Chapter 4 - Prince?

Hearing that he was a general, her brows raised and a teasing smile appeared on her face.

"A general? Tch, are you sure you're not a boy scout? With your appearance, it's hard to imagine that you're a general."

Qin Yan didn't mind her banter and just shook his head casually.

"Appearance is the last thing thought about on the field. Only strength talks here. Although I'm not the strongest out of my subordinates, I'm the only one with decent knowledge about warfare."

"Huh, It seems that you're pretty active when it comes to talking about war." Zhu Feiying teased, "You only seem to be a little older than 20, so we aren't far apart when it comes to age."

"Hmm, what's your age?" Qin Yan asked, seeing that she was a little young looking, but looked like she was past the age for marriage.

"I am 19." Zhu Feiying said.

Qin Yan nodded his head and took out some tea from his desk.

"Presumingly you should be married by now, right? Wouldn't your husband find out you're missing?" He asked, a little worried that their meeting at night might cause some troubles for her.

Zhu Feiying gave him a strange look, and replied in a mocking tone, "It seems that people in your world still treat women here as an accessory. In my world, women don't typically get married until they're in their mid 20's. As for me? I'd rather focus on my magic than fall in love."

Qin Yan felt a little embarrassed by her words. Although truthful, her words didn't change his thoughts at all.

"You keep mentioning mag-" Qin Yan spoke, but was cut off by a soldier storming in.

"General, there's a problem!" Tang Chen said, breathing heavily.

"Speak." Qin Yan frowned.

"Sir, an army of three hundred ships has appeared on the south-west border."

Qin Yan stood up from his chair and grabbed his uniform. Zhu Feiying raised a brow and stood up as well.

Tang Chen froze when he saw Zhu Feiying and a bit of astonishment flashed in his eyes before a look of understanding.

"No wonder the general rejected the duke's daughter. He was actually keeping a jade with him all along." He muttered.

Qin Yan gave Tang Chen a look and turned his head to Zhu Feiying and asked, "Are you coming?"

Zhu Feiying nodded her head in excitement. At the academy, she wasn't allowed to go to the front lines to fight demons in the underworld until the third year, now she has the opportunity to fight on the front lines, though not demons, excited her.

"You want to see the power of magic right? Then let's go!" She chuckled, and walked out of the tent.

When she stepped out, she could see soldiers scrambling to get their stuff on and make their way to the south-west border. Her nose wrinkled slightly at the smell of sweat in the air.

"Follow me and don't get lost." Qin Yan said, coming out of the tent with a sword.

Zhu Feiying nodded.

She followed on Qin Yan's right side while Tang Chen followed on his left. It didn't take long until they reached the border of the south-west side.

At the south-west border was on top of a stone hill that looked down at the beach. In the distance you could see many ships in the foggy darkness with a flag that had the symbol of the sea on it. Many soldiers were running around, making the cold night a lot warmer.

It kind of reminded Zhu Feiying of students preparing for the final exam, but the failure was not death.

Qin Yan took Zhu Feiying and Tang Chen into a sphere stone building where four other people stood around a round table with paper scattered around it.

"It seems that General Qin has the time to dabble in romance as we get invaded." One of the five people said.

"If I do remember, women are banned from appearing at war sites." Another one said.

Qin Yan snorted and looked at Zhu Feiying, and back at the five other people.

"I believe that my fellow generals will see that this girl you're talking about isn't just some helpless woman."

Qin Yan said this only because of the fact she could actually appear in front of him because of that 'phone' and the fact she seemed quite knowledgeable. She also seemed quite confident in her magic, so he put a little of his trust in her. If she fails, he will simply not allow her back out in the camps.

"As long as she can help us with our current situation, I don't care." A man said with grey hair, causing the two who were causing trouble to shut up.

"What's the plan General Guang?" Qin Yan said.

"Hmm, The Southern Sea attacked us off guard. The fact that our scouts only got to us now is very strange. We simply cannot allow them to reach the shore before we get all of our troops stationed properly." General Guang said.

"But we have no way to stop them at the moment. To set up the catapults would take seven minutes. At that time the ships would have already arrived." General Wang said.

He was one of the two people who mocked Qin Yan.

"Even then, with our troops scattered, a single frontal push would destroy us." Another general added.

Zhu Feiying raised her brow and a grin appeared on her face.

"Tch, It sounds like you guys lack aerial support."

Hearing her words, two of the generals who mocked Qin Yan glanced at her in disdain while the other two raised a brow at her.

"Aerial support? You mean attack from the sky? How are we going to accomplish that?" General Dong asked, taking Zhu Feiying's words seriously.

"Why bother asking. It's clearly just a girl who knows nothing about war and should be kept back at home." General Wang said.

"Shut up." Qin Yan said, slamming his palm on the table.

General Wang snorted and looked at Qin Yan.

"Don't think because you're a prince you can do what you want here."

'Prince?' Zhu Feiying said to herself in surprise.

'No wonder he has a little noble temperament even though he's a general.'

"Just because you're backed by the Crown prince doesn't mean every person's opinion doesn't exist." Qin Yan calmly replied, "Also, my identity is supposed to be kept secret and now you just leaked it to an outsider. If I'm not mistaken, that would be treason."

General Wang's face darkened and looked at Zhu Feiying and said casually, "Just kill her and everything will be fine."

Now it was Zhu Feiying's time to get angry.

"Hey you bald bastard, do you want to burn to death?" She said, and when the word burn was uttered, a flame suddenly appeared in her hand, causing the temperature in the room to increase dramatically and scorching the stone roof.

Seeing the flame appear in her hands, every general including Qin Yan, eyebrows jumped in horror.

'So this is magic?' Qin Yan thought to himself as he looked at Zhu Feiying's angry face.

"Calm down and don't do anything rash." Qin Yan said, trying to fix the situation at hand.

Zhu Feiying snorted and looked at General Wang and the others.

"Huh? Do you believe me now?" She said with a sneer.

General Guang chuckled at her remark and nodded his head and spoke, "How do you wish to deal with the three hundred ships that are coming?"

"Humph, I can't deal with all three hundred ships but I can promise I can buy you time to get all your troops organized in time to deal with the aftermath."

"Hmm, and how do you plan to buy us time?" General Guang asked with a kind smile.

Zhu Feiying snorted and a proud smile appeared under her veil.

"Phoenix Wings!" She said, and a pair of crimson flaming wings appeared behind her, and she started to flap them, causing her feat to hover off of the ground.

"This-" All the generals stared wide-eyed at Zhu Feiying.

"Witch…" General Wang muttered.

"I'm not a witch! I'm a mage. Witches do curses, I do fire magic!" Zhu Feiying snorted.

"It's truly an eye opener." General Guang commented.

Out of all his years of living, he has long regarded magic and witches as rumours and lies to deceive the common people, but now seeing a real life mage in front of him has made his mind open to endless possibilities.

"As a fifth class warrior, I can say I've never met anyone in my one hundred and fifty years of life who can use magic."

Zhu Feiying raised a brow at General Guang's words.

'One hundred and fifty? Has this world surpassed the traditional life span as a human? But how is that possible without magic?'

"With my fire magic, I can fly up in the air while dodging all their arrows and sink their ships. They'll fall in the water though, but with all that heavy gear in the water will drag them down. Also, After I finish off their front ships, I can heat up the water making it impossible to swim in without them slowly cooking themselves, but I can't do such magic on a large scale."

"How does your magic even work?" Qin Yan asked.

"Well, each mage has a 'ring' and every ring they get a new word can be said. For example, a one ring mage can say one word like 'Fire' or 'Burn' but a second ring mage can say 'Fire Strike' or 'fire pillar' and the more rings you have the more words you can have. That's the very basics of magic though, as you must understand intent, word play, reverse words, different languages, etc."

"Hmm, we don't have much time left. Can Miss Zhu do as she spoke now?" General Guang asked.

Zhu Feiying snorted and dashed out of the open windows and headed towards the ships.
