Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: New friendships

The bell for the last period rang and Avery immediately packed her bags like she someone who had finally gained freedom—just as she headed for the door She was stopped "Hey, hold up" She turned to see who it was, and it was the girl who smiled at her in the English class

"Why are you in such a hurry to leave —my name is Stacy and I see you are new, soo.. about what happened in the hallway, you don't have to worry about that, it's Brianna and that's how she is."

Avery gave a slight smile "Oh.. thanks, I go with time I'll get used to things around here."

"Yeah, things can be a little bit intense—especially with girls like Brianna walking around like the own the school, but don't worry you'll fit in just fine." Stacy replied.

Avery managed a small smile "Is she always like that"

"Pretty much" Stacy replied, rolling her eyes. "She got her reputation from being a rich kid that picks on different kids." But that shouldn't bother you.

Avery wanted to ask more questions, saw Stacy as a cool girl —her tone felt genuine. "I'm Avery" she finally said.

"I would like to know more about you—I guess we'll talk tomorrow then

Avery just gave a slight nod as she walked out of the class

As soon as every got home it felt a relief.

"Avery you are back already". Avery's mom said from the kitchen. "How was your first day at school"

Avery froze for a second unsure of what to say, "umm...it went well".

The lie came out easy, but her mom didn't press

Avery's Dad came in. "You look tired". He said as you sat on the couch

"I am Dad —it was a long day". Avery replied.

Avery's mom came out of the kitchen and walked to her. "It's okay sweetie, first days are always like that". She said stroking Avery's hair backwards. Go Fresh up, dinner is almost ready.

Immediately she turned her smile faded, she dragged her legs on the ground like her body was too heavy for her legs to carry. As soon as she got in her room she dropped her bag by the door and collapsed on her bed without bothering to change.

She stared at the ceiling like she was waiting for it to say something to her, her mind was replaying everything that happened in the hallway earlier that day—Brianna's glare, the laughter in the hallway, and Nathan's calm voice, it felt like it was happening all over again.

"Why did that have to happen today? Why me? She said as she pressed her face onto a pillow hoping she would fall asleep and forget all about _even if it was just for a little while.

Suddenly she heard her name echoed from downstairs. "Avery dinner is ready hurry up so it doesn't get cold" her mom said.

"I'm coming Mom". She said as she got up to Fresh up".
