Chapter 14 - Rituals

After reading the secret divulged by the monocle, Kev gained a better understanding of the monster he had just dealt with.

Revenants were like smartphones.

The only difference was that once they ran out of battery, they shut down permanently!

Kev had made it run after him for more than a dozen laps, so it ran out of the energy it needed to survive and died of exhaustion.

"Now I know how to deal with mutated Revenants."

The key to defeating a mutated Revenant was to drain it of its energy.

"Maybe dealing with a normal Revenant would be easier."

A Revenant that hadn't undergone the same mutation as the one he fought might not necessarily survive a bullet to the head.

Kev's thought process wasn't wrong.

But only time would tell what was true.

"They can be used as material for the ritual to obtain the role of Corpse Collector in the Dark," Kev thought, his gaze lingering on the two corpses on the floor.

In the Abyss, rituals could be performed to gain classes.

These were special roles that elevated the existence of those who obtained them, bringing about either qualitative or quantitative changes… or both.

Obtaining a class that brought quantitative changes improved the things you already had, adding to your strength, speed, stamina, and so on.

This meant you'd hit harder, run faster, and last longer in a fight.

On the other hand, obtaining a class that brought qualitative changes transformed your very existence.

The abilities you gained depended entirely on the nature and type of your class.

Some let you pierce the veil that separated normality from the extraordinary.

Others granted dominion over the elements.

And then there were those rare classes that let you phase through solid matter, dodge attacks like a ghost, or twist reality itself.

In short, qualitative changes elevated you from the realm of men… into something else.

Something greater.

According to Kev's knowledge, classes were divided into several types and ranks.

The types were Ordinary, Extraordinary, Rare, Unique, and Special. Ordinary classes only brought about quantitative changes.

Special classes brought about both quantitative and qualitative changes.

The ranks were low, mid, high, peak, and transcendental.

The Corpse Collector in the Dark was a low rank special Class. This meant that it didn't just give a slight boost to physical abilities. It also promised amazing qualitative changes!

The method to perform even rituals that granted the weakest type of ordinary rank classes was something Abyss dwellers would gladly kill for.

As for Special class?

The mere rumor of one being unearthed could spark a bloody war!

Abyss dwellers from all corners would descend like a swarm of locusts, slaughtering anyone in their way to claim it for themselves.

Kev had learned about the existence of these rituals not too long ago.

It happened when he interacted with the pedestal and had a torrent of knowledge forcefully shoved into his mind.

The pain from that nearly exploded his mind and killed him.

But when it ended, he smiled.

The reason behind that was simple.

It was the moment he was bestowed with the method to perform rituals that granted classes!

With such profound knowledge in his grasp, he had a clear idea of what he needed to evolve and grow stronger.

In a place like the Abyss, where danger lurked at every corner and the strong preyed on the weak, personal strength was the most crucial variable that determined one's fate.

As long as he could continuously grow stronger, he could ensure his survival. It was also necessary to wander the Abyss in search of his loved ones and protect them!

At the same time, because of surviving the transfer process, he had also gained an understanding of the various languages spoken throughout the Abyss, and much, much more.

It wouldn't be wrong to say his mind had become a treasure trove of forbidden knowledge.

And there was no doubt it was both a blessing and a curse.

"Dakun sent his slave to obtain this fortuitous encounter, but I ended up taking it for myself, gaining a plethora of knowledge and the Monocle of the Dark King. If he ever learns the truth of what happened here, he'd be seriously pissed. I know I would be if something so unfortunate happened to me.

"I need to get out of here fast, or I risk crossing paths with him.

"The iron-clad giant's power was gained through a ritual. This means Dakun knows how to perform rituals that grant classes. He wouldn't treat himself as poorly as he did his slave—he must have used a better ritual for himself. He should be tougher than the iron-clad giant. A battle with him wouldn't be easily won.

"If I'm really unfortunate enough to cross paths with him, I'll have to silence him.

"It's easy to tell that Dakun doesn't realize the monocle's true worth. Otherwise, he would've prepared better. But if he discovers it's with me and manages to escape, there would be no end to the trouble I'd face in the future.

"A poor man with no proper backing, if news spreads that someone like that possesses a treasure in the Abyss, he's done for!"

A sharp glint flashed in his eyes, reflecting his innermost thought.

He had already come to a brutal and murderous decision.

If he crossed paths with Dakun, he had to kill him!

Kev wasn't a man who left his troubles alone.

If they didn't come look for me, he would go to them and strike them down.

"The likelihood of Dakun being a class holder is 100%. In my current state, it will be tough to defeat him. I need to get the Corpse Collector class quickly."

"To perform the ritual that granted the class I am pinning for, I am around two dozen corpses short."

Kev resolved himself to get them quickly.

He hadn't taken off the monocle before looking at the corpses, so all this time the monocle had been divulging secrets to him.

These secrets, he found pretty much useless, so he wasn't planning to trade his memory for them.

The trade between the user and the item could be easily ended simply by taking off the monocle.

Just as he planned to do just that, the hand he had brought up to the monocle to take it off stilled.

In that short moment, a crucial and noteworthy secret had been divulged to him!
