Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Glitch in the System – A

Whisper of the Impossible

The cold, sterile confines of his assigned dorm room offered little solace. The bare stone walls

and single narrow window seemed to amplify his despair. He sat on the edge of his spartan bed,

the silence broken only by his own ragged breaths. He stared at his hands, turning them over

and over, willing, pleading for even the faintest spark of the fire that was supposedly within him.

Nothing. It was as if the Affinity Crystal had declared a truth that was absolute, a fundamental

flaw in his very being.

Doubt gnawed at him. Had he misread the signs in his village? Had the faint warmth he

sometimes felt been nothing more than wishful thinking? The whispers of the other students

echoed in his mind, each word a fresh wound. Waste of space. Might as well go home. F+.

Just as his despair reached its nadir, a voice, clear and utterly alien, resonated directly within his

mind.

[System Initialization Complete. Host Affinity Detected: Fire (F+). Commencing Core

Integration.]

Nat recoiled, his head snapping up. He scrambled off the bed, his heart pounding in his chest.

"Who's there?" he whispered, his voice trembling, his eyes darting frantically around the empty

room. He was alone. Had the humiliation finally driven him mad?

[Greetings, Host. I am the Elemental Evolution System. My purpose is to assist you in unlocking

your full potential.]

A translucent, holographic screen flickered into existence before him, hovering in the air like a

phantom. It displayed a series of intricate menus, glowing icons, and lines of text filled with

unfamiliar terms like 'Status,' 'Skills,' 'Quests,' and 'Shop.' Beneath these headings were

numbers and symbols that made no immediate sense to Nat.

He stared, dumbfounded, his initial fear slowly giving way to utter bewilderment. A system? Like

in the ancient folktales his grandmother used to tell, stories of chosen heroes blessed with

mystical aids? It seemed utterly impossible, a figment of his stressed imagination. He reached

out a tentative hand, and his fingers passed right through the shimmering screen.

[Confirming Host Interface. Neural Link Established.]

The voice echoed again, this time feeling less like an external sound and more like a direct

thought within his own head. A strange sensation, like a gentle hum, resonated through his

body.

"What… what are you?" Nat stammered, his voice barely above a whisper.

[I am the Elemental Evolution System, a multi-dimensional construct designed to optimize your

growth as an elementalist. Think of me as a guide, a tool to help you surpass your limitations.

Your current affinity, while seemingly weak, holds untapped potential. I am here to help you

unlock it.]

Nat's mind reeled. It was insane, utterly unbelievable. Yet, the screen persisted, the voice

remained clear and unwavering within his thoughts. Could this be real? A lifeline thrown to him

in his darkest hour? He cautiously focused on the holographic display, his eyes scanning the

unfamiliar information. It felt like a dream, a bizarre escape from the crushing reality of his F+

affinity. But a tiny spark of hope, fragile yet persistent, began to flicker within him. Maybe, just maybe, this strange… system… could offer him a chance he thought he had lost.
