--2 Years Later--
--June 10th 2125--
It's been two whole years since I woke up in this strange, futuristic, dystopian version of my old world and honestly.
I still haven't come to terms with the cards fate so kindly decided to throw in my face.
But who would?
I mean, no one in their right mind would enjoy waking up a whole century into the future, inside a body that's a century older.
That's right.
I, Kendra Arata, am now officially 124 years old.
And no, I still haven't figured out how or why.
Sometimes I wonder if I jumped timelines and possessed another version of myself, an older one.
Or maybe I've been living all this time and my memories were just erased.
Hell, maybe the alcohol scrambled my brain so bad that this is all just an elaborate coma dream.
There are too many theories, and not a single one gives me peace of mind. They claw at me when I'm alone. Whisper at the edge of my sanity.
So I do the only thing I can
Ignore it.
If I stop to think too long, I know I'll spiral again and I've had more than enough of those nights.
At first it all felt so surreal, I lived the first day in delirium. Summing it all up as just some weirdly detailed dream, denying all the facts I've learned moments after I woke up.
I started getting to know everyone whilst observing everything I see, taking sight of everything this new world has to offer.
I learned of the name of my attendants, about how this world worked. All of the knowledge this world had to offer, I learnt them all in mere hours.
With the night soon approaching I bid my goodnight towards my attendants, I thought that when I sleep everything will be back to normal.
But as I woke up the next day, I realized that this isn't just any normal dream. For everything still stayed the same, whether it be the people, the world, or my body.
With the first day that passed I started having nightmares, my fears that I've buried ever since I arrived started to crawl out.
At first, it was the fear of dying that haunted me the most.
How long would I even last in this body?
Would I just drop dead one day?
Was my time here already ticking down before I could even figure things out?
Turns out, technology is a hell of a thing now.
Apparently in this future, the human lifespan is no longer shackled by nature alone.
With enough money, which I miraculously have. I can extend my life by about twenty years or so.
Not that impressive, I know. But in my position?
It's a lifeline, a fleeting, fragile one. But nonetheless, twenty years is twenty more than I thought I'd have.
So I'll take what I can get.
"Ahahahaha…"
A short, hollow laugh escapes me as I sit on my couch, a glass of wine in hand, while staring at nothing in particular.
Night after night, day after day, my sanity started to wane, living in a body that is allegedly mine yet without any recollections of it.
I don't even know when I started doing this, talking to myself like some eccentric old coot.
But hey, I am old now, right?
Might as well embrace the stereotype.
At least I'm rich, filthy rich infact.
Yeah. That's the one upside.
Apparently, antique dealing is big business in this future.
REAL BIG.
Turns out, rich people in this world still love showing off, and what better way to flex than by owning a quote on quote "genuine, previous era relic".
I sold a grandfather clock, yes a freaking grandfather clock for nearly half a million dollars inflation included.
No, they didn't need it.
It barely even work.
But they bought it anyway, because nothing screams status like owning a piece of a world that's long gone.
So yeah, I've got money. I've got comfort, I've got twenty more years to spend. And yet that pit in my chest never really goes away.
So I made sure to distract myself when I can.
Thankfully, a lot of the old video games from my time still exist here.
Some even got sequels.
VR single-player experiences mostly, which gets boring after a while, but it's something.
Of course, me being the walking disaster that I am. Had finished all the known available titles already.
Two years of coping mechanisms, completed.
But then, something happened.
Something that made me sit up straight for the first time in months.
Hope.
A faint, distant kind of hope.
But hope, nonetheless.
It started with a customer.
One of my regular rich buyers, the type who brags more than he buys.
He stopped by the shop one day, chatting about the latest "groundbreaking tech."
A new game, he said.
An actual DMMO-RPG.
Fully immersive, with true freedom.
The first of its kind.
I remember rolling my eyes at first.
"Wow, another gimmick," I thought. But then.
He said the name.
"It's called YGGDRASIL."
I froze.
In my disbelief I even asked him to repeat it twice.
And when he said it again, clear as day, I felt my heart stop out of excitement.
YGGDRASIL.
That YGGDRASIL.
The game that existed as the foundation for the world of Overlord.
The very same game that trapped Suzuki Satoru and birthed Ainz Ooal Gown.
I didn't even realize I was gripping the edge of the counter until my knuckles turned white.
Could it be?
Could this really be that world?
A hundred thoughts exploded in my mind all at once.
If this really was the same timeline if Satoru was out there, or would one day be.
Then maybe, just maybe, there's a way for me to escape this aging body.
To start over.
Not just for twenty more years, but for hundreds, thousands, millions even.
A second chance.
No… a third.
Naturally, I went all in.
I scoured the net for everything I could find.
Forums, leaks, company announcements.
I tracked down the developers and spent a stupid amount of money, investing in their company stocks just to get a meeting with someone who mattered.
Because if there's a beta test?
I'm getting in.
No matter what.
Even if I have to throw my entire fortune into the fire to do it.
Because the way I see it, this might be my last shot.
And I'm not letting it slip away.
