Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 – Her Name Was Selene

The girl who called herself Selene followed Rael like a shadow.

Not the annoying kind—no questions, no chatter. Just a silent presence one step behind him, like a phantom tethered to his soul. She didn't speak again until they returned to his apartment.

Rael shut the door behind them and turned, finally breaking the silence.

"Talk," he said. "Who are you? What are you?"

Selene stood near the window, staring at the skyline like she didn't belong in this era. "I told you. I am yours."

"That's not an answer."

She looked over her shoulder. "Then let me give you one."

A Memory, Long Buried

In the Tower, time flowed like a dream. Reality bent. Floor by floor, rules changed. Gravity reversed. Space folded. Time bled.

Selene Vireya was born on the 63rd floor—a floor of eternal night. The sky there was a mirror of black water. The ground was made of silver sand that screamed when stepped on. Beasts roamed that fed not on flesh, but on emotion.

Selene wasn't human. Not in the way Rael was. She was a Construct of the Moon Court—a living weapon forged by the Tower itself to protect one of its sacred gates. She was born without a name, without a will. A blade with a beating heart.

Until he came.

Rael Arden, then known only as "The Phantom," reached her floor alone.

He should've died.

But instead, he broke her.

Not with strength.

With kindness.

He looked at her, not as a weapon, but as a person.

She didn't understand it.

But she followed him.

Betraying the Moon Court.

Breaking her fate.

She stood beside him as he shattered floor after floor, rewriting the laws of the Tower.

And in the end—on the 99th floor—she watched him die.

She screamed for him.

And the Tower heard her.

It cursed her with eternity.

Locked her between worlds.

Waiting.

Searching.

Until now.

---

Rael listened in silence, eyes hard, unreadable.

"So you're not human."

Selene nodded. "I never was."

"And yet… here you are."

"I took a body. A vessel. A girl who was dying. She… accepted me. Because she saw your face in a dream."

Rael frowned. "A dream?"

"Souls remember more than minds do," she whispered. "Even the world dreams of you."

He turned away, processing it all. His past life had been a bloodstained climb to revenge and power. He had allies… and betrayers. But someone like her—he had forgotten.

Yet his soul hadn't.

"What do you want, Selene?" he asked quietly.

She didn't hesitate.

"To climb with you again."

Rael's jaw tightened. "This world doesn't have a Tower."

She stepped forward. "But the cracks are forming. I can feel it. The Tower is coming back."

He looked at her as the System messages faded.

Her black eyes reflected something ancient. Something devoted.

She wasn't lying.

And part of him—deep, broken, and buried—was glad she remembered.

---

That night, as the city slept and Hunters scrambled for answers about the phantom who cleared an A-rank gate, Rael sat in the dark, with Selene kneeling beside him like a loyal wolf.

He whispered one word.

"Why me?"

She smiled gently.

"Because you saved me first."
