The morning sun bathed the village of Konoha in a warm golden glow, its rays filtering through the trees and casting long shadows across the training grounds. The air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of dew-kissed grass, as Rong Lin stepped into the clearing.
Aside from physical training to enhance his strength, Rong Lin also sought knowledge from books to fill the gaps in his understanding. Many things weren't covered in class, leaving him no choice but to take matters into his own hands.
Fortunately, with the tacit approval of Sensei Bonkon and the Third Hokage, gaining access to the academy's library had been relatively easy for Rong Lin. After signing in, he picked up several books that piqued his interest and began reading intently, completely absorbed in their contents. This drew curious glances from others who entered the library.
Typically, children around five or six years old would dread being asked to read extracurricular materialāit was practically torture. Yet here was Rong Lin, an exception to the norm.
Unbothered by the stares, Rong Lin immersed himself fully in the world of books.
"Gurgle Gurgle~~~"
Time slipped away unnoticed, stretching from noon well into the evening. It wasn't until his stomach growled loudly in protest that Rong Lin realized he hadn't eaten lunch. His empty stomach now demanded attention.
Since the books couldn't be taken out of the library, Rong Lin reluctantly marked the pages he hadn't finished and left with a sense of regret.
After enjoying a hearty meal, he made his way to the training ground.
Whether it was taijutsu, shurikenjutsu, or kunai throwing, all these areas required improvement. Rong Lin displayed a level of determination uncommon for a child his age, quietly persevering in a corner of the training field.
"Two idiots!"
As the bruises on their faces faded, Asuma and Tarin returned to school. Feeling their hateful gazes boring into him, Rong Lin merely smiled faintly and muttered under his breath.
Kakashi's graduation application soon reached the Hokage Tower. However, processing such applications required timeāapproval and official stamps from the Third Hokage himself. Even though it took two months, Kakashi eventually graduated at the tender age of five, becoming the first student of his cohort to do so. Hailed as a prodigy, news of Kakashi's achievement spread throughout Konoha and even reached other hidden villages, drawing significant attention.
Much of this recognition stemmed from his father, Sakumo "White Fang" Hatake, one of Konoha's Shadow-level elites. Unfortunately, history loomed ominously over the horizonāSakumo's tragic suicide was drawing near, and Kakashi would suffer greatly because of it.
While Kakashi earned fame as the new genius of Konoha, few noticed another name quietly rising in prominence: Uchiha Rong Lin. His grades ranked first across all subjects. Had Kakashi not graduated early, their achievements might have invited comparison. But due to Kakashi's brilliance overshadowing everything else, Rong Lin's accomplishments were subconsciously overlooked by most.
Still, some people paid attentionālike the Third Hokage seated within the Hokage Tower.
"997... 998..."
"999..."
Within the training ground, Rong Lin continued his monotonous taijutsu practice, repeatedly punching and kicking with mechanical precision. The reinforced ironwood post groaned under the relentless assault, its surface warped from the strain.
"1000."
Shaking off the sweat dripping from his forehead, Rong Lin casually brushed aside his damp hair. Dropping into a split, he pressed his small hands against his leg muscles, allowing them to relax and recover.
A brief pause later, the next grueling exercise began: one thousand frog jumps.
"Huh, Rong Lin, I didn't expect to find you training here."
An unexpected voice interrupted Rong Lin just as he prepared to continue. Looking up, he saw Maito Guy standing there, his face alight with excitement.
"Hello, Guy. Didn't think I'd run into you here," Rong Lin greeted him with a smile.
"Hehe!!"
Guy flashed his trademark grin, giving a thumbs-up. "Of course! I'm determined to surpass Kakashi! Youth is always filled with fiery passion, isn't it?"
"..."
Rong Lin blinked, then sighed inwardly. So Guy was already spouting this kind of rhetoric at this point?
To be honest, Rong Lin's relationship with Guy wasn't particularly close. At best, they exchanged polite greetings when they crossed paths. Due to certain limitations, Guy couldn't use ninjutsu, and his academic performance was abysmal. If Obito was considered the dead-last, Guy was outright labeled a failure.
However, Guy didn't let any of that bother him. Instead, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to mastering taijutsu, enduring brutal self-inflicted training regimens every day to push his limits further. Though Rong Lin sometimes thought Guy's methods bordered on masochism, he couldn't help but admire the boy's perseverance and relentless pursuit of improvement.
"Rong Lin, let's spar! Only through real combat can we truly improve, right?" Guy exclaimed enthusiastically, oblivious to Rong Lin's exasperated expression.
"Spar?!"
Tilting his head thoughtfully, Rong Lin studied the excited boy before him, noting the thick bandages wrapped around his limbs. After a moment's consideration, he shrugged and replied, "Alright."
"Yay!! Awesome!!"
Overjoyed, Guy pumped his fist triumphantly, jumping high into the air while tears of gratitude streamed down his cheeks.
"..." A flock of crows seemed to fly past Rong Lin's head as he internally lamented agreeing to this. What had he gotten himself into?
This guy's eccentricity was off the charts. Rong Lin feared his IQ might plummet to match Guy's level if he wasn't careful.
"Then here I come!!"
Unable to contain his excitement, Guy charged forward without warning, shouting, "Konoha Senpuu!!!"
Not even bothering to announce his attack, Guy unleashed a spinning kick aimed straight at Rong Lin. Smiling wryly, Rong Lin countered with the same move. "Konoha Senpuu!!!"
The identical technique erupted from two vastly different individuals.
"Ahh!!" A cry of pain echoed as Guy, who had initiated the attack, was sent flying backward. He landed hard on the ground, coughing and sputtering as he stared at Rong Lin in disbelief. "Th-this... How is this possible?!"
"Your technique is sloppy," Rong Lin remarked nonchalantly, shrugging.
"I-impossible! I just wasn't ready earlier! Let's go again!! I won't lose!!" Guy scrambled back to his feet, determination blazing in his eyes.
"Cough cough, ow! Ow!!"
Five seconds later, Guy sat cradling his face, howling in pain.
"Speed, power, reaction time, enduranceāyou lack proficiency in every area, Guy."
Shaking his head, Rong Lin pointed out the numerous flaws in Guy's form. Every part of his technique screamed amateurishness.
