"We want twins. One girl, one boy. Both almost completely androgynous, but not so much that we can't tell who's who."
The scientist's pen scratched harshly against the page on their clipboard, rushing to write down all of the couple's requests. They were paying a great deal, so their children had to be perfect. White prismatic hair, eyes like moonstones, pale skin – no, paler than that – a soft personality. Gentle, subservient. Non-confrontational.
When they'd finished rattling off their list, they stared expectantly at the poor rushed girl before them.
"I-is that.. will there be anything else?"
"No, as long as you haven't forgotten anything, that's all."
"Then I'll give you the rundown on the lab's process.."
The couple were pleased to hear that they'd be allowed to watch most of the process – to ensure their twins would come out perfectly, as all designer children should. The only part they weren't allowed to see would be the Personality Adjustment Stage. But that was fine by them, so long as the children were perfect, they would be happy.
'Genevieve' was the name printed on this scientist's tag.
"A little old-Earth, don't you think?"
"This was my grandmother's name. Though of course you already know that. Plus, I don't think Annaliese is any newer."
"You got me there, I must admit. I say, Gen, you do look quite nova in that outfit!"
"Anna, this is not the time for compliments and casual chatter. Though, I do appreciate it."
The two women sat together in yet another white, sterile room. Devoid of entertainment and decoration, they had only each other's company.
"So I hear this next lot will be yours?"
"The twins? Yes. I do quite like the idea of such a stark contrast - my black hair with their white. My husband disagreed at first, but he knows I'm always right!" She sung out, winking at her friend.
"Ah yes, how is Byte going?"
"Oh, wonderful as ever - his health has taken a turn for the better, and I think the twins will do wonders for us. Plus, business is booming - who knew having spas on Venus would be oh so profitable!"
The two talked back and forth about their lives and how they hadn't seen each other in quite some time, filling the empty space with some form of entertainment. At least until Byte got done with the health tests they needed, for the twins.
Anna flopped down on the couch, her long hair flowing down over the arm dramatically.
"Alyssa dearest, would you be so kind as to hang my coat up and bring me some tea?"
A maid with shiny, perfect hair and shiny, perfect clothes appeared around a corner, nodding silently before doing as instructed.
The house the couple resided in was lovely. More than lovely, in fact – it was perfect. It was a mansion of incredible size, with many rooms and many things to do. Of course, this is exactly why they had a M41D (a.k.a Cyber Maid or Robomaid) do the work for them. Not being human means no extra expenses on food or water, or having to wait for it to have a good night's sleep, or worry about overworking it. The M41D's battery life was amazing, and it could go for days without reaching 50%. Of course, this also depended on their job and the size of it. The mansion they resided in was so large that without Alyssa, it would take a whole team of maids to do the work. But that was money. And money is power.
The more you have, the more you were worth.
And this couple were one of the wealthiest on Venus, which happened to be placed third on the Monetary Planet Ranking Board this decade.
