Chapter 28 – The Bait Is Set

The dim candlelight cast long shadows across the Duke's private chamber. The thick silence between father and son was heavy, crackling with unspoken tension. Chris sat opposite the Duke, his eyes sharp, calm, and calculating. The revelations from the assassin Liam had disturbed the waters — and now it was time to test how deep the betrayal ran.

Chris leaned forward, fingers steepled."Father, I have a suggestion."

The Duke raised an eyebrow. "I'm listening."

Chris's tone was measured. "We don't know for certain whether my younger brother or the second concubine is involved in this plot. But I believe there's a way to find out… without drawing swords or spilling unnecessary blood."

The Duke remained silent, waiting.

Chris continued, "The capture of the assassin — Liam — is only known to a handful of people. No more than ten, correct?"

"Correct," the Duke confirmed, eyes narrowing with curiosity.

"Then let's use that to our advantage. If I were to appear tomorrow at breakfast with a minor injury and announce that I was nearly assassinated, but that the culprit has been captured and is being interrogated..."

He paused, letting the idea settle.

"Those involved — if any — would panic. The fear of exposure... the fear of death... it will force them to react. They may not confess, but a subtle flinch, a poorly hidden expression, or an anxious response — it will be enough to give us direction."

A glint of approval shone in the Duke's eyes. "A test of fear... clever. When the dead appear to rise, the living tremble."

Chris gave a small nod. "Exactly."

The Duke walked to the window, hands behind his back, looking out into the darkened gardens of the estate."Very well. You'll carry out this plan tomorrow. But we must make it convincing. Use a minor illusion or potion to simulate the injury. I'll play my part — composed, but visibly concerned."

Chris stood as well. "I'll be ready. We'll know who flinches."

There was a pause between them — a quiet understanding.

Then, the Duke turned. His face, usually unreadable, now softened just a touch. "You're no longer the child I once knew, Chris. You're beginning to think like a ruler."

Chris didn't smile. His eyes were steel. "To rule… I must first survive."

With that, the Duke gave a final approving nod, and Chris turned to leave. The candlelight flickered as the chamber door shut behind him.

The trap was set.And tomorrow, the game would begin.
