Chapter 20 - 20

Haven held the finished quilt in his arms and said, "Wife Master, your quilt is ready. Should I lay it out now?"

There was nothing inappropriate in Julie's room.

She was just used to being independent and didn't really like others serving her or entering her private space.

"Give it to me. I'll do it myself. Thank you for your hard work," Julie said as she took the quilt from his hands.

When Julie's hand touched Haven's arm, he trembled a little and his legs felt weak.

Julie didn't notice and just took the quilt to her room and laid it out herself.

For breakfast, they had handmade noodles.

As soon as Julie tasted it, she knew it was cooked by Bailee. Even though the ingredients and seasoning were always the same, the food Bailee made always suited her taste perfectly.

Julie raised her eyebrows in satisfaction. Even though she didn't say anything, her expression showed she was very pleased.

She ate quickly and happily, finishing two bowls before putting down her chopsticks.

Bailee, seeing this, smiled slightly while keeping his head low over his bowl. As long as she liked the food, it was enough.

Haven also noticed.

But he couldn't do anything about it. His cooking skills were not as good as his older brother's.

Even if they used the same ingredients and method, the food he made was just okay, while his brother's cooking was truly delicious.

After breakfast, they continued working hard on making quilts.

After all, who wouldn't want to sleep under a new quilt?

After finishing the quilts, they would also need to make clothes.

Julie said a few words to the three brothers, then carried a basket with a machete inside and headed to the back mountain.

This time, she mainly went to chop trees.

Julie chopped down more than twenty trees before stopping. She stored them all into her space.

She placed the trees not far from the thatched hut. She wasn't worried about anyone stealing them, because the place was so remote that hardly anyone came around.

Besides building houses, no one would randomly chop trees.

Even if someone wanted to steal them, it would be useless.

Also, not everyone had the strength that Julie had.

Normally, it would take two or three people to move one tree.

On her way back, she picked up some firewood and put it in her basket.

By then, the sky was getting darker, so Julie decided to go home.

When she got back, she saw the three brothers massaging each other's shoulders and backs. The scene made her find it a bit funny.

Especially seeing Lorrie leaning back on a chair, holding his waist and kicking his legs. The whole image looked really silly.

It seemed that the three of them were exhausted today.

Haven, who had sharp eyes, was the first to see her come back.

"Wife Master, you're back! Let me carry your basket," he said, reaching for the bamboo basket on her back.

Julie stepped aside to dodge him.

"No need. You guys are tired today. Don't worry about it. I'll take it to the kitchen. Tonight we'll just eat something simple, then you all get some rest early."

When Lorrie saw her, he quickly tried to stand up, but his legs were weak and he almost fell backward.

Luckily, Julie reacted fast and grabbed his arm to steady him, preventing him from falling.

Lorrie's face turned red with embarrassment, and he lowered his head.

So embarrassing. Did she see everything?

Julie saw that he was fine and then walked to the kitchen.

Suddenly, Bailee remembered something and said, "Wife Master, when you were on the mountain, the village chief came by. He said the land deed was submitted, but the government office refused to process it. The village chief hinted that some bribes might be needed. Also, there's no fixed amount. If we don't pay, the land deed won't be valid, and the money you paid for the land won't be refunded."

"That's just bullying! Why didn't he say anything yesterday when so many people were there? Why did he only bring this up today? And when we paid the money, he didn't say a word!" Lorrie said angrily. He was furious at how the village chief was trying to cheat them.

Bribes... who knows how much money they would need. It could be a bottomless pit.

Julie nodded calmly to show she understood.

She walked to the kitchen without any expression, but a cold light flashed in her eyes.

There's a road to heaven, but you don't take it.

As for whether there's a door to hell...

You'll find out tonight when you become a ghost.

The three brothers looked worried but couldn't do anything to help.

They were afraid the Wife Master would be upset, but she looked completely fine.

They didn't know what she was planning or if she had any ideas.

That night, the four of them just had some corn porridge and a small dish of pickles for dinner.

The three brothers were exhausted from the day's work and fell asleep quickly.

After the lights in their room went out and the time it took to burn one incense stick passed, Julie quietly entered their room.

After confirming that the three were breathing evenly and not pretending to sleep, she gently closed the door.

Then she silently left the house and disappeared into the night.
