Dongying Village, Nan family.
Xavi was resting his chin on his hands, feeling bored as he stared out the window of his room, "missing his wife under the moonlight…"
The quiet autumn night was a little chilly. By the end of October, the chirping of crickets from months ago had completely disappeared.
Suddenly!
A bright firework exploded in the star-filled sky, adding warmth to the cold autumn moon.
Xavi only glanced at the shape and color of the firework, and immediately stood up in shock!
He would never forget that firework—he recognized it instantly. It was the same one his wife used when she proposed to him in the tea garden!
But why would that same firework appear near the Nan family house now?
Could Jewel be nearby?
The more he thought about it, the more he believed she was here.
Unable to hold back his excitement, he decided to go out and check. If it wasn't her, he would quietly sneak back.
Xavi quickly threw on a coat, gently opened his door, and slipped outside.
The cool air made him shiver in his thin clothes. When he reached the front gate and was about to open it, he hesitated.
What if it wasn't his wife outside?
What if it was someone dangerous?
Carefully, Xavi leaned close and peered through the crack in the gate.
Then he saw a familiar figure—and his heart burst with joy!
That back… he could never mistake it. It was his wife.
He hurriedly opened the gate and smiled at the graceful woman standing there.
The stars twinkled, the moonlight was gentle, and in the quiet night, only two people who deeply loved each other stood face to face.
Jewel, who had been waiting, heard the gate open and turned around with a smile.
She opened her arms, and the young man happily leaped into her embrace.
"Xavi, I missed you so much…"
Jewel's warm hug made the little one reluctant to leave her arms, and her bold words made Xavi's cheeks turn red.
"I missed you too, Jewel…"
Even though Jewel had been busy lately, and Xavi had still seen her a few times a day, he'd mostly spent his time eating and sleeping.
When they were always together before, Xavi didn't think much of it. But now that they were apart for just one day, he felt empty and miserable.
All day, he'd spaced out countless times, thinking about her.
"Be good, Xavi. I'll take you somewhere nice."
Jewel kissed his forehead and gently brushed back the loose strands of hair near his temple.
"Where are we going?"
"You'll see when we get there."
Jewel quietly closed the gate and led her husband to the carriage.
They traveled under the moonlight, with the wind blowing through Jewel's hair. Finally, they arrived at a field glowing with fireflies. She stopped the carriage.
Xavi got out and saw golden lights scattered across the field. The cool night was as clear as water under the bright moon.
Jewel noticed his hands were cold and immediately took off her warm outer coat to wrap him in it.
"Sweetheart, remember to wear more next time."
Before Xavi could respond, Jewel scooped him up in her arms.
He was already used to being carried like this. Sometimes he could even guess when she was about to do it, so he no longer got surprised.
He gently wrapped his arms around her neck and rested his soft cheek on her shoulder.
"Does that mean you'll come again tomorrow?"
Xavi asked honestly, his eyes sparkling under the moonlight.
"Do you want me to come?"
Jewel smiled, carrying him to a large, flat rock before stopping.
The stone was smooth—clearly worn down by people sitting on it over time.
Xavi followed her lead and sat down. Then he thought for a moment and said:
"Actually, maybe don't come tomorrow. There are only two days left before the wedding. I can hold on."
They say "a short separation is better than a new marriage." If they saw each other every day before the wedding, then on their wedding night, she might not feel as excited to see him.
"I'll… try to hold on."
But Jewel wasn't so sure she could.
Going two whole days and nights without seeing him would be torture… What if he was hungry? What if he was cold?
The two of them leaned close in the gentle breeze, feeling warm in each other's presence.
Xavi sometimes pointed at the moon and chatted happily with Jewel.
Other times, he hugged her waist and rubbed against her like a spoiled child—more and more like a little boy.
"Xavi, let me teach you a line from a poem."
Jewel suddenly smiled mysteriously, like a clever fox.
When she saw the admiration and curiosity in his eyes, her smile deepened.
"What's the poem, Jewel?"
Xavi looked at her innocently, like a little white rabbit ready to be tricked.
"'The silver candle's light cools the painted screen, a light gauze fan chases fireflies in the night.'"
The clever fox even gave her little rabbit an explanation:
"It means, under the autumn moonlight, someone holds a small fan and tries to catch fireflies."
The little rabbit understood right away and nodded obediently.
"Oh~ I get it now, Jewel. This poem fits the mood perfectly."
He thought fireflies and the autumn night matched the scene so well. His wife was truly smart and talented.
"Not quite—it needs a little more to really match."
The clever fox turned to face her little rabbit, placed his hands together, leaned in close to his ear, and whispered softly:
"Tonight, you are the firefly, and I am the fan."
With that, she lifted his hands and gently pressed him down on the smooth rock. The little rabbit couldn't resist the fox's strength and lay back quietly.
The fox's eyes sparkled with mischief as she bent down and sniffed the sweet scent of the little rabbit's neck, kissed the spot behind his ear, making him tremble.
Then came his moist eyes, his cute nose, his soft cheeks… and finally, his sweet lips.
