Cherreads

Chapter 7 - Challenge 1-2

"Freshly baked bread, cheese, omelet, and hot chocolate." He approached the table with a tray and presented the dishes one by one like a chef waiting for praise.

"They look delicious, thank you." I complimented him as usual. I gently tugged at his sleeve, and he sat down next to me.

"Always a pleasure." He seemed to be enjoying himself.

"I'll say it again. Not every 19-year-old seems like you. I didn't meet a guy as thoughtful as you when I was 19." I said, picking up my fork.

"If you went back to being 19, there'd be a 16-year-old boy making this for you." He winked at me and added, "You were my first love, no matter what."

"Oh my God, do you learn this stuff every day at university?" I had to admit, he had a lot of affection for the original Vivienne. What would he do if he found out Vivienne was seeing several men?

I shook my head, thinking that was a very dangerous thought, and it was better to be cautious with my words.

After breakfast, we headed to the library. Actually, the apartment wasn't far from the university—about a ten-minute walk—and we had a shortcut to the library.

Most students going to the library also chose this shortcut, and when I passed three girls on the way, I figured I could gather some information from their conversation. They were so absorbed in their chat that they didn't notice César and me walking behind them.

-----Chatter-----

"..."

"I heard Sophie's body is still at the university," said the tallest girl.

"How is that possible? The body would be rotting. It's been a week," the blonde girl exclaimed.

"I don't know the details, but I heard the university has a cold storage room. If that's the case, maybe they've put her body there," the last girl, wearing glasses, said.

"Why would the university officials do that?" The blonde girl asked, sounding puzzled.

"Maybe no one came to claim her body, or maybe the university hasn't informed her family yet..." The tallest girl said.

"It's impossible that the university hasn't informed her family after all the fuss," the girl with glasses interrupted. "And I'd like to say she didn't seem like the type to commit suicide. Besides, my friend told me Sophie was so happy after their camping trip, they had planned to meet again. If it was a fall, she was so well-liked, what circumstances led her to go alone to the lake at night? Could the university be keeping her body because they need to investigate something?" The girl with glasses analyzed, clearly very engaged in the incident.

"Then why not hand it over to the police? The police came, but didn't take it. It's so strange. Maybe the rumors are just rumors, let's not think too much about it, it's kind of creepy," the blonde girl said, not wanting the conversation to turn too eerie.

-----End of Chatter-----

"You seem interested today in what happened last week," César said, glancing at me for a moment.

"I was busy preparing for the academic exchange, so I didn't pay much attention to the university gossip. I only heard other students talking about it the last couple of days, and I think it's pretty scary. Who agrees to go to the lake alone at night? You know me, I'm just worried." I said, wrapping my arms tightly around his. "If she hadn't lost her footing and fallen into the water herself, wouldn't there be a murderer lurking in our university, and no one would be safe?" I still wanted to test his reaction.

"You're always like this. When you're busy, you forget about me too. Don't worry too much. The university and the police are handling it, we'll wait for the final results." He sighed and ran his other hand through my hair. "If you're still worried, I can come pick you up after class."

He seemed much more composed now than he had in the bedroom this morning. Does this really have nothing to do with him? Is it true that the death of a stranger doesn't deserve so much concern?
