Chapter 12 - On the Edge of Cultures

After the first meeting, Adnan's mind is constantly on Shizuka. He tells her about Turkish food: menemen, lentil soup, manti… Shizuka is surprised that every meal has a memory. On the next meeting, Adnan tries to make menemen at home. Shizuka tastes sweet red pepper flakes for the first time and is a little startled, but then smiles and says, "Oishii!" This food becomes the first small but solid brick of the cultural bond. In their conversations, not only words but also facial expressions and looks carry meaning.
