Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Hidden Secrets

Aliana's POV

"I feel like everything I once believed is turning to dust," I confess, leaning against the cold window of my studio as dusk settles over the city. The skyline is a jumble of familiar shapes, yet each one reminds me that nothing is as it seems anymore.

Zayden steps forward from the shadows, his tone smooth and persuasive. "Aliana, you look like you're carrying the weight of the world. Maybe it's time you accepted that your past isn't what you thought it was." His eyes flicker with both concern and something else—an offer of escape, of power, if only I'd join him.

I cross my arms, my voice edged with caution. "Zayden, why are you here? You never leave me alone. I need answers, not more mysteries." My heart races, and I wonder if he's really offering help or just trying to pull me deeper into his web.

He smiles, a half-smirk that doesn't reach his eyes. "Sometimes, the only way to get out of a trap is to work with the one who built it. I can help you—if you're willing to work with me." His suggestion hangs in the air like a challenge, a dangerous invitation that tempts me even as I resist.

Before I can respond, my phone buzzes with an incoming call. It's Michael. I hesitate, then answer, hoping for a word of comfort amid the confusion.

"Aliana, we need to talk," Michael's voice is strained, filled with uncertainty. "Sarah did something... I can barely believe it."

I feel a cold shiver run down my spine as I ask, "What happened, Michael? Tell me everything."

"She—Sarah—she went to the hospital. I received a frantic call from the doctor. She says something about a critical procedure to secure our future. I don't know what to make of it," Michael explains, his voice trembling with disbelief and hurt.

I exchange a wary glance with Zayden, whose gaze sharpens at the mention of Sarah. "I don't trust her, Michael," I say, trying to steady my own voice. "You deserve the truth, and I'm not going to let her lie to you any longer."

Michael sighs heavily. "I just want us to be happy, Aliana. But now, with all these secrets, I'm not sure who to believe." His words echo my own inner turmoil.

Before I can say more, a text message pops up on my phone. It's from an unknown number:

"A private DNA test confirms that Ethan is not Michael's biological son."

My breath catches. Ethan—the child Sarah claims as her own—might not be Michael's? The implications are staggering. I show Michael the message through a video call, and his eyes widen in shock and confusion.

"Aliana, is this true? Could it be...?" he trails off, his voice laden with despair. I shake my head slowly, feeling the pain of betrayal tightening its grip on my heart.

"I don't know yet," I admit, my voice barely a whisper. "But this changes everything. It means Sarah's secrets run even deeper than I thought." I pause, trying to absorb the weight of the revelation. "Michael, you deserve to know the truth about your family, even if it's painful."

Michael's silence speaks volumes. The call ends abruptly, leaving me with more questions than answers. I turn back to Zayden, whose expression is unreadable.

"Zayden, why are you really here?" I demand, my tone firm despite the storm raging within me. "Are you offering me a way out, or are you just here to watch me crumble?"

Zayden steps closer, lowering his voice. "Aliana, I'm not your enemy. I want to help you find a path through this maze of lies. Sometimes, the only way to free yourself is to confront the darkest parts of your past head-on." His words are calm, almost soothing, yet I can sense the ulterior motive behind them.

I glance out the window, trying to gather my thoughts. "I need to know what really happened, Sarah. And I need to know where Michael stands in all this. If Ethan isn't his, then what does that say about everything we've built?" My mind races with images of happier times that now seem impossibly distant.

A tense silence follows, filled only by the distant hum of the city at night. Then, as if on cue, my phone buzzes again. Another message, this one from a reliable source—a friend who once worked for Sarah. The message reads:

"Sarah arranged everything to secure Michael. That child was a pawn in her game. And now, she's making moves to keep him close."

The words hit me like a thunderclap. Sarah's bold move to secure her hold on Michael wasn't just about saving face; it was a calculated effort to keep him under her control. The realization sends a jolt through my system.

"Zayden, Michael, I need to find Sarah. I need to confront her one more time and demand the truth," I say, determination rising in my voice. Michael's hesitance is palpable over the phone, but I can hear him agree, even if it's laced with apprehension.

"Be careful, Aliana," Michael warns. "I know you're hurting, but Sarah is dangerous when cornered." His words, though caring, only add to the urgency of the situation.

I nod, even though he can't see me. "I will. I have to do this. I have to know what's real before it destroys any chance we have of being together." I pause, glancing at Zayden once more. "And Zayden, if you truly want to help me, stay out of my way until I figure this out on my own."

Zayden's eyes narrow slightly, but he says nothing, merely nodding in agreement. I step away from him, heading out into the cool night, my heart heavy with doubt and fear. Every step feels like I'm walking deeper into a labyrinth of lies and hidden truths.

As I approach the sleek entrance of Sarah's downtown penthouse, my mind races with questions and possibilities. The weight of the unknown presses down on me, but I steel myself for the confrontation that awaits.

Inside, the atmosphere is tense, the air charged with unspoken threats and desperate deceptions. I know that soon, I'll face Sarah again, and with the truth finally starting to seep out, everything will be exposed.

And in that heavy silence of anticipation, just as I am about to knock on the door, my phone buzzes one final time with another message that leaves me breathless:

"The DNA test is final. Ethan is not Michael's."

I stand frozen, the door still closed in front of me, my future hanging by a thread of revelations yet to come.
