, the last remnants of the pedestal falling behind them in a cloud of dust.

As they ran, Hikaru glanced over his shoulder. The vortex had grown, the dark energy swirling and twisting into something much more dangerous. He could feel its pull—its desire to consume everything in its path.

But they were too far now. They had made it to safety.

For now.
