He never stayed overnight here.
The squeaking and clattering sounds finally faded, and the night became quiet and heavy. As the man stood up, there was a soft rustling sound of fabric brushing together.
Kelsey suddenly acted on impulse and grabbed his wrist, her eyes landing on the scars on his back. "Can you stay tonight?"
Rhett paused in his movements, but didn't turn around. The muscles on his back were basically perfect, and he started buttoning up his expensive shirt.
Kelsey started feeling nervous. Her fingers slowly clenched tighter, making the already wrinkled bedsheet even more messed up. She held her breath, like she was waiting for him to say something.
After a while, she finally heard him say, "Okay."
Kelsey let out a soft sigh of relief, her eyes getting a little misty. The man in front of her turned around. He was tall, good-looking, with those deep eyes that seemed to have galaxies inside them.
This was her husband, Rhett—the only heir of the Clark family, the youngest person ever to top the wealth list, a regular at elite parties, and known around the world as a genius in business.
A man like that... was her husband.
Kelsey suddenly stood up and looked into his eyes carefully. "Can I help you change into your pajamas?"
She reached out and lightly touched his collar. Rhett's eyes turned a little cold. He looked kind of reluctant, but in the end, he let her unbutton his white shirt one by one.
Kelsey quietly let out a breath. Her heart felt weird, like it was both sweet and sad at the same time.
During their marriage, Rhett had definitely been a great husband.
He was super rich, powerful, and always treated her with respect and care, like a proper partner.
Sometimes, she really didn't get why someone like him would pick her in the first place.
But she didn't have time to think about stuff like that. She needed money, badly. And this man was her only hope. Rhett was the only person she could rely on.
So even though they were husband and wife, she still acted careful around him, always trying to please him.
But Rhett treated her well, always giving her the dignity of a real wife, even though she was so plain-looking she could disappear in a crowd.
He gave her the title of Mrs. Clark, which gave her some space to breathe in real life. Except for the fact that he never stayed the night, everything else was good.
Tonight was peaceful. For the first time ever, Rhett actually slept beside her. He was sound asleep.
But Kelsey couldn't fall asleep at all.
She wanted to reach out and touch his face, but the man frowned in his sleep and turned his back to her.
Her hand just hovered there awkwardly, and eventually, she pulled it back and closed her eyes, slowly drifting off to sleep.
The next morning, Kelsey got up early. She wanted to make breakfast for Rhett.
She tied her hair up into a high ponytail, showing off her fair neck. When Rhett woke up and came to the kitchen, this was what he saw.
Kelsey turned around when she heard him and smiled. "You're up already?"
Rhett replied with a soft "Mm-hmm."
"I'll make you breakfast. It'll be ready soon. Can you wait for me in the living room?"
"Mm-hmm."
Kelsey moved quicker in the kitchen.
Later, the two of them sat in the living room, eating breakfast in silence.
Kelsey had always been a great cook, and as Rhett slowly finished his food, a satisfied look finally appeared on his face.
He had really good manners. Every move he made while eating looked super elegant.
After putting down his utensils, he looked at the woman across from him and said, "I have something to tell you."
"What is it?" Kelsey was about to clean up the table but stopped and looked at him.
Rhett's long fingers tapped lightly on the table for a second before he handed her a document...a divorce agreement.
Divorce?
Kelsey couldn't really describe how she felt when she saw the divorce agreement. She sat at the dining table, her hands nervously clutching her dress. "W-why?"
She looked up, making rare eye contact with the man in front of her.
Even during Rhett's softest moments at night, she had never looked at him like this.
He had a pair of cold, deep, beautiful eyes. There was always this distant and detached look in them, like he hadn't changed in a thousand years, and no one could ever get any pity or warmth from him.
Just like the people who worked for him, Kelsey was scared to meet his gaze.
But this was divorce. It wasn't something small. She had to know why he suddenly brought it up. Even if she didn't have the right to say no, she still wanted a reason...
"There's no reason."
His voice was calm and steady. He stood up slowly, his eyes sweeping over her with this quiet pressure. "Sign it after you read it."
Kelsey didn't reach out to take the document. She just lowered her head. Her face had gone completely pale.
The air felt awkwardly silent.
Rhett looked down and touched her nearly bloodless cheek, still not saying anything. He suddenly remembered last night.
He had been too rough. He held her down with all his strength, and even though she was clearly uncomfortable, she didn't make a single sound. Her face just turned pale, and her hands were grabbing the bedsheet so tightly it looked like she might tear it apart.
Even when it hurt, she didn't make a noise.
The window had been open, but the curtains were closed. When the wind blew, the moonlight outside lit up Kelsey's figure. She looked even more fragile than the pale light itself.
Rhett didn't know which one looked weaker—the moonlight or Kelsey.
Thinking about it, his expression softened just a little, and his brows finally relaxed. "I'll give you some time to adjust. Until then, you can keep living here."
Even after Rhett left, Kelsey stayed curled up in her chair.
She looked at the divorce papers in her hands. Her eyes were dry, and they hurt.
At least he was giving her time. For someone like him, not kicking her out right away was already kind... Shouldn't she be grateful?
...Hospital.
Kelsey didn't have much time to feel sad.
Wen Ran was still getting treated. She stood outside the hospital room, looking at the weak boy lying inside. Her body felt tired, sore, and a little scared.
She picked up her phone. After thinking about it for a few seconds, she called Rhett—
Maybe the divorce had given her enough courage to do something bold. He was still her husband, and she wanted him to be there with her... Would he?
The busy tone on the other end of the call gave her the answer.
Kelsey leaned back against the cold wall, her body weak. Just then, a graceful woman walked past her, and a loud, angry female voice followed.
"Rhett, I'm in the hospital right now. If you don't want anything to happen to the baby in my stomach, come see me now."
Kelsey stood up straight, thinking she had heard wrong.
Rhett?
Her mind went totally blank. She couldn't really hear anything anymore except for that name.
Was that... her husband? Rhett?
Only then did Kelsey look up and realize the woman in front of her was Elise, the recently popular celebrity.
As she listened to Elise's spoiled tone over the phone, Kelsey slowly clenched her fists. A sharp bitterness rose up in her heart.
