Chapter 3 - Chapter Three coming to a head

Atlas pov

My phone rang waking me up from a peaceful sleep. I glanced over at Olivia's bunk hoping it won't wake her up. She was not in bed. I glanced at the caller ID. It was dad. I knew what this was going to be about. The past week I have been getting second in almost all the classes I had with Olivia. She was proving to be a bigger challenge than I anticipated.

" Good Morning dad." I answered the phone.

" I have been hearing that you are getting beaten by a girl."

" I am doing my best." I said

And that is what pissed me off. I was working my ass off and she was barely trying. In the past week she has only been in our room doing homework once. Every other time she has been out before I got in and out before I woke up.

" Son, you have a name to uphold. I will not have a weak link. You won't let this happen again right? I don't want to have to punish you."

He hung up as soon as he was done talking. Sighing, I got ready for the day. Our first class of the day was canceled so I have more time to get ready. I walked into the bathroom to find Oliva standing there wrapped in a towel. She had scars along her shoulders and back. I quickly shut the door and apologized. A few minutes later she came out wearing a long sleeve tee shirt and jeans .

I was about to ask about the scars when she said " forget what you saw and things will keep going smoothly between us."

I was fuming by the time I got to combat class. Like yes it was my fault that I walked in on her but still she had no right to threaten me. She was already a pain in the ass and yet she had the nerves to threaten me . Claiming that things were going smoothly between us. Mr Whitlock interrupted my train of thought as he announced that we would be sparing with each other. We have been working on our basic form. I was paired with Olivia. This was my chance to get my anger out. We stood facing each other. She took no time in attacking. I could barely block her. I waited for an opening and hit her square on the cheek. The look in her eyes changed in an instant. This was no longer a friendly sparring match. I had let my anger fill the punch. The pain and anger in her next punch sent me to the ground. My vision went red, The next thing that I knew Mr Whitlock was in between us. Olivia had scales forming on her face. They looked a little off from a normal scale. I looked down to my hands and realized that mine were also out.

" Dude, what was that back there?" Trey asked " One minute the two of you were just throwing punches then all of a sudden everyone's emotions started to go haywire."

" I am not a hundred percent sure." I answered " I was frustrated and put that emotion in my punch and that changed the whole mood."

" I would keep an eye on her." Noah said " She seems to be getting under your skin a lot lately. I don't want to see you hurt again."

" I know " I replied " I won't let that happen. We can talk about it later."

We walked into the newest class added to the curriculum basic spell casting. The professor stood in front of the classroom. Once everyone was seated he began.

"I am Mr. Henderson today we will be going over how to create a spell and getting you prepared to get your grimoires in the next few weeks. I will also be going over the consequences of using your power without a grimoire."

He drew a circle on the board and proceeded to write the alphabet around it. " It is quite simple to create a simple spell. As long as you can spell you can create it."

He proceeded to connect the letters and wrote the word light and the symbol began to grow. This is also how you create a magical crest but you will learn that in your later years. Now any questions about the creation of symbols."

One student raised their hand and asked " If the spells are that simple, why don't people create more powerful spells?"

"That is a good question. As you found out during the entrance ceremony you were blessed by one of the earth spirits. That is the element that you can draw the most powers from. If you try to use an element that you are not familiar with you can lose control of your power. If you lose control of it it can kill you and people around you. And if you are lucky enough to live then more than likely you will lose your elemental shift."

Olivia raised her hand and asked " What if you can control more than one element?"

" In your case the possibilities are unlimited. Although I do recommend that you use caution when you start out. No one in our day and age has gotten more than two elements so we do not know how powerful your elements are going to be."

The rest of the day he showed us how to draw the elements. I was glad when he told us that once we draw them in our book we will not have to do it again. But if we did it wrong it will be bad.

" Hey did you notice how Olivia flinched when the professor demonstrated the fire element." Trey asked as we headed towards our individual classes.

" I was focusing on drawing my element" Noah said " It is harder than I thought."

" The only thing that I am having trouble with is spacing out my letters to get it all even." I replied.

After our class I met up with Andrew. He told me that he had something that he wanted to tell me. We went to a small coffee shop called Java Jive

" This is the best coffee place in town" He said as he ordered a special.

The barista had him write down his order which was a little weird. I just ordered a simple coffee. While we were sitting at a small table in the back Andrew said " I want you to be careful, There is a group of convicts that have escaped and one of them is stalking around here."

" why should I be worried ?" I asked, " I have no problem with anyone."

" Dad does tho." he replied " One of them is someone that had beef with dad. That is why he got locked away."

The barista came with our coffee. She handed Andrew a piece of paper and said " It will all be ready in a week."

"What was that about?" I asked

" Don't worry about it." He replied " So I heard that there is someone in school that is beating you."

Sighing I said " yeah, from the start she has beaten me in everything. It is like she is not even trying."

" What are you going to do about it?" He asked " you have not faced this problem before."

" I don't know"

We finished our coffee and parted ways. I headed over to Trey's room to meet up with them to think of a plan. His room was full of small shiny objects spread everywhere. Each Raven shift was given their own room, something about too many fights over shiny objects.

" So how was everyone's element class?" Noah asked

" It was good until Olivia out did me on a quiz." I replied

" she is really good at things ain't she." Trey said

I wished that looks could kill because he would have been dead twice with the look that I gave him. The girl was really getting on my nerves. If things keep going this way I was going to have another lesson with dad.

"So what do we do?" I asked, " things can't stay like this for much longer."

" Let's see if we can make her fail the next test and if that does not work then we can see if she is cheating." Noah said

" I can have dad pull a few strings and have one of the teachers give her a special test that there is no way she can pass." Trey said

" What good will that do?" I asked

" If she passes it then we know she is cheating." He replied.

We spent several more hours coming up with plans. I laid down to sleep feeling confident for the first time since I started school.
