Chapter 1 - Runaway

When the sun had gone down, and the sky became dark. I should go home, and my work here is done. I hope Elfy did nothing that would get me in trouble, but there's nothing to worry about.

"Regulus, it's time for you to go home." My coworker told me.

I nodded, putting my things away.

The tinkling tone on my smartphone lit up, there was a new message from Spica, she was my internet friend. I accidentally met her one day and somehow she became closer.

Let's see, an invitation to play a game, seriously the name of the game is Regulus? It's really bad, eh that's my name too.

As for the genre VRMMORPG, it's just a game for zero-life people who just want to escape reality, somehow it suits Spica.

But since on my birthday she gave me a pair of VR equipment, maybe I'll try using it. I stopped at a gameshop on the way home, Spica said that this is where she bought the game.

"Welcome!" The shopkeeper said.

I ignored her, quickly bought the game and immediately left there.

"Come again."

Returning home, I found another message from Spica. Enjoy your time, that's what she said.

Probably, if this can relieve my stress then there's no harm. Maybe I'll enjoy the game, but how.

"Welcome back, sis! I was waiting for you!" Elfy greeted me at the door.

I smiled.

"I'm home."

Ever since my father died and my mother fell ill, Elfy started living with me in the city. Fortunately, the place I live in is designed to accommodate two people.

"What is it?" Elfy asked about the thing in a plastic bag that i brought.

"None of your business." I answered shortly. "Did you eat?"

"I did, the neighbor with the white dog let me eat with him!"

"What about your homework?" I ask.

"Already done!"

I stroked his head.

"Then what's keeping you from sleeping?

Elfy went straight to her room, then came back. She seemed to be carrying a letter. From the looks of it, it looked like a letter from the hospital.

"I'll be gone for a while Elfy." I put on my shoes.

"I'm coming with you!" Elfy shouted.

"Fine."

Fortunately, the hospital where they kept my mom was quite close. With just a short walk we had arrived, I went up to the third floor and went to a room, where there was a nurse waiting.

"This is good news, your mother's condition is improving. If it continues like this, she will recover in the near future." The nurse said. "But there's just one small problem."

Without even mentioning it, I already knew what the problem was, it was none other than money. The little piece of paper everyone craves.

"Please give me some time."

The nurse nodded, for some reason her face was a little down, probably not feeling well.

"Lately, the situation of this hospital has become worse, many patients refuse to pay and also the doctors are exhausted, they are also not paid-" I don't know when the nurse started telling stories.

That nurse must have been yelling since when I left that room, geez. What a pain.

If my salary now is fifteen thousand dollars, and a third of it goes to support my mother, that's a lot.

The cause of my mother's illness has also eluded me until now. It's said that the woman who was always ambitious fell ill due to her own ambition.

"Is mom okay?" Elfy asked.

I nodded.

"Well, let's go home."

I don't know why but i always feel like I'm running away from my problems.

Tomorrow is a day off from work, it's the perfect time. Maybe I'll try the game Sirius said, the name is really Regulus. What a coincidence for the fact that's the same as my name.

I couldn't believe her at first but after buying it, it really is Regulus.

After putting on the VR equipment, and making sure Elfy was asleep. I laid myself down on the bed, and started playing.

Strangely, I didn't see anything.

A Welcome's speech came suddenly, saying the name of the game. And immediately without preamble, explained the lore of the game.

"Long ago, in Starrum Valley, there were sixteen gods who lived. The gods were the strongest, followed by the dragons and elder dwarfs. They-"

I wasn't listening, but looking for the story skip button. After that, there was a character creation section.

Enter a character name, I'll probably use my name Regulus. It might conflict with the game name, so I'll add adfa, a pun on alpha regulus, a star.

This is the thing that most people love the most. They can be anything, be different from who they are in the real world.

But I didn't care, making my character the same as in the real world, purple hair, wearing glasses with suit clothes, almost everything was the same. The only thing I changed was my height. I made myself seven centimeters shorter.

After that the pop up screen showed a message, a quiz. "Playstyle best matches your personality, personality test now!" Just like that.

Using the Myers Briggs classification, I completed the quiz, and the result was INTJ, or here called The mastermind. Each personality also gets a special buff, to match the playstyle.

For the INTJ, who uses a Sniper Rifle weapon, with a buff every time you raise 3 Dexterity stats, you will raise 1 Agility stats and every 5 Agility stats will raise 1 Luck and 1 Charisma.

Not everything is just good, for game balancing, the debuff I get is that if I don't put my stats into the DEX section, there is a 66 percent chance of removing 50 percent of the overall DEX, AGI, CHA stats (stands for Dexterity, Agility and charisma.).

For now, it doesn't have much of an impact, although my Sniper Rifle requires a minimum of 15 STR(strengh) to use. I could only channel the initial 15 points into those stats, and the remaining 35 points I used for DEX.

The preparations alone took a long time, so fine, let's explore this place.

The first area of the initial spawn was a forest, this could serve as a tutorial on how to fight for early players, but for a Sniper like me it felt like overkill.

I used my spare gun, when some monsters, in fact they were just goblins jumped out, I shot them, kept walking and did the same thing.

I don't know why but it just felt bland.

"Is this fun?" I asked myself.

Suddenly there was a different goblin, its weapon were more eccentric and of higher quality than the other goblins.

The goblin was in a stance, pointing its red sword at me. In fact, when I shot at the goblin, he was able to deflect it.

"Not bad." I say.

Carried away by the shock, the goblin lunged forward, I managed to dodge it. The goblin's attack hit empty air.

As I approached the goblin embedded in the ground, I lifted it up, staring at it intently. Unconsciously intimidating him.

"You...any last words?" I asked.

The goblin screamed in fear and ran away, somehow, I still gained experience points from the fight.

Suddenly the system screen appeared in front of me, besides showing that I had leveled up, there was something else. My account received a donation from another person of 50,000 Leo Crystals, the pay to win currency in the game.

Another thing is that I found out that my 'intimidation' skill can avoid any battle with a 50 percent chance, but the experience I get is reduced.

I realized the pay to win money came with the message, "scorch the seventh and fifth area, from Symphony."

At that time I still didn't know anything about this game apart from the RPG mechanics, I didn't realize that I was targeted by the largest guild in this game, a guild with a name in line with the game. Regulus.

"For now, maybe I'll enjoy this game." I ignored the message and left immediately.
