Chapter 2 - Discovery

The minutes ticked by, the only sound the hum of the Space Carrier Truck's engines and the soft beeps of the team's suits. Liam Reed's voice broke the silence, his tone measured.

"Director Zhang, I've accessed the ship's systems. Unfortunately, the footage and logs were deleted. However, I think I can recover them. It'll take some time, though – maybe a few hours, a day tops."

Director Zhang's response was prompt. "Liam, prioritize the recovery. We need to know what happened on that ship. Keep me updated on your progress."

Liam nodded, his fingers flying across his suit's console as he began the recovery process. "Will do, Director. I'll get started right away."

The team's eyes met, a mix of anticipation and concern etched on their faces. They knew that the recovered footage could hold crucial clues about the spaceship's fate, and potentially, the fate of humanity. The silence that followed was heavy with anticipation, each team member lost in their own thoughts about what the footage might reveal.

The Space Station loomed before them, its three towering structures forming a triangular shape, clad in dark, opaque glass that seemed to absorb the light around it. The team entered through the garage door, parking alongside other Space Vehicles, space bikes, and rovers.

As they disembarked, the team's priority was clear: transporting the two survivors and the deceased to the station's medical bay. They carefully extracted the med capsules containing the survivors, securing them for transport. Next, they carefully loaded the black body bags onto a long tray, their movements somber and respectful.

The team's procession moved through the station's corridors, the silence punctuated only by the soft beeps of medical equipment and the hum of machinery. Their destination was the station's morgue and medical bay, where Dr. Sofia Patel and other medical staff would begin the painstaking process of analyzing the evidence and treating the survivors.

The elevator's doors slid open, revealing a spacious interior that easily accommodated the team, the med capsules, and the tray holding the body bags. With a smooth motion, the elevator descended to Level -0, the Class A med bay for unknown cases.

As they stepped out into the corridor, the team was greeted by the sterile glow of LED lighting and the soft hum of medical equipment. The staff here were dressed in functional black and green uniform jumpsuits, their wrists adorned with Class A digit watches that pulsed with a soft blue light.

The team's footsteps echoed through the corridor as they made their way to the med bay, the med capsules and body bags gliding smoothly on their transport systems. The air was thick with the scent of antiseptic, and the atmosphere was heavy with anticipation.

Dr. Sofia Patel led the way, her eyes locked on the med bay doors as they slid open to admit the team. Inside, the bay was a hive of activity, with medical staff moving with precision to prepare for the incoming patients. The team's arrival marked the beginning of a complex and potentially groundbreaking investigation.

The team entered the main med bay room, its spacious and open layout a testament to the station's cutting-edge design. State-of-the-art equipment hummed softly, casting a sterile glow over the area. Director Zhang stood at the center, his space jumpsuit a stark contrast to the medical staff's attire. A black head mask covered his face, and his hands were clasped behind his back.

Flanking him were soldiers in black armor, their Photon Rifles at the ready. The team's eyes flicked to the guards, their presence a clear indication of the situation's gravity. The air was thick with tension, and the team's focus was drawn to the Director's imposing figure.

"Director," Commander Ava Morales acknowledged, her voice firm. "We're here with the survivors and the deceased. What's the situation?"

Director Zhang's voice was low and measured, his words dripping with authority. "We'll get to that soon, Commander. First, let's get the survivors stabilized and the deceased into quarantine. We need to understand what we're dealing with."

The team efficiently directed the med capsules to the designated rooms, securing the two survivors in one area while the deceased were taken to another. The med bay's layout was meticulously organized, with six rooms in total – two on either side and two in the middle – each serving a specific purpose. At the center of the main area stood a med table, equipped with a tray of instruments and machines essential for medical examination.

One of the deceased, a body bag containing the individual with dark green blood, was placed on the med table. Dr. Sofia Patel carefully opened the bag, and the medical staff gently cleaned the blood from the body, revealing the extent of the wounds and the condition of the clothing. The wounds remained graphic, a testament to the violent nature of the injuries.

With the body prepared, Dr. Patel donned her gloves, her eyes narrowing as she began the examination. Her hands moved with precision, collecting samples and analyzing the wounds with a practiced eye. The room fell silent, the only sound the soft beep of machines and the gentle hum of the life support systems. It was now Dr. Patel's moment to unravel the mystery hidden within the body – a mystery that could potentially hold the key to understanding the catastrophic events that unfolded on the spaceship.

Dr. Patel's hands moved with precision as she made the incision, her focus solely on the task at hand. As she opened up the body, the dark green blood oozed out, its unusual color a stark contrast to the normal crimson hue. The organs, too, had taken on a dark green hue, their texture and appearance altered in ways that didn't seem natural.

Dr. Patel's eyes narrowed as she examined the organs, her mind racing with possibilities. She collected tissue samples, her hands moving with a practiced ease, and began to analyze the cellular structure. The findings would likely be crucial in understanding what had happened to the crew, and potentially, what was still happening out there in the vastness of space.

The silence in the room was palpable, the medical team watching Dr. Patel's every move with rapt attention. The air was thick with anticipation, the weight of the unknown hanging precariously in the balance.

Dr. Patel stepped back from the examination table, her eyes meeting Director Zhang's. "Director, I've completed the examination. The body's anatomy appears normal, aside from the unusual dark green coloration of the blood and organs. However, the DNA analysis reveals something extraordinary."

She paused, her expression thoughtful. "The DNA seems to be in a state of constant flux. It's ever-changing, random, and doesn't follow a fixed pattern. It's almost... adaptive. Given time and the right circumstances, it could potentially evolve into something entirely new."

Director Zhang's expression turned grave, his eyes narrowing as he processed the information. "What implications does this have?" he asked, his voice low and measured.

Dr. Patel's response was cautious. "I'm not sure, Director. But if this DNA can adapt and evolve at such a rapid pace, it could have significant implications for our understanding of life itself. And potentially, for our safety."

Director Zhang's eyes lit up with interest as he turned to Dr. Patel. "Dr. Patel, I need you to try and break down this DNA, see if we can replicate it or create something similar. This could be a game-changer for us."

Commander Ava's eyebrow arched in skepticism. "Director, are you looking to gain something from this?"

Dr. Patel's face lit up with excitement. "Oh, Commander, if we can replicate this DNA, we might be able to create a serum or an injection that could give humanity an edge. Imagine being able to adapt to any circumstance, survive in any environment, withstand any disease. It could be the key to humanity's survival beyond Earth."

Her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm, her voice filled with conviction. "This is my life's work, Commander. And this discovery... it's a goldmine. The potential is limitless."

Director Zhang's expression remained focused, his eyes fixed on Dr. Patel. "Let's get to work, Doctor. We need to understand this DNA and what it can do."

Dr. Patel's eyes shone with determination as she replied to the Director. "It might take some time to break down the DNA bit by bit, but I'm more than willing to stay here all night and beyond to make this happen. This is a dream come true for me, and the potential implications are immense. If I can give humanity such an edge, it could change everything."

Commander Ava sighed, her expression practical. "Dr. Patel, don't forget to check on the survivors as well. We need to know what they know, and when they'll be able to tell us."

Maya spoke up, her voice eager. "I'd like to stay and help Dr. Patel with the work. Maybe I can assist in some way."

The Director nodded, his decision made. "Very well. Liam, I need you to head to the other computer lab and try to access the ship's logs and footage. Let's see if we can piece together what happened on that ship and what led to the crew's demise."

Liam nodded, already moving towards the door. "On it, Director."
