Chapter 13 - Chapter 13 – A Race Against Time

The sky outside was dark and threatening, with flashes of lightning illuminating the streets as they raced through the city in Dominic's sleek black car. Alicia's heart was pounding in her chest, her thoughts a swirling storm of confusion and fear. She couldn't escape the feeling that her entire life had been a carefully constructed lie. And now, the truth was coming at her faster than she could process.

"Where are we going?" Alicia asked, her voice hoarse. She barely recognized her own words, like they were coming from someone else.

Dominic's eyes flickered to her for a brief second, his grip on the steering wheel tight as he maneuvered the car through the rain-slicked roads. "To a safe house," he said, his voice low and steady, but Alicia could hear the edge of urgency beneath it. "We need to regroup, figure out our next move."

She nodded absentmindedly, but her mind kept returning to one single, unbearable thought: What if it's true? What if she really was the key to some dark, hidden agenda? The idea felt so monstrous, so far from the life she had imagined for herself. But Nathaniel's words haunted her, and she couldn't shake the feeling that everything she thought she knew about herself was about to shatter.

"How did they find out?" she murmured, almost to herself.

Dominic's jaw tightened, his eyes flickering back to the road ahead. "It doesn't matter how they found out. What matters now is that we keep you safe, Alicia."

Alicia closed her eyes, trying to steady her breathing. The storm outside was nothing compared to the chaos brewing inside her mind. She had thought her life was complicated before, but this was on an entirely different level. Who were these people who wanted her bloodline? What did they want from her? And why had her mother kept all of this from her?

As they pulled into a secluded area on the outskirts of the city, Dominic slowed the car and parked in front of a modest, nondescript building. Alicia's eyes darted to the place, trying to gauge whether it was truly safe. But her instincts told her that safety was a fleeting illusion. They couldn't hide forever.

"Stay close to me," Dominic said, his voice firm but laced with concern. "We'll get inside quickly."

Alicia nodded and stepped out of the car, her body tense with anticipation. The air felt heavier now, as if the weight of the night itself was pressing down on her.

Inside the building, the atmosphere was stark and utilitarian. The walls were bare, and the furniture was minimal, almost clinical in its simplicity. There were no windows to speak of, only dim lighting that created an almost oppressive silence.

Dominic moved to a desk in the corner and immediately began going through a set of papers and files, his brow furrowed as he sifted through the documents. Alicia stood there, her mind reeling, her body instinctively drawing closer to him.

"Do you think it's safe here?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Dominic glanced up briefly, his eyes dark with concern but unwavering. "It has to be. But we can't stay long. We need to get you out of the city, far away from anyone who could track us."

Alicia bit her lip, the weight of his words sinking in. The urgency of the situation pressed in on her chest like a vice. "I don't understand any of this, Dominic. Why me? Why my mother?"

"Your mother's involvement in that project was more than just a corporate venture," Dominic said, his voice tight as he pulled out another file and began to flip through it. "She was part of something... bigger. And now, it's come back to haunt you."

"But I don't know anything about this," Alicia insisted, her frustration rising. "I don't even know who to trust anymore."

Dominic turned to face her, his expression softer now, though there was still an unmistakable tension in his gaze. "You can trust me, Alicia. I don't care what they want from you. I care about keeping you safe."

Alicia looked at him, her heart pounding in her chest, unsure of whether to believe him or not. But in the midst of everything, his words were the only thing that seemed constant, the only source of stability in this storm.

Just then, a sharp knock on the door made them both freeze.

"Who is it?" Dominic called out, his tone suddenly cold and guarded.

No answer came. But Alicia could sense the shift in the air, the unease that suddenly gripped the room.

Then, without warning, the door burst open.

A tall figure stepped into the room, their face hidden in shadow. For a moment, Alicia couldn't make out the person's identity, but the heavy footsteps were unmistakable. A sudden, gut-wrenching fear crawled up her spine.

Dominic reacted instantly, his body moving to shield Alicia from view. He didn't have to say a word for Alicia to know that things were about to get even worse.

"Stay behind me," he whispered urgently.

The figure stepped further into the room, and Alicia's breath hitched as the face came into view.

It was Nathaniel.

But there was something different about him. His usual confidence was replaced by an unsettling coldness in his eyes. His demeanor was almost unrecognizable. He wasn't the same brother she remembered.

"Get away from her," Dominic growled, stepping forward, but Nathaniel held up a hand, signaling him to stop.

"I'm not here to hurt her," Nathaniel said, his voice dark and resigned. "But I am here to warn you. You're running out of time. They know you're here. They'll be coming for you soon."

Alicia felt the floor beneath her seem to tilt. "What do you mean, Nathaniel? Who is 'they'?"

Nathaniel hesitated, glancing around the room before his gaze settled on her. "They are not just after your bloodline, Alicia. They are after your future. And if you want any chance of surviving, you need to do exactly what I say."

Dominic's protective stance never wavered, but Alicia could feel the weight of Nathaniel's words. The truth was slowly unraveling before her eyes, but she was no closer to understanding who to trust.

"Tell me what to do," Alicia whispered, her voice shaky but resolute. She couldn't afford to be passive anymore. She needed answers, and she needed them fast.

Nathaniel's eyes flickered with something—hope, perhaps? But whatever it was, it was quickly replaced by the cold reality of the situation.

"We move fast," he said. "And we don't stop until we're out of their reach."
