Chapter 20 - Chapter 23: Into the Abyss

"Destiny may be written in the stars, but we still have the power to choose the path."

---

The air felt heavier the following morning, as if the very atmosphere had absorbed the weight of last night's revelations. Aarika stood before the map again, her eyes tracing the faint lines that led to the Oracle's Temple. Her hand trembled slightly as she pointed to the distant location.

"Are we really doing this?" she whispered to herself.

Damon was the first to break the silence. "We don't have much choice. The Shadows are closing in, and we need the answers only the Oracle can provide. If we want to survive, we have to trust Arjen."

Arjen stood by the door, his eyes scanning the room, but his thoughts appeared distant, as if something weighed heavily on him too. He'd always been the one in control, the one who had kept secrets and manipulated the situation to ensure Aarika's safety. But now, with the truth exposed, he seemed less sure of himself.

Aarika turned to face him, her gaze piercing. "You never told me everything, did you?"

Arjen met her eyes, his expression unreadable. "I didn't want you to be a part of this world. I wanted you to live a life free from the dangers that have plagued our ancestors for centuries."

"That's not your decision to make," Aarika replied, her voice sharp. "You've been hiding things from me all this time, Arjen. I'm not just some pawn in your game."

The tension in the room thickened, but Arjen didn't flinch. He stepped closer to her. "You're right. You're not a pawn. You're the key to everything."

Aarika's heart pounded. Every piece of the puzzle was slowly coming together, but the more she understood, the more confusing it became. "Then why didn't you just tell me from the beginning? Why make me go through this?"

Arjen sighed, rubbing his temples. "Because I feared you wouldn't survive it. The Shadows have their eyes on you now, and they'll stop at nothing to get the artifact. The path ahead is treacherous, and I didn't want you to be a part of it."

But Aarika had heard enough. She wasn't afraid anymore, not of the Shadows, not of the danger that loomed ahead. "I'm in this now, Arjen. You can't protect me from this anymore. I need to understand everything—everything that's been hidden from me."

A long silence passed between them before Arjen finally spoke. "The artifact can only be unlocked by someone who is both of this world and the next. It's tied to your bloodline, Aarika. And the more you learn about it, the more dangerous it becomes."

Damon moved forward, interrupting the tense moment. "Enough with the cryptic answers, Arjen. Tell us where we're going and how we're going to get there."

Arjen's eyes narrowed, and for a moment, Aarika saw the resolve in him that had always been present. He was no longer just the protector—he was the leader now, and they were following him into the unknown.

"Fine," Arjen said, his voice steady. "We need to cross the River of Souls. It's the only way to reach the Oracle's Temple. But there's a catch. The river is a threshold between the realms. It's not just a physical boundary—it's a spiritual one."

Aarika's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean, 'spiritual boundary'?"

"Those who cross the river don't always return the same," Arjen continued, his eyes meeting hers. "It changes you. It alters your very essence. The Shadows want that power, and they're willing to sacrifice anything—anyone—to gain it."

Aarika felt the weight of his words sink in. This wasn't just about surviving anymore. It was about a battle for the very fabric of reality itself.

"So, we're crossing into another realm?" Damon asked, his tone a mixture of disbelief and curiosity.

"Yes," Arjen confirmed. "But we won't be alone. The Oracle will guide us. We must trust in the process and prepare ourselves for what lies beyond the river. The trials won't be easy."

Aarika's mind raced. The reality of the journey ahead felt overwhelming. She had always felt like an outsider, never truly fitting in anywhere. But now, with the truth of her heritage revealed, she understood that she was far more than she had ever imagined.

"I'm ready," Aarika said, her voice strong, though uncertainty lingered in her heart. "Let's do this."

Damon chuckled, though it was clear his nerves were getting the best of him. "You're braver than I thought."

The group made their preparations, gathering their supplies and finalizing their route. There was no turning back now. The journey to the Oracle's Temple was one that would change everything, and Aarika knew that what she discovered there would either save them or destroy them.

As the sun began to set, casting an orange hue across the landscape, they set out toward the River of Souls. It was a journey none of them were fully prepared for, but it was a journey they would have to take.

The path was winding and treacherous, each step taking them deeper into unknown territory. The trees around them seemed to whisper secrets, their branches twisting as though alive. Aarika's pulse quickened with each passing moment. The world around them felt different—more alive, more aware. The air was thick with magic, and she could feel it pulsing beneath her skin.

But as they approached the river's edge, a chill ran down Aarika's spine. The water was dark, its surface smooth and reflective. The shadows of the trees stretched unnaturally long, as if something was watching them from beyond the veil.

"This is it," Arjen said softly, his voice reverberating with a quiet power. "Once we cross, there's no going back."

Aarika swallowed hard, but her resolve held firm. She had come too far to turn back now. With a deep breath, she took the first step toward the river.

The others followed, each of them knowing that this was the point of no return.
