Chapter 8 - Securing the meeting

Sweat slicked Alex's palms as she stared at the sleek, chrome Skytech logo on her computer screen. Weeks had passed since her encounter with Ethan at the penthouse viewing. The thrill of getting close had faded, replaced by a gnawing anxiety.

"Alright, Ava Sanders," she muttered to herself, taking a deep breath. "Time to reel him in."

Ava Sanders, the meticulously crafted persona, had become a double-edged sword. It had granted her access to Ethan's world, but the constant deception gnawed at her conscience. Still, she was determined to see this through.

The Sky tech website, a fortress of digital security, felt impenetrable. Layers of authentication protocols and voice recognition software stood between her and even a basic inquiry. But Alex, fueled by sheer determination, spent hours navigating the labyrinthine system. She sipped cold coffee and muttered curses as she encountered each roadblock, but her resolve remained unshaken. With each failed attempt, she analyzed the error messages, reverse-engineering the code to exploit the slightest vulnerability. The dim glow of her screencast an eerie light on her face, illuminating the fierce focus etched on her features as she battled to breach the digital stronghold.

"Welcome, valued client," a robotic voice finally chirped after what felt like an eternity. "How may Sky tech assist you today?"

"Thank you," Alex said, forcing her voice to sound calm and professional. I'm Ava Sanders, a luxury real estate agent. I'm interested in speaking with someone regarding Mr. Ethan Ryder."

A pregnant pause followed. Alex could almost hear the whirring of gears as the system processed her request.

"Ms. Sanders," the voice finally replied, "Mr. Pierce's inquiries are handled through a designated channel. May I redirect you?"

Alex suppressed a sigh of relief. A redirection meant she hadn't been flagged or dismissed outright. "Absolutely," she said. "Please connect me with the appropriate representative."

Another series of prompts and security checks later, Alex found herself connected to a woman whose voice dripped with icy efficiency. Ms. Davis, SkyTech executive assistant, the voice announced.

"Ms. Davis," Alex began, "My name is Ava Sanders, and I represent a highly selective real estate firm specializing in unique, high-security properties. We've recently acquired a portfolio of exclusive listings that we believe might be of interest to Mr. Pierce."

"Mr. Pierce's time is a valuable commodity, Ms. Sanders," Ms. Davis replied curtly. "Please elaborate on the nature of these properties."

Alex launched into a carefully prepared spiel, highlighting properties with features she knew would appeal to Ethan – private islands, remote mountain retreats, and estates boasting top-of-the-line security systems.

"Intriguing," Ms. Davis conceded after a long silence. However, Mr. Pierce rarely grants personal audiences for such matters.

Alex knew this was her moment. Ms. Davis," she said, adopting a tone of quiet confidence, "I understand Mr. Pierce prioritizes discretion. That aligns perfectly with our firm's philosophy. Perhaps a discreet viewing of a select property, one that caters specifically to his requirements, might be more…productive?"

Another pause, longer this time. The tension in the room (or rather, Alex's tiny apartment) crackled.

Very well, Ms. Sanders," Ms. Davis finally said," I will submit your request for consideration. However, I cannot guarantee an audience with Mr. Pierce."

"I understand, Alex said, trying to mask her elation. "But please, convey our sincere interest and the unique nature of these properties. I'm confident they'll pique Mr. Pierce's curiosity.

Days turned into a nerve-wracking week, Alex's anxiety simmering like a pot on low heat. She checked her email incessantly, refreshing the page every few seconds, her eyes scanning the inbox with a mix of hope and dread. Finally, a message arrived from Ms. Davis, short and to the point.

Mr. Pierce has granted a limited window for a property viewing. Details to follow.

Alex let out a whoop of joy so loud that Ben, who had been a silent witness to her anxiety, nearly jumped out of his skin. "It worked!" she exclaimed, brandishing the email. "He's meeting me!"

The joy, however, was quickly overshadowed by a wave of panic. A meeting with Ethan meant getting closer, and with closeness came the ever-present. With a triumphant smile, she bookmarked the listing, her mind already racing towards the next step in her plan of exposure.

Over the next few days, Alex became a whirlwind of activity, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she scoured online listings with a zeal bordering on obsession. She searched for a property that even vaguely resembled the mythical Greek island she had fabricated, her eyes scanning the screens with an intensity that left her eyes dry and tired. Finally, after hours of searching, she settled on a secluded beachfront estate in the Bahamas – luxurious enough to appeal to Ethan's refined tastes, but not as outlandish as a private island. With a triumphant smile, she bookmarked the listing, her mind already racing towards the next step in her plan.

"It's not perfect," she admitted to Ben, showing him the property photos. "But hopefully, it'll at least keep him engaged."

Ben studied the photos, a worried frown creasing his forehead. "Alex, are you sure about this? The deeper you get into this Ava Sanders persona, the harder it'll be to back out."

Alex gnawed on her lip, her eyes fixed on the screen as her mind wrestled with the moral implications of her actions. "I know," she admitted, her voice barely audible, "I'm playing with fire. I'm lying to Ethan, manipulating him...but I can't just turn back now. I've come so far, invested so much." She paused, her gaze drifting away from the screen as she considered the consequences of her actions. "Besides, maybe this meeting will give me some answers. Maybe I can glean something about Ethan, about Sky tech, something that justifies all this deception." Her eyes narrowed, determination burning within her. "I need to see this through. I need to know what's behind that mask of his, what secrets he's hiding." With a resolute nod, she refocused on the screen, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she finalized the details of her meeting with Ethan.
