Chapter 2 - Prologue Chapter Two

Still in pain, blinded and deafened, Alex can feel a hand grab his shirt, attempting to pull him up and, after failing to do so, letting go again. A second later, he can feel a cold metal ring press against his head and somebody trying to speak to him from behind. The voice is heavily muffled and partially cut off by the continued ringing in his ears, but he quickly gathers the person's intent.

"Ge- -p! He-, g-t u-, n-w!"

Complying with the person, Alex stands up slowly, his head still heavy and burning with pain, but his eyes start to make out things again. He feels the person behind him shove him toward another room, away from the other figures he saw. He can feel a second person to his right, the heavy and slower steps easily identifiable as his planned father-in-law, both of them being led to the kitchen by the armed person.

After being forced back down to his knees, they wait there for a while, which is enough time for Alex to regain his senses. He tries to look at the person guarding them, but the guy instantly presses his gun back against his head, clearly vigilant to any attempts from him. They continue to wait there for a few minutes until eventually, a loud slap resounds through the building. As the assailant looks up, surprised by the sound, Alex takes the opportunity, his hand reaching up and grabbing the gun in his opponent's hand, shoving a finger behind the trigger. The man tries to shoot, failing to do so, and Alex quickly spins up, punching the man in his sternum, feeling his fingers crack against the man's ribcage, which breaks from the force. The man coughs out blood, trying to call out for help, but Alex follows up with another quick punch to the man's neck, letting him fall over, choking and coughing, the gun now in Alex's hand.

Seeing Alex incapacitate the man, Francis lets out a cough too, then looks up at him. He was seemingly hit harder by the grenade, still unable to stand up, but he points to the door. His words are cut off by his frequent coughing, but Alex is high on adrenaline enough to understand him regardless.

"A-lex, the o-thers, h-el-p th-em..."

With a quick nod, Alex rushes out of the kitchen into the living room, where he spots a few muddy footprints and the grenade shell on the floor, the prints leading him toward the bath. He rushes in with the gun in his hand, spotting an unconscious Victoria lying on her back, a red imprint on her face, with Alice next to her, trying to calm down the now shocked man in combat gear looking up at Alex. He tries to lift his weapon to shoot, but Alex is faster, throwing the gun in his hand at the man, who gets hit in the head, followed by Alex punching him in the stomach. As he topples over, Alex grabs the knife the man has in a holster on his back, stabbing it into his neck and ripping it free to the side. He tries to rush to Alice, but she tearfully shoves him away.

"They got Eli! Help her!"

Hearing Alice's words, he rushes out of the bath again, his chest already burning with exhaustion, as he crashes through the door of the bedroom, where he spots a man holding his gun to Eli's head while attempting to pull down her pants. The man looks up at Alex, equally shocked as his partner before, only to get hit with a thrown knife right in the eye as Alex rushes over to him. The man tries to shoot at Alex, getting off a few shots, one managing to graze his cheek, but with the man impaired by the knife in his eye, he doesn't manage to stop Alex, who grabs the arm holding the gun, breaking it with a sickening crunch, and then punches down on the knife stuck in the man's head, forcing the blade up into his brain. As the man topples over dead, Alex quickly grabs Eli, hugging her to himself, her tears covering his shoulder as she cries. He tries to calm her down, his voice filled with stress, pain, and fear.

"Eli, it's fine, you're safe, calm down, it's okay..."

Before he can succeed in his attempt to calm her, a shot resounds through the room, and half his vision fades, Eli letting out a shocked scream as part of his skull splatters over her. Still filled with adrenaline, Alex turns to look at the man who has just entered the room, his steps resounding in his ear as the man approaches him and Eli, his gun still raised and now smoking.

As Alex feels his vision fade, he reaches out, caressing Eli's face with a soft smile. He cannot hear the words that she and the man exchange, but there is one thing he can do. Using all the energy left in his body, he pushes himself up to his feet, reaching out to where he feels the man. He can feel another shot drill through his chest, his lung filling with blood, as he grabs the man and pulls him along, smashing himself into the window the man's second shot cracked. The two crash through the glass, tumbling down the hill that lies beyond it. As Alex feels the strength in his arms fade, another bullet shooting through his chest, he forces himself up to the man's neck, his teeth biting into the skin and carotid. He can feel himself bleed out, memories shooting through his brain.
