Chapter 32 - The Rescue

The night was colder than it had been in days. The trees groaned under the weight of the wind, their branches reaching out like fingers, clawing at the sky. The hunters moved silently through the shadows, their presence barely noticeable in the dark expanse of the forest. They were closing in—this time, they were sure of it.

"This is it," the leader said, his voice low but filled with the certainty of a man who had waited far too long for this moment. "We've tracked them to this point. No more hiding."

His team moved swiftly, their footsteps muffled by the thick underbrush as they advanced on their target. Their quarry was close. They could feel it in their bones—the heat of their prey, the subtle pulse that signaled their proximity.

The baby. Ethan. They were here.

They had been misled once, but this time, the false trail had been abandoned. They knew exactly where to look now.

Elsewhere, hidden deep within the folds of the forest, Ethan and the baby lay in a makeshift shelter, protected by layers of thick leaves and camouflage. The warmth of the fire crackled softly, but it was not enough to mask the ever-present fear in the air. Ethan had barely spoken in the last few hours. The fear that gripped him was suffocating. He couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched, that they weren't safe.

"Don't worry," whispered a soft voice. The baby stirred in the blanket, her small hands moving slightly as though she sensed the danger closing in. "We're going to be alright."

But Ethan knew better. He wasn't sure how much longer they could evade the hunters. He had heard the stories, had seen their power with his own eyes. They were relentless, and they wouldn't stop until they had what they wanted.

Just as the wind picked up and the shadows grew deeper, the sound of footsteps cracked through the silence. But this time, they were not from the direction they expected.

A loud rustling. A shout.

"Move now!" Alex's voice rang out, followed by the hurried thumping of feet on the ground. He had come—he had found them—but it was too late.

The hunters had arrived.

In a split second, the dark figures of the hunters emerged from the trees, surrounding Ethan and the baby in an instant. Their cold, calculating eyes fixed on the pair, and for a brief moment, Ethan felt a rush of helplessness. There was nowhere to run.

But then, just as quickly, the tension broke. The leader of the hunters stepped forward, a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. His eyes locked onto the baby, who, in her sleep, remained unaware of the danger she was in.

"We've been looking for you," the leader said, his voice smooth as silk. "You're coming with us."

Ethan tried to stand, his body trembling with fear and adrenaline. "No!" he shouted, but it was too late. The hunters were too strong, too fast.

A sharp crack echoed through the forest as a hunter reached out and grabbed the baby, lifting her up with ease. The child's soft cry filled the air, but there was no mercy in their eyes.

"She's ours now," the leader said, his tone final.

Alex lunged forward, but the hunters were prepared. He was outnumbered, and with every move, they countered him, keeping him just out of reach. Ethan watched in horror, his chest tightening as the baby was pulled farther away from him.

But there was no way out. Not anymore.

The hunters had won.

With the baby now in their possession, they turned to leave. The night felt colder, darker as they carried away the future of everything they had been searching for. Ethan was left standing in the shadows, trapped between fear and uncertainty, knowing he could do nothing to stop the inevitable.

As they disappeared into the distance, one of the hunters looked back, his voice drifting on the wind. "The game is over. The pieces are in place."

And with that, they vanished into the darkness, leaving nothing but a broken trail behind them.
