[ Your Character Status Is ready! ]
Alister studied the long holographic text with a calm expression on his face, an expression that gradually morphed into surprise and confusion at certain instances during the process.
By the time he finished reading, the sole expression displayed on his face was one of absolute surprise. His eyes widened and his mouth hung agape as he stared at the staggering sum of money he would be rewarded.
'Five big, fat, fucking million dollars!!'
Alister could not believe it.
Ever since he was born, he had never set his eyes on sums as great as ten thousand dollars before, nor had he ever been fortunate enough to have a thousand dollars to his name.
But now he could and would become the owner of five million dollars — an amount that could purchase a beautiful house, acquire a series of flashy cars, transform the living conditions of the people in the trenches he grew up in, and even attract a beautiful girlfriend if he wished!
Five million dollars was nothing short of life-changing money—enough to make someone like Alister collapse and go mad for minutes!
Alister was so fixed on the money reward — he began daydreaming, imagining all the achievements he could secure with such a sum, and the wonderful part was that this was only his first mission! Just how rich would he become after completing other missions??
King Julian and the Wizard watched Alister, who appeared utterly dumbfounded as he stared blankly into empty midair.
King Julian then turned to look at the Wizard, who returned his gaze, and both were equally curious about what was happening to the hero.
As for Alister, after receiving the briefing of the mission and catching sight of his monetary reward, a surge of motivation and determination ignited in his heart, and he swore to himself that he would complete the mission no matter what it took.
He closed the holographic window without bothering to check his character status, and redirected his attention to the confused King and Wizard, his expression growing even more serious.
"I have heard your plight, you are a good king who cares deeply about the wellbeing of your kingdom. Calm your mind, for I, Alister Ashworth, will conquer the Dark Island and vanquish the evil that dwells within. Rest assured, your son and the people forcefully abducted by the cult will be rescued."
Alister's voice resounded loudly, imbued with a resolute tone of confidence and determination.
A smile graced the faces of both men as Alister spoke.
His words imbued them with renewed hope.
"Great! We knew the sacred summoning spell would never send an unfit hero to carry out this mission."
Alister nodded in agreement to King Julian's words.
After seeing the monetary reward, his zeal increased considerably.
He then turned to the Wizard and inquired.
"Does the spell also allow me to understand what is written?"
"Absolutely, why do you ask, great hero?" the Wizard responded.
"Please address me simply as Alister, or, if necessary for honorific purposes, you may add 'Master' before my name—I am perfectly fine with that."
Being constantly referred to as "hero" or "great hero" was rather annoying to him.
The Wizard nodded in agreement and assured him that it was no issue.
"I require written reports detailing everything that has transpired, including the strength of the cultists and the nature of their attacks. Also, you mentioned that some of your soldiers were killed during your journey, please provide a detailed account of that incident as well."
If Alister were to receive all this information, he would be able to plan with much greater foresight.
King Julian and the Wizard, who later introduced himself as Osborne, did not consider his request difficult at all.
They expressed their gratitude to Alister for his genuine concern regarding their predicament.
After concluding the meeting, they escorted him to a tent situated right beside the royal tent, which had already been prepared for his rest.
Although it was merely a makeshift tent, it was larger than his entire house back on Earth.
A small, glowing crystal orb hung from the ceiling, illuminating a down-filled bed, a chair, and a desk.
"This is way better than I expected from a tent in the middle of a forest in a medieval world," Alister muttered to himself as he ran his hand over the bed, which was soft to the touch. It was even more comforting than the one he had on Earth.
Alister sat down on the bed, and his mind swiftly wandered back to the holographic window.
It still felt as though it were a dream.
He continued to daydream about all that he could achieve with such a life-changing sum.
"Wait, system, can I die in the first mission?"
Alister felt compelled to confirm this. Thus far, the first mission had excluded several aspects, leading him to wonder if death, too, might be exempt. He sincerely hoped it was.
DING
[ YES ]
Unfortunately, the system response dashed his hope.
Alister let out a heavy sigh.
He remained deeply concerned about his well-being in this strange, new world.
Yet he was equally certain that with the right tactics, surviving and completing the mission would indeed be a breath of fresh air.
Before anything else, he knew he must first understand himself.
