Chapter 136 - Chapter 138 – Depth in Motion

The crowd at UCLA's home court felt the energy before the tipoff. It wasn't just excitement — it was confidence. The Bruins were riding a wave of momentum, and tonight's opponent, while solid, was no match for the chemistry, strategy, and growing depth the team had developed under Coach Reilly and Assistant Coach Ryan Whitmore.

Ryan stood on the sidelines with his arms crossed, watching the players warm up. Ivy stood nearby, clipboard in hand, flashing him a supportive smile.

"Ready for another one?" she asked.

Ryan nodded. "Let's make it clean. Then we'll let the boys who usually wait their turn take the spotlight."

First Half – Establishing Control

From the jump, UCLA controlled the pace.

Jordan opened the game with back-to-back assists, finding Zay on the perimeter and Wes on a cut for a quick 5–0 start. The offense flowed like clockwork. Every screen, every backdoor cut, every rotation on defense — sharp, deliberate.

Coach Reilly clapped from the bench. "Keep the pressure on!"

Ryan watched with a quiet smile, proud. This was the result of the hours of sweat, drills, corrections, and teaching.

At the end of the first quarter, UCLA led by 11.

By halftime, the score was 41–26.

Third Quarter – Coasting Ahead

Jordan dazzled in the third — not with scoring, but with leadership.

He found open teammates, called out defensive assignments, and set the tone. The ball zipped around the court, and the Bruins built a 20-point lead by the end of the quarter.

Coach Reilly turned to Ryan. "Let's do it. Send in the second wave."

Ryan grinned. "You got it."

He stood and whistled to the bench.

"Tony, Darnell, Jake, Marcus, Eli — you're in. Let's go show them what depth looks like."

The bench players high-fived each other and sprinted toward the scorer's table.

Fourth Quarter – Bench Brigade

From the second the backups stepped on the floor, the energy surged. Darnell locked down the opposing guard. Marcus grabbed rebounds like a man on a mission. Tony — always the spark plug — brought the crowd to its feet with a no-look pass to Jake for a fast-break layup.

They weren't just holding the lead — they were expanding it.

Ryan coached from the sidelines with the same intensity he brought to every game. "Talk to each other! Move off the ball! Eyes up!"

They listened. They moved like a unit. Every bench player contributed — not out of desperation, but because they had earned the right to own the court.

With two minutes left and a 25-point cushion, the game was sealed.

But the real victory was watching the players who usually spent most of their time waiting… shine.

After the Game – Earned Applause

Final score: UCLA 81 – Opponent 56.

The starters were the first to greet the bench players off the court.

Jordan grinned and bumped fists with Darnell. "Y'all didn't just play — you dominated."

Ryan walked into the locker room behind them, a proud expression on his face.

He clapped once to get their attention.

"That," he said, looking around, "was a team win. Every one of you showed up. And for the guys who usually sit and watch — tonight you reminded this whole school why we call it a roster. Not a starting five. Not a top three. A team."

The players roared in agreement, towels over their shoulders, sweat dripping, pride radiating from every face.

Ivy leaned against the wall outside, listening to the echo of Ryan's words with a smile tugging at her lips.

The Bruins were on the rise.

And everyone — from the star to the last man on the bench — had a part to play.
