Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Tides of Change

Mia awoke the morning after Ethan's proposal with a heart full of warmth and a mind swirling with possibilities. The ring on her finger caught the morning light as she turned under the soft sheets, a shimmering symbol of the future they had talked about deep into the night. Their coastal cottage, tucked away from the noise of the world, seemed suspended in time. Everything felt idyllic—waves lapping gently outside the window, the scent of sea air mingling with fresh coffee, and Ethan's peaceful breathing beside her. It was, by all appearances, the start of something beautiful.

They had spent the evening wrapped in each other's laughter and shared dreams. Conversations about wedding locations, career goals, and someday-maybe children had flowed easily, naturally. Mia had felt swept up in it, buoyed by love and the gentle certainty in Ethan's eyes. It had been the kind of night she'd imagined since she was young—a chapter in a story that ended in happily ever after. And yet, as the days slipped by, the certainty she felt began to fray at the edges.

It started with small thoughts, quiet as whispers: Am I ready for this?Have I lived enough of my own life before promising it to someone else? Mia couldn't pinpoint when the doubt had first taken root—perhaps it was during a moment of silence while watching Ethan read on the porch, or when she caught her reflection in the mirror and didn't quite recognize the version of herself looking back.

Ethan noticed. He didn't press, didn't ask questions outright, but Mia could sense his awareness. His normally carefree nature was laced with a deeper attentiveness now, a kind of quiet waiting. He touched her shoulder a little more gently, watched her a little longer when she wasn't looking. It was comforting, in a way, how much he cared. But it also unnerved her. Because if Ethan truly was as steady, as good, as kind as he seemed—what did it say about her that she still hesitated?

Mia loved him. That much she was sure of. But love, she was starting to realize, wasn't always the same as readiness. There were still dreams she hadn't chased, corners of her identity she hadn't fully explored. And beneath it all was a deeper fear—that if she moved forward now, she might one day wake up in a life that wasn't fully hers. That her doubts might grow, festering into regret.

She didn't want to hurt Ethan, not after all they had shared. But she also didn't want to betray herself by ignoring the questions stirring in her soul. And so she found herself at a quiet crossroads, caught between the security of a love she trusted and the uncertainty of a self still in the process of becoming.
