Chapter 17 - The Moonborn’s Price

Aurelia stood at the arched window of her chamber, her gaze fixed on the moonlit courtyard below. The stones, bathed in pale silver, shimmered with an eerie stillness. Trees cast long, skeletal shadows, swaying gently in the breeze. The night was calm, almost hauntingly so, as if holding its breath. She pressed her palm to the glass, cold against her skin. For a moment, the quiet almost tricked her into thinking everything was still, everything was safe.

But nothing was safe anymore.

She had spent most of her life under someone else's control, made to believe that her choices didn't matter—that her fate was sealed by the hands of others. Kaelen. Renna. Even the collar that had bound her power. All of it had been a cage, no matter how gilded it might have seemed.

Now, her power was no longer shackled. It stirred within her like a second heartbeat, deep and wild and far from tame. Every day it grew, creeping into the edges of her thoughts, making her feel stronger, yet also… unstable. Less grounded. And in that power's rise, something else had awakened.

The Moonborn.

Her fingers brushed the edge of the hidden crest she had found—a small, silvery emblem carved with the unmistakable mark of the Moonborn. The sight of it sent a chill through her. She didn't fully understand who they were or what they wanted, but they were watching her. She could feel it in the way the night whispered around her, in the weight of dreams she couldn't remember upon waking.

They're coming for me, she thought. But why now? Why me?

Behind her, Kaelen lingered in the doorway. He hadn't said a word, but she could feel him there—his presence heavy, uncertain. He had changed too. Once confident and commanding, now he watched her like a man unsure whether he was looking at someone he loved or someone he feared.

"She's changing," he whispered to himself, though the words were barely audible.

He didn't know how to reach her anymore. Every step forward with her now felt like a negotiation with something volatile. Aurelia wasn't the same person she had been when they first met. That scared him more than he cared to admit.

Before he could speak, Renna entered the room, her cloak still dusted with frost from the night. Her expression was grim, her lips pressed into a thin line.

"They're here," she said without ceremony. "The Moonborn. Or at least, their emissaries. We've confirmed sightings beyond the eastern woods. They've already begun to move."

Kaelen's chest tightened as Renna handed him a letter. He tore it open with shaking hands, his eyes darting over the contents. The news was worse than expected.

"They're moving fast," he said, voice rough. "Aurelia—"

"I know," she cut in, turning to face them both. "You want me to stay inside. Hidden. Locked away while you deal with the threat."

Her tone was cool, unreadable, but her eyes burned. Kaelen stepped forward, but the invisible wall between them stopped him as surely as any magic.

"I'm not doing this with you again," she said. "You don't get to decide what's best for me."

Kaelen swallowed hard. "It's not like that. I'm not trying to control you, Aurelia. I just… I need to keep you safe."

She let out a dry laugh, one with no real humor. "Safe? You think this is about safety? It's always about control with you. With both of you."

Renna looked away, guilt flickering across her features.

"I'm not the same girl you kept behind stone walls," Aurelia continued. "And I'm not going to run from this."

Without waiting for a reply, she turned and left the room, her footsteps echoing against the stone. Kaelen didn't follow. He stood rooted, the letter still crumpled in his hand.

"She's slipping away," he said softly.

"She was never yours to keep," Renna replied. "None of us could hold her forever."

Later that night, Aurelia stood alone in the courtyard, the moon casting silver across her skin like armor. The air was sharp, the silence almost sacred. Power hummed in her blood, responding to the pull of the moon above. She tilted her head back, letting the magic surge through her, unfiltered, untamed.

For the first time, she didn't try to suppress it. She welcomed it.

It didn't scare her anymore.

"This is what freedom feels like," she whispered.

From behind one of the arches, Renna emerged, her brows drawn tight. "They're closer than we thought," she said. "If you're going to choose a side, you need to do it now."

Aurelia didn't flinch. "I've already made my choice."

"And?"

"I won't be used. Not by Kaelen. Not by the Moonborn. Not by anyone."

Renna hesitated, her voice lowering. "They won't take rejection lightly."

"Neither do I."

By dawn, Kaelen had searched every corner of the castle. Aurelia was gone.

He found Renna pacing in the hall, her cloak clutched tightly around her.

"She left," she said before he could ask. "Before sunrise."

His heart sank. He sprinted to the gate, desperation clawing at him. Beyond the stone walls, in the soft gold of morning light, he saw her—standing at the edge of the woods. Alone.

He ran to her, breath ragged, calling out.

"Aurelia! Don't do this. They'll use you. I can't let them take you from me."

She didn't move. The wind tugged at her hair as she stood with her back to him.

"You never had me, Kaelen," she said, finally turning. Her expression was unreadable—neither cruel nor kind. "You only ever had the version of me that needed you."

He stepped closer. "I didn't mean to hurt you. I just wanted to protect you."

Her eyes softened for a second, but only for a second. "And look what that protection cost me. My voice. My freedom."

Before Kaelen could say another word, a shadow detached itself from the edge of the trees. A woman stepped forward—tall, robed in black and silver, her face pale and ageless. The mark of the Moonborn glinted on her wrist.

"We can offer you understanding," the woman said, her voice smooth as silk. "Power. Control. The truth of what you are."

Kaelen's jaw clenched. "And what will you take in return?"

The woman's gaze slid past him to Aurelia. "Only what she is willing to give."

Aurelia said nothing. Her eyes met Kaelen's—eyes that once looked at him with hope, now clouded with uncertainty. The weight of the decision pressed down on her.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to do," she whispered, more to herself than anyone else.

The Moonborn woman took a step forward. "Then ask yourself who you are without them."

Silence fell again. The morning wind stirred the trees, carrying with it the feeling of something inevitable. Aurelia stood on the edge of two worlds—one familiar and flawed, the other mysterious and dangerous.

And in that silence, she realized something chilling.

No matter which path she chose… she would never be the same again.
