The Mask Unveiled
Dawn's pale light filtered through the shattered courtyard where Kael and Selene had left their last would-be assassins bound in silver-threaded ropes. The courtyard's pristine marble was cracked and stained, guardians' footsteps echoing uncertainly as they approached the unconscious figures. Word of bloodshed had traveled fast. Within minutes, academy enforcers arrived—faces masked by duty, not fear.
Kael stepped forward, hands raised to show he bore no secondary weapons. Selene hovered behind him, aura calm but vigilant. A high-ranking instructor, Captain Morvahn, stalked into the circle of broken stone. His steel plate glinted, eyes narrowed behind a visor.
"Explain yourselves, Umbros twins," Morvahn barked. "Assaulting fellow students, damaging academy property, causing a lockdown—"
"Their hearts beat like hammers," Kael interrupted, voice low. "They were sent to kill us."
Morvahn's visor clicked to life, scanning the bound forms. A display flickered: "Unregistered Masked Agents—Blood Seals Applied." His head tilted. "Not students, indeed. This is grave. But you acted outside protocol."
Selene stepped forward. "Protocol would have let them succeed. We can't wait to be victims."
Morvahn studied her—her poise, the faint violet shimmer around her. He stroked his chin. "Very well. I'll report this up the chain. But until then, you're confined to the Shadow Curriculum training wing. No classes. No privileges."
Kael's crimson eye flickered. "Understood."
As the enforcers hauled away the assailants, Kael and Selene exchanged glances. The academy's walls were tightening around them. And now they knew which masks they had to unmask.
---
By mid-morning, Selene had arranged for Marielle Ravencourt—the Thornweaver Initiate they'd rescued—to join them in the sealed training wing. Marielle hobbled on crutches, her violet hair tied back, eyes bright with gratitude.
"I owe you both my life," she managed, voice trembling. "The corruption… it nearly consumed me."
Kael nodded. "You're safe now. If you want to help, you can analyze the blood seal we found on our attackers."
Marielle winced but knelt beside a small table of slates and arcane tools. As she worked, Selene surveyed the room's high shelves, stocked with rare tomes on blood magic and beast lore. "We need answers," she said quietly. "About Sundered Thrones. About our saboteur's words."
Marielle glanced up. "The seal… it's a fragment of old royal script. Matches nothing in the academy archives, but I've seen similar in the Undercity ruins. Very dangerous."
Kael's form stiffened. "Then we go to the Undercity next. Tonight."
Selene's lips curved in approval. "Exactly where I was headed for research."

Half-way through their clandestine meeting, a soft chime sounded in Kael's vision.

As the display faded, Selene closed her eyes. "We're stronger—but still shadows beneath the academy's gaze."
Marielle looked up from her analysis. "The seal's script speaks of a hidden archive beneath Ebonshade's catacombs. They called it the 'Throne of Whispers.' It's where the Sundered bloodlines kept their darkest truths."
Kael exchanged a glance with Selene. "That's where we're heading."
---
That evening, beneath the pale glow of their auras, the trio slipped through the academy's lower gates. Morvahn's guards formed a loose barrier at the entrance—baffled that the twins were gone. But no one pursued; the darkness swallowed trails.
They rode a silent monorail through abandoned transit tunnels, emerging in the Undercity's labyrinth—moss-clad walls, glowing fungi, and centuries-old ruins. Every step echoed.
Selene's wings tucked tight, and she only used them if they were discovered. Marielle led with her lantern sigil—a gentle purple flame that revealed hidden runes.
Deep beneath a collapsed arch, they found it: an iron-banded door etched with the broken crown and twin wolves.
Kael reached out, fingertips glowing with aura. The door unlocked, grinding open into darkness.
Inside lay a vast hall of obsidian tile, walls lined with petrified vines and floating glyphs. A single dais stood at the center, atop which rested a crystal orb swirling with red and violet mist.
Marielle gasped. "That's the Heart of Whispers."
Selene studied the glyphs. "It contains the memories of the Sundered Thrones… if we can activate it."
Kael knelt before the orb, placing both hands on the crystal. His system pulsed:
> [Quest Update: Activate Heart of Whispers]
Requirement: Bloodline Sacrifice – Twin Synchronization
Warning: Potential Memory Overload
He met Selene's gaze. "Together?"
Selene nodded, stepping forward. She placed her hands atop his. Their auras intertwined—red and violet, black and silver. The orb flared, casting the hall in shifting shadows.
Voices whispered all around—echoes of ancestors, battles, betrayals—the weight of centuries pressed on both twins.
Suddenly, a brutal voice snarled in Kael's mind: "You will never ascend without your father's true consent."
Selene gasped. "Block it!" she sent mentally.
Kael struggled against the mental lash. Selene's aura flared, forming a barrier around his mind. He roared, aura bursting outward, and the orb shattered in a wave of crystal shards.
When the dust settled, only the dais remained.
Kael lay panting; Selene knelt beside him. Marielle stood behind, eyes wide.
No memories poured in. No answers surfaced. Just silence.
Yet, etched on Kael's forearm, in glowing script, were new words:
> "Consent of the Sire Required."
Selene brushed his hair back, worry in her eyes. "The fight for our bloodline is only just beginning."
Kael rose, crimson eye blazing. "Then we'll tear down every wall in this academy—every secret they hide—until we claim our birthright."
Behind them, in the shadows, something stirred. A pair of golden eyes glowed. A faint smile echoed.
"Good. The twins are alive."
---
Next up: Kael and Selene must seek their sire's true consent—an impossible task that will lead them into the heart of Ebonshade's Forbidden District... and straight into the jaws of their greatest adversary.
