Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 – “Unraveling the Past”

The rain fell in heavy sheets as the black SUV sped through the streets, its tires skimming over the slick asphalt. Sophie sat in the back seat, her eyes staring out the window, her thoughts far from the world around her. The events of the night replayed in her mind like a film on constant loop, but the questions — the lingering doubts — gnawed at her.

Aiden sat beside her, his expression unreadable as usual. The quiet hum of the car was the only sound between them, but the tension was thick. Kellen, in the front seat, kept his eyes on the rearview mirror, scanning the road for any sign of a tail. No one spoke. No one needed to.

Sophie had been in countless situations like this before, but this felt different. The woman in the warehouse had known too much — about her, about Aiden, and about Voss. Sophie's fingers clenched into fists as she thought of the cryptic words the woman had thrown at her before the chaos began.

"You're nothing. You'll never win."

Sophie shook her head, trying to clear the sting of those words. She wasn't nothing. She was more than that. She was a force, a survivor — but she needed answers. If she was ever going to take down Voss and the Syndicate, she needed to understand the web of lies that had been spun around her life.

"Aiden," she finally spoke, her voice cutting through the silence. "We need to find out who that woman really is. And what she knows about my father."

Aiden turned his head slightly, his gaze shifting toward her. His jaw was tight, his expression still carefully controlled. "You think she's involved with Voss? That's what you're getting at?"

Sophie nodded, her eyes narrowing. "I think she's more than just a hired gun. She's too connected. And she mentioned my father."

Aiden didn't respond immediately, but she saw the way his jaw clenched in thought. He was processing her words, weighing the possibilities. It wasn't easy to admit, but Sophie knew she couldn't keep going without confronting the past — the secrets that had been hidden from her for so long.

"We'll find out who she is," Aiden finally said, his tone firm. "But I don't want you getting too close to this, Sophie. This isn't just about you anymore. We're dealing with dangerous people."

Sophie bristled at the implication, her gaze sharpening. "I'm not some damsel in distress, Aiden. I've been in this fight since the beginning. If anything, I'm one of the most dangerous people involved."

Aiden's lips quirked slightly, as though he was about to say something, but Kellen interrupted him from the front. "We've got company," he said in a low voice.

Sophie's heart skipped a beat. Without thinking, she shifted in her seat, her hand instinctively reaching for the concealed weapon at her waist. She didn't know who was following them, but she wasn't about to let anyone get the drop on them.

Aiden reached for his phone, tapping the screen quickly. Sophie could see his mind working, plotting their next move. After a moment, he tapped Kellen's shoulder. "Take the next left. We'll shake them there."

Kellen didn't argue. The car veered left, cutting through the night, the engine roaring as they picked up speed. Sophie glanced out the window, scanning the rearview mirror. Her heart thudded in her chest as she saw headlights approaching quickly. Whoever they were, they weren't giving up that easily.

"Someone's persistent," Sophie muttered, her eyes narrowing. She turned back to Aiden. "You have a plan for this?"

Aiden's lips curved into a cold smile. "I always have a plan, Sophie."

As the SUV roared through the streets, Sophie felt the adrenaline pumping through her veins. This was it — this was the kind of life she had been thrust into. The world of power, manipulation, and bloodshed. It was a far cry from the life she had imagined for herself, but now that she was in it, there was no turning back.

Kellen made another sharp turn, and Sophie heard the screech of tires as they slid around the corner. The headlights from the pursuing vehicle were no longer visible, but she knew better than to relax just yet.

"We're not out of the woods yet," Aiden said, his voice steady. "Stay sharp."

Kellen took another few turns, losing their pursuers for now. As they slowed, Sophie let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. She ran a hand through her hair, trying to calm her racing heart.

"So, what now?" she asked, her voice still taut with tension.

Aiden glanced at her. "We find out who's been tailing us. Then we find out what they know about the woman. And about your father."

Sophie nodded, her resolve hardening. This wasn't just a fight for survival anymore. It was about reclaiming everything that had been stolen from her. Her family. Her past. Her future.

The SUV slowed as they pulled into a quiet alleyway, hidden from the prying eyes of the city. Kellen parked the vehicle and turned to face Sophie.

"We need to lay low for a while. Find out who's behind this. But we also need to keep moving forward," Kellen said, his voice low and serious. "The Syndicate won't stop, and neither will Voss. They've already shown us that."

Sophie's eyes flicked to Aiden, who was now leaning back in his seat, his arms folded across his chest. The rain was still pouring outside, but the weight of what was coming next was heavier than any storm.

"Let's get to work," Sophie said firmly. "We have a lot to uncover."
