Chapter 39 - chapter - the whispers beneath the dust

Pov:Max

The old haunted block always held rumors—tales of cries echoing at midnight, broken windows that whistled secrets, and lights that flickered without cause. But today, it held something different. Something softer. Something alive.

I walked through the creaky hallway, my footsteps muffled under the dust of old memories. The ghost stories never really scared me. Not compared to the storm that Ram left in my chest ever since that kiss. And now—after everything—I was told to meet him here?

The door on the right side of the master hall creaked open as I pushed it gently. There he was.

Ram.

His eyes met mine instantly, and the world slowed down. He didn't say a word. Not yet. But his eyes spoke—more than a thousand poems could. His lips parted, not in greeting, but in longing.

I stepped forward, breath hitching. The air between us was thin—almost breakable.

Before I could speak, Ram pulled me gently by my wrist. Not roughly. Not like a man driven by lust. But like a boy who was scared to lose the only person he ever dared to dream about.

And then… it happened.

His lips met mine.

No warning. No words.

Just the crackle of emotion that exploded like fire meeting gasoline.

My hands found their way to his chest, but instead of pushing him away, I clutched his shirt. My fingers dug into his back, trailing up toward his shoulders, scratching unintentionally like I was scared he'd disappear.

His arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer—so close I could hear his heart thudding like a war drum. His palm slid over my waist and lightly touched the exposed crease beside my shirt. A spark ran down my spine. I gasped against his mouth, but he didn't push further.

He kissed me like I was fragile. Like I was every page he ever read and never dared to rewrite.

I whimpered softly into the kiss, overwhelmed, not just by the intimacy but by the purity of it. No words were exchanged, but everything was said.

Our foreheads leaned together as we broke apart, both panting. I couldn't look up. My cheeks were burning.

And then we heard it.

A soft cough.

I turned in horror—Vin, Kitty, and Ren were standing near the door, jaws nearly unhinged.

But instead of teasing or gasping—they smiled. Warm, genuine, overjoyed.

"Oh my God," Kitty whispered. "I knew it. I knew it!"

Vin's eyes were wide with excitement. "You guys... you're really…"

Ren stepped forward and simply hugged me. "Finally, Max."

I blinked through tears. "You're not mad?"

Ram stayed beside me, gently holding my hand behind his back. It felt like an anchor.

"Mad?" Ren laughed, wiping her cheek. "We've been waiting for this longer than you two."

Vin added, "We've watched Ram watch you like you held his whole world. This was bound to happen."

I looked at Ram, who had tears glistening in his eyes—but he tried to hide them.

"Why here?" Kitty asked. "Of all the places… this haunted block?"

Ram finally spoke, voice raw. "Because even the scariest places can feel like home… when you're with the right person."

We laughed. We cried. We stood in that broken-down block like it was the most magical place in the world.

And in that moment—I realized.

Love doesn't always scream. Sometimes, it whispers through silent halls and dusty classrooms. Sometimes, it lingers in a touch beside a shirt or in a kiss that tastes like forgiveness and forever.

That day, I kissed my first love again.

And this time—it wasn't a dream.
